I've been watching lots of eurorack modules demos and many of them are wonderfully inspiring. However, I really appreciate how so many of Omri's videos are explicitly about ideas and principles without getting bogged down by "how the controls work." When so much of everything is free, the questions aren't "how do I make the most of my limited choices" but "how do I navigate through the many options." Thanks, Omri!

You read my mind. I saw you use one of these modules in one of your earlier videos and planned to see how it works at a later time, but I just couldn't find the video anymore to see how the module was called. Now you even bring a tutorial about it. Really cool, thanks. I save this as a bookmark so that I don't lose it again. :)

So, several threads have just connected for me.
One of my current goals for modular is to start layering & interconnecting more voices that "weave" in and out with each other. NOT random, not just "slap another pile of LFOs onto all the VCAs and hope it's interesting." But musical, satisfying, intentional "conversations" between musical elements.
And I have the beautiful 1U Ritual Electronics "Repression" in my rack, knowing that it's a crucial module for me to reach my next level but struggling to understand it, or even use it.
While watching your video I suddenly thought of a name, an "identity" to help me latch onto what the comparator can do.
It is a "weaver" module. One main reason to use is to "weave" two or more elements with each other. Exactly what I'm looking for.
Hope that makes sense to anyone else, because I think for me the concept just suddenly clicked.
Still need to experiment & practice before I feel comfy deploying it live on a Twitch stream, probably

Oh wow, that's nice! I totally understand what you mean. The 1U comparator is such a lovely module. I have it as well and I use it all the time. Many times I will use it for sound design actually but it's also quite helpful for adding variation and, as you said, weaving sounds.

@@OmriCohen-Music I never would have imagined comparators as a sound design tool if other people didn't point out that capability to me. Luckily, stealing ideas works almost as well as imagining them in the first place. :)
So much to learn - alternating between binge-watching your videos then spending 1-2 hours of intense focus on my rack getting hands-on experience!
Feel like this is the most/fastest progress I've made in modular since the first time I picked up my Mother-32 five years ago!!

@@OmriCohen-Music ok you may not believe this but tonight I finally used a comparator effectively "on the fly" and it was this video and our conversation that I was thinking of!! There was a very slow LFO fading a very slow 4-note sequence in and out with a VCA. I wanted more life on the long-held notes when the VCA was high, since the LFO was so slow the long notes at the peak were very static and boring.
SO!!! I multed out that sloowww LFO to my comparator, patiently spent a few cycles monitoring and adjusting to find the sweet spot. Then used it to open a gate with a very slow ASR envelope that gradually opened a second VCA with a vibrato LFO. (For more fun I also used the same LFO to modify the speed of its own vibrato, getting more intense as it kicked in)
result: a slow and gradual kick-in of vibrato that intensified the longer the note was held and audible, then faded away as the note died. Yes!!!! Perfectly musical and intentional!! The 4-note sequence felt so much more "alive"! Feels so good!

19:11 I've been using Befaco's Atenuverter [sic] for sidechain, no need for an inverted envelope.
In the top section first invert the envelope with a -1x scale, then offset it high with the bottom section, and adjust the scale there too. From there into Mixmaster's V input. Simplest way I've found yet!

    • @OmriCohen-Music
      @OmriCohen-Music  3 роки тому

Well, yeah, you can also invert the envelope yourself but it's kind of comfortable to have it built-in the module itself. Have a look here, there are a few more ideas - ua-cam.com/video/KGNPlhVXPO8/v-deo.html
