The absolute best sounding Harley is a shovel head Bored and stroked. S&S carb, with only headers (not ground pounders) that barely reach past the passenger's foot rest. When it's warmed up setting on the kick stand idling it sounds like it's gonna die between each lope. Total of 80ish cubic inches. It started life as a 77 at FLH Electra Glide Full bagger. That stuff was just about the 1st stuff to go. It can't outrun crotch rockets. But you can keep them in sight for so long they will start to worry something's wrong with their bike.
I had an ‘84 low rider with drag pipes, used to stay overnight at my GF’s house and had to leave early mornings. I was probably the neighborhood alarm clock as I rolled out to a chorus of curses. Loved that bike.
Shovel 1340 will always be my favourite Harley engine, with or without electric start, no electric start just gives you plenty of incentive to keep it tuned nicely so that it always starts on a couple of kicks! 😂

It's altitude compensating and you can improve throttle response by installing a lighter spring and rasing your jet needle. The California Government might shit their pants, but if you polish the slide, this carb will do great in any atmospheric condition or altitude... high or low. **Note: "Polishing your slide" doesn't require a subscription to PornHub** ;-)

My first Harley was a Shovel...and my second...and fourth...fifth...and seventh...the other 5 were Evo's and Twin Cams. But the first one...hardtail and kickstarter. Great times! Always black fingers and no money. Ha ha!

Love the sound and all the style, with the exception of the "ape hangers". A rider has much less control over the bike so voiding an accident is much more difficult. And any kind of distance riding is a pain. Other than that, great bike.
