  • It's been just a little over a year before I finally took the guitar off the stand in the corner and got serious about learning. I've been following the JustinGuitar.com lessons and recording my progress at the end of each month.

    You're killin' it, man. I'm telling you, watching all you guys who have done a year, just blows my mind. I didn't progress nearly as fast as some of you guys... 20 some odd years of playing, I'm a bit better now, but you guys will be passing me in a couple of years. Nice work.

    Just started out on my journey to play guitar at 63. About 1 month in using Justin Guitar so it’s great to see your progress after a year. Thanks.

      That's great Richard. Justin has been the absolutely perfect teacher and I've benefitted hugely by using his online app and tutorials. Wishing you the best on your new journey!

    Thank you for sharing! I’m about 4ish months into JG and it’s great to see what I have to look forward to. It’s been a wild ride. Like you said, weeks go by where I’m like “nothing new is clicking!” And then bam! Grateful to have such a great hobby.

      That's awesome Nina - I remember my first 6 months feeling like some things like the F barre shape and being able to pluck individual strings would never come. Slowly but surely those skills start to bloom!

      Thanks Jacob. Interestingly I find that putting the camera on tightens me up but after I've done it I get the looseness back. I've also started to learn how deep I need to get the song to the point where I don't have to think about it and I can just play. Takes time and practice but so fun when it all comes together.

      @@jessethetodd yes I've been able to just play and watch my fingers go along with want I want without having to tell myself. It's beautiful can't wait for when I'm flying around ☺️

    I just started, it's nice to see someone who has stuck through 1 year of Justin's lessons! Motivating!

      That's great Brian! Just stick with it - it's all about small incremental gains - one little improvement every day adds up to a mountain over time (though can feel like nothing in the moment).

    Congratulations on your progress! Like Richard Ayres below I'm 63 and have just picked up a guitar for the first time. To make it even more challenging (as if doing this wasn't enough!) I'm left-handed, but decided to keep things simple and learn right-handed. Three weeks in and looking forward to eventually getting a clean D chord!

      @jessethetodd  Рік тому +2

      Richard congratulations on your new adventure. My brother is in the same (left handed) boat and took the same approach. Id say it was a good 2 months before I could comfortably move between G, A, D, and C. I followed the lessons at JustinGuitar.com including his free online practice regimen which included alot of practicing making accurate chord shapes and moving from one shape to another. Lots of repitition but once that muscle memory takes over it can feel like magic!

      I have zero doubts! All about consistent practice! I've been both amazed at things I've been able to tackle that at one point seemed completely unattainable, and continuously humbled at how much I still have to learn and improve.

    I'm 2 months in, at the end of module 1... This is an awesome video and it really helps to see a real example of what progress looks like.
    It's hard for me to be ok with where I'm at. I really liked how you said you're ok with not being perfect.
    I'm going to make a video soon so I can compare it with my one year vid when that time comes.
    Thanks for the inspiration and keep it up, you rock!

    • @jessethetodd
      @jessethetodd  Рік тому +2

      Awesome! Stick with it - I feel like especially over the course of my first year learning I found myself hitting many stretches of time where I felt like no progress was happening and then suddenly it would all come together and felt like magic! I allowed myself to slow down and be patient with my progress and that has made a huge difference in lowering my frustration levels.

    Hi. I am a beginner 63 years old and played for 14 month. Practising 5-6 days a week and 45 min per day. I am working hard on barre-chords for 10 weeks now but I am still to slow. I still realy like to practice. I am impressed of your barre-chords and singing. You are ahead of me over all. I like you dont have complete songs. Looking forward for your next video. Thanks from Skelleftea, Sweden

      Thanks Jagge. I finally after a 2 month break from posting videos just added a couple of covers - full (short) songs end-to-end. It's been a big challenge, harder than I thought it would be and the songs aren't professional quality by any means but it's been a really good way to push myself. Check them out on my channel and let me know what you think!

    Hi man have you ever skip a module? Because i don't want to play blues but i also don't want to lose some good tips

    • @jessethetodd
      @jessethetodd  11 місяців тому +1

      Yeah - I mainly worked straight through Grades 1-2 and once I got to Grade 3 I started getting a bit more selective. For me I also didn't love the blues stuff at first but now I've come full circle and am starting to focus more than ever on standard blues progressions and working on pentatonic lead lines and solos.
      What has been the most helpful for me from Justin's courses has been the consistent approach of always working on something technique-wise (whether strumming patterns or picking techniques or now things like string bending), something theory related (chords, scales, riffs using pentatonic), working on something new (a specific song with a goal of publishing a video which for me means I have it locked down), and polishing old songs to keep them fresh.

    How often would you say you practiced, and how long was each session?

    • @jessethetodd
      @jessethetodd  Рік тому +5

      Try to practice 6-7 days a week, at least 30 mins. First 6 months or so that was a challenge but as time has gone by 30 mins flies by very quickly. Using the JustinGuitar.com online lessons and online practice app has really helped give me structure and helped me make sure I'm practicing different techniques and skills. Usually the 30 mins includes 5-10 mins of specific techniques, 10 mins of working on 1-2 different songs I'm currently working on, and 10 mins of songs I "know" but trying to keep fresh and polished.

    Are you using anything other than the Justin Guitar app to learn to play guitar? 🎸

    • @jessethetodd
      @jessethetodd  Рік тому +1

      Justin Guitar website and online app have been my main go-to. The online lessons have provided the backbone of my approach and gave me a specific path to follow which worked very well for the way I learn. Having the online app to track progress as well as to manage my daily practice routine (which I changed up every 2 weeks or so) was also super helpful for me.
      In addition to the Justin Guitar course and app I have used countless UA-cam tutorials for specific songs or for general techniques depending on what I was working on at a given time. I think my favorite online tutorials other than justins are those by Lee John Blackmore at supereasyguitar and by Guitar Zero to Hero (you can search those names to find their youtube channels)
      The great thing is there are so many resources out there, so many teachers and fledgling guitarists sharing their passion and approaches on UA-cam and on other online courses that there's literally "something for everyone"

    Good job! Is the guitar in tune? It sounded a bit funky. My only suggestion is to slow down and work on your tone and strumming. If the guitar is in tune, then perhaps you are pressing too hard on the strings or just missing getting them down before the strum. The strumming needs some work also. You are hitting too many strings for the C cord, for example. If you watch the video at about the 4 minute mark at the end of the song, you are hitting all strings for the C Chord. That is why it isn't as pure as it should be. Work on aiming that strum to play 6 string, 5 string, and 4 string chords accurately. Fingerpicking is hard for me! You are doing very well there! That is one of the most beautiful songs ever, IMO! Well done. So again, just to reiterate, and I think Justin would say this, work on quality of tone and timing, and not so much on speed and repertoire. I will add that it looks like you are having a heck of good time! And that is what it's all about. Anyway, not judging in a negative way, just offering some constructive feedback. This is a very realistic progression video. Thank you and keep plucking those strings bro! Awesome!
