Here’s where I’m at on this beauty. A lot more things I want to do with it but my fingers arent quite ready! I’ll keep at it though and maybe post a follow up in a few months.

Yep this is a long one - it's as much about the vibe as anything. Takes a bit of time to warm up because I lay down a loop for the entire length of the verse and chorus, and then use that as the backing track to play and sign along to. It's definitely a bit more on the raw side - trying a new approach of just taking videos with my phone and posting without any post-production mixing and editing...

Decided I've been working on this one long enough it's time to graduate it to my "beginner open mic" repertoire. As with all of these videos the purpose for me is to track my progress and continually push myself. I've been working on this for over 2 years at this point which is 2/3 of the time I've been playing. It's always been a "bucket list" song for me - when I first started I thought "I'll...

Here's the latest - been working on it a bit over a month and while there's certainly room to grow it's time to add to my repertoire. This was was a bit intimidating when I started given all the "piano chords" that Elton uses - fun to learn and you can see some of them still trip me up a bit. My goal for uploading these is to track my progress and keep me learning new songs and pushing myself -...
The Pixies Here Comes Your Man Beginner Open Mic

A bit of Pixies to hopefully soothe tired souls in these sad crazy times. This is one of those songs embedded in my musical DNA - one of the joys of learning to play guitar has been revisiting my seminal songs. Here's a fun snippet found on the interwebs: This became a concert favorite for the Pixies after they reunited in 2004 (they broke up in 1993), but when it first came out, Frank Black ha...

Absolutely love this song - while the chord structure is simple, I've found it quite a challenge to play and sing at the same time. Even though there's still plenty of room for improvement, I figured it's a fair assessment of where I am right now - and since this channel is about tracking my progress it will stand as a time capsule of sorts.

I've been working on this one a long time trying to figure out how I wanted to do it and iron out all the kinks. As you can hear I still have work to do on it but am trying to keep to my goal of tracking my progress and sharing authentically where I'm at rather than trying to replicate a professional studio recording (a looooong way to go before that's gonna happen :)).

Continuing to mark my progress as a beginner guitarist. Started a bit over two years ago - worked through the Justin Guitar grades 1-3 and now continuing to try to make sense of it all. Still lots of room for improvement on this one but my purpose for posting is to "mark the moment" and check where I'm at with goal of adding one new full song to my "repertoire" each month.

This is probably alot more fun for me to play than for you to listen to :). I know Robert Smith has been quoted saying he "hates" this song, but they have always kept it in their setlists and man this is just sooooo fun to play I have to think it's a bit toungue in cheek! As with all of these uploads, I'm looking at this more as a way to chart my progress and push myself to continually improve ...

    Hey Jesse, just discovered your videos, I watched 3rd, 4th and 5th month updates, now this. You've done quite well in 3 years. I am about to retire and I decided to attempt to learn to play. I am contemplating jumping on the Justin Guitar band wagon. We'll I muster the nerves to record myself and post. All the best. Cheers...now I am going to watch your cover of Crowded House Fall at your feet!

    I’ve come across your videos while I myself am learning through justinguitar and it’s crazy to see your progress. If you happen to see this, how much time do you practice and how many days a week? I saw you got grade 2 basically done in 6 months roughly and I’m on track to do the same. Grade 2 seems to be more involved than grade 1. How did you handle the changes in difficulty? Learning songs like this how do you go about it? Sounds great! Cheers!

      Hi Josh - thanks for the comment. the biggest reason I make these videos is to keep track of my own progress. the second biggest reason is to connect with others who are on a similar path so great to hear from you. I'd say my practice schedule is roughly 1 hour a day. I use Justin's online practice tool to keep track of what I'm doing, started by following pretty much step by step how he lays out the lesson plans and practice routines. Over time I've developed my own routines but keep the same basic structure of warm up/practice what I already know, then focus on something "theory", something "skill/technique", and learning and polishing new songs. I've found the trick for me has been to always have something I'm working on that feels like a challenge and accomplishing those one at a time has helped build a solid foundation, shown me that with practice and patience I can learn things I thought would be out of reach, and kept me wanting to learn more!

    Nice job, Jesse! I used to play this one on the piano back in high school, and picked it up the other day to see how it would work on guitar, but your version is much more complex and interesting. I also like the sound system you've got working here - very clear.

    Jesse, for being only 3 months on this, your progress is really remarkable... I remember by first steps with the guitar (well it was in the 1970's and I think Justin wasn't even borne). I taught myself the chords with a book and supported by an audio tape. To play things that you are demonstrating here in this video took me at least a year... Congratulations to your amazing progress and keep up the great work. 👏👏👏

      Thanks for the comment - the whole reason I make these videos is because I was in your exact same spot when I started and wanted to see where I could reasonably expect to be as I progressed - so I want to be able to show what's possible and also keep track of my own (slow but steady) improvement. Lots and lots of work especially in those early months but at some point it all kinda clicked. It's still a constant uphill journey but well worth every step!

    Good job so far. When you hold your pick use your thumb and forefinger to grip it and drop the other three fingers and relax them. Relax the wrist more. The strumming hand should be very relaxed. Practice slow to get this. Watch your favourite acoustic player and get a mirror and try to mimic their mannerisms.

    Hi man have you ever skip a module? Because i don't want to play blues but i also don't want to lose some good tips

    • @jessethetodd
      @jessethetodd Рік тому

      Yeah - I mainly worked straight through Grades 1-2 and once I got to Grade 3 I started getting a bit more selective. For me I also didn't love the blues stuff at first but now I've come full circle and am starting to focus more than ever on standard blues progressions and working on pentatonic lead lines and solos. What has been the most helpful for me from Justin's courses has been the consistent approach of always working on something technique-wise (whether strumming patterns or picking techniques or now things like string bending), something theory related (chords, scales, riffs using pentatonic), working on something new (a specific song with a goal of publishing a video which for me means I have it locked down), and polishing old songs to keep them fresh.

    Did you have days where you didn't feel like picking up the guitar? I went through that so much because I got discouraged due to my struggles at the time, whether that was chord transitions, strumming issues etc.

    • @jessethetodd
      @jessethetodd Рік тому

      Oh man for sure. In fact your message probably came in during one of those spells for me. I usually play 45-60 mins every day, but there are days when it's more and there are days when I just don't have the desire. On those days usually I find if I just pick up and play a song I already know or a simple chord progression or simple scale it can get the juices flowing and I'd say 90% of those times I'm really glad I did it. But sometimes I think it's also fine to take a break.

There are so many intsruments and parts in the original there are endless ways to have fun finding new things to throw in

      Thanks - it's fun to look back at these videos that are now 2 years ago for me. And like the other skills I find it gets better with practice!

    • @jessethetodd
      @jessethetodd Рік тому

      That's awesome! With consistent practice your fingers will figure it out (and it will be on to the next challenge :) ). One exercise that was helpful for me was trying to sound out the notes in a given chord shape (C shape for example) and just playing each note individually, working on finger placement to get the note to sound full and bright. Then moving to the next note and so on. Some shapes will fit under your fingers better than others while some will take more practice to teach your fingers the proper placement and mechanics. Justin at JustinGuitar has an exercise he calls "chord perfect" which was really helpful for me in that respect (easy to find in UA-cam or on the web if you're interested - he explains far far better than I can!)
