    I worked in the guitar department at Andertons from 2010-2013.
    One of my absolute favourite parts of the job was recommending guitars to kids and parents who come in for their first guitar.
    I'd spend lots of time with them and always used to love seeing the look on the kids face when they'd leave.
    Miss it quite a bit. Good to see Andertons still going strong!

    Nice video for advice on getting a beginner started. I started on a standard acoustic at 11, and my daughter started on an acoustic with an electric size neck dimension at about the same age.
    She has been a much better player than me ever since she started. I attribute some of that to her not having to struggle with the neck and the high action that my guitar had.
    Can't stress enough how important it is that the guitar "fits" the beginner well and does not pose issues with playability.
    Also buy them a digital rechargeable tuner.

    Love Justin , i started playing guitar watching his videos and at the time also brought his beginners book . I still watch Justin videos , love his way of teaching and his voice is so calm and captivating when is teaching ,Justin is a legend .
    I couldn't understand if Lee was trying to sell a beginners guitar pack to Justin or the all intention of the video was just to promote the brand East Coast guitars ? I don't know if is just me but, i felt Lee was quite tense and next second hyper like a ruching seller's man! I am sure Justin know perfectly every single aspect of a guitar and amps . I do love Andertons videos but this video i just watched because Justin was the invited but the all vibe of the video from part of Lee really didn't feel right to me !
    I completely get , is Christmas time and probably the biggest time of the year for sales , what is very important for Andertons , but to me didn't feel right ! ( i notice that sometime happens in other videos this same behaviour/aproach from Lee whith Peter and other Andertons employees when are present , but that's ok as they are Andertons (Lee) employees and Andertons main focus is sales )
    Saying this thumbs up as i really love Justin .

    One thing that screwed me up six years ago when I was first starting is I heard that it was far better to start on an acoustic because it build your finger strengthen get your hands in better condition however, it didn’t keep my interest and I ended up slipping out for a couple years until I bought my first soul electric guitar. Now I own two electric guitars and a nice acoustic guitar but when you’re first starting out by what you want, not what others suggest as far as electric and acoustic go, that’s a good advice in this video for beginners because you need to keep interest in it when your first learning it’s a slow progress, and if you lose that interest you lose your goal of learning.

    • @7171jay
      @7171jay 6 місяців тому +1

      @robert Excellent advice. An instrument that inspires is a great asset. That doesn't mean it has to be the most expensive guitar just one that is decent, set up well, and makes you want to pick it up. Whether it's a guitar that looks like the one your favorite player uses or just something that has a particular look that appeals the right guitar should call to you from across the room and make you want to play it whether that's the one on the wall of a music store you havent yet purchased or one that you have owned for a long time. A guitar that is overly difficult to play really doesn't help anyone. Honestly I think for someone starting out tuning to either E flat or even D standard at least some of the time could be a real help.

      Indeed, I saw only the other day a parent asking for guitar advice on a local community FB group and the first reply was acoustic was better to learn on. And I was like not if the child is going to get bored with acoustic!

    • @robertdysonn
      @robertdysonn 6 місяців тому +1

      @@Clewerly exactly, keeping your interest is the primary goal when you start. Now that I’ve learned to play a little bit, I do have a nice acoustic, which I play pretty often to build my strength, but I’ve already learned some things about playing already.

    • @ExternalInputs
      @ExternalInputs 6 місяців тому

      @@Clewerly Considering the first goal should be learning to play, an acoustic is a better choice. If you want to learn piano, buy a piano, not a synthesiser, so you'll focus on learning the keyboard, not endlessly fiddling with patches, settings, filters and envelopes instead. The longer you can protect the child from all the electric guitar, amp, pedal bullshit, the better, 'cause if you're the parent, you'll be the one saddled with buying all that. If you buy them a 3/4 sized travel-type acoustic, they'll have a use for that even if and when they graduate to electrics. I still have and use mine.

    • @Clewerly
      @Clewerly 6 місяців тому +1

      @@ExternalInputs I highly disagree. You need to keep them interested. If they aren't enthused by the instrument provided, you may as well not bother. Did you even watch the video and Justin's advice?
      You say if 'you' want to learn, then later if you are the parent, which I think misses the point entirely. Lee said it himself, parents often buy stuff they want, not what will keep the child interested longer than a few days

    The thing with the pricier hollowbody guitars is that you can just snatch them up play them on a whim acoustically without having to go through a procedure of plugging in switching on and fiddling about with all the dials. You can kick back and noodle away late at night without disturbing family or neighbours. They're quieter than a regular acoustic guitar which for me means that i don't feel self conscious about annoying others with my repetetive practicing. I have an Epiphone Casino Coupe now and I love it for all the above reasons - If I'd bought such a guitar when I first tried to learn instead of the budget solidbody guitar I got instead because I liked the look of it, I probably wouldn't have given up first time around. I'd be a much better player today with 20 more years practice behind me... oh well.

    Today's stuff is wild. When we started, in the 90s, we had Squier Bullets and Ibanez Starter packs. They were good for what they were, and got us where we wanted to go. Goodness knows we actually GIGGED with them for years.
    Today's beginner guitars are what we wished we could have had.
    On the topic of Squier, Classic Vibe and Vintage Modified are easily as good as a Mexican Fender. In fact, I have one of each, and they are my actual TOURING guitars. Better yet, if you do decide to modify them, at least you are not destroying a $2000 Fender. My $2000 Fender is all-stock, and stays in the studio.

    While I agree that it's better if you're just starting out to go with a less expensive, off brand instrument- you do want to make sure it's still la decent instrument that will perform properly. I taught beginners guitar for a few years at a local shop-same shop Josh from JHS pedals used to manage. He wasn't there when I was though- I'm much older than Josh, we have met though- a couple times. I bought a bass from him once and he had a car wreck one time, and I happened to be driving by when it happened. I stopped and watched them load him up- I was shocked he was alive- it was a bad wreck. Anyway, I had kids come in routinely with instruments that were just junk- they wouldn't intonate, they wouldn't hold tune, the action was horrible- you can't learn like this. We would lend them a guitar while they were in class but- then they had nothing at home to practice on but junk. And 99% of these kids quit, they lost interest- understandably. It has to function properly- doesn't have to look that great or sound like a million bucks- but it has to tune up, hold tune reasonably, and intonate reasonably. It doesn't have to intonate or hold tune perfectly- but it needs to get reasonably close. Otherwise, the kid will be constantly fighting his instrument, get frustrated, and lose interest.

    Agree wholeheartedly with what both Lee and Justin said about a first guitar, whether you're an adult or are buying for your kids. It makes more sense to start with a decent budget instrument, decent being the operative word. I own two East Coast guitars - a T-Style with a P90 in the neck that cost me less than £100 (B stock due to a supposed finish flaw but unless you went over it with a magnifying glass you'd never spot it). It played well out of the box but a new set of quality strings and a very slight setup made it very good indeed). It sounds good, looks decent and is very nice to play.
    Then again if you're fortunate enough to be a money is no object kind of customer, none of the discussion about budget matters really, even if it's a first timer's guitar.
    I also own an L1 - the same blue flame top as featured here. It looks absolutely beautiful and it sounds really, really good too - sure it's not a Gibson and you can't expect it to be, but it's way better than many other well known brands who make more expensive "entry level" LP copies without a set neck. I paid £150.00 for mine, another B Stock that was basically mint and saved me 25%. There is at least one other UK based retailer with their own in-house brand who offer an LP style model but the East Coast range probably offers most bang for your buck for this style of guitar. I'd be happy to recommend them to any player, beginner or otherwise. My son's guitar teacher has played both of mine and done some minor set up work on the Tele. He owns a whole Fender stable (no Gibson though) worth who knows what and knows his instruments as he's also a luthier. He was very complimentary about both, especially when he found out how inexpensive they were. I don't think he was being polite - I watched him play them and he was clearly enjoying himself - he also made them sound way better than I can!
    I'm very content with my affordable East Coast models, they're hard to beat for the money and I've found the quality to be very good. I wouldn't say they are only for beginners by any means - they're a great choice for anyone on a budget or anyone who just wants more toys - or if you maybe want to try a new style of guitar from your preferred instrument and don't want to break the bank. When my son started playing, we considered another East Coast as he liked both of mine but he is a Strat fan and they were edged out by the Jet JS400 he saw in Sea Foam Green. As he's a lefty, we got an impossible to pass up deal on one that I'm guessing the small shop was having trouble selling. (Also very, very good guitars for the money).
    Nowadays, there are a host of budget options out there and many of them deliver a lot more than the price tag might suggest. That never used to be the case and it's great because it definitely opens up the world of guitars to a lot more people and increases the chances that they will persevere if they have a halfway decent instrument to begin with. The only other budget instruments I own come from another well known and even bigger (European) retailer who I won't be cheeky and name here - I'm sure a lot of viewers can guess. I've never had a lemon from them either for guitars in the sub £100 -250 range. If you're a parent and your child is showing an interest in learning to play, you're not going to have to take out a mortgage to start them off on the right foot - and if they end up abandoning the idea, as some will, at least you spent a lot less than you would have on an Xbox or Playstation and the guitars showcased here only represent the cost of about 4 weeks worth of one-on-one lessons from a guitar teacher.
    Of course, you could dispense with the guitar teacher and learn through Justin's excellent and free online courses - in a year that could save you £1500 to spend on more/better gear as a reward for your progress - motivation, if you like.
    This is not a sponsored comment and for those complaining about this video being an advert, well, sure, of course it is. If you had a business would you refuse to advertise it? I'm just saying, from a customer's point of view, that it's not false advertising and Andertons have no reason not to be proud of their East Coast range - they sell musical instruments (most of them through online sales I believe) and they cater to buyers of all types and experience levels. As an online retailer, of course they advertise online, expecting them not to is just plain dumb. I originally found them years ago through UA-cam as I'm sure did a lot of other people who don't live near their physical store.

    I got my first guitar for Christmas as an 11 year old….when I asked for drums. My dad sold his CBS era fender mustang (beat to hell) for $300 in 1998 and bought what would be a worthless acoustic guitar today. They forced me into lessons of which I had Zero interest and I think the music I was listening to was Biggie and Puff daddy? lol anyways, slowly I found it more interesting and with time my taste in music evolved.

      Yeah. I'm a seasoned player but fancied a Strat so I bought an Antiquity (their version of Eastcoast) from PMT in Bristol. Exactly the same but with much nicer headstock for £99. I think these retailers are missing a trick by labelling these beginners guitars. They are fine for anyone

    These guitars and amps look like they blow the doors off the old Sears guitar and amp we learned to play on. We didn't have the internet back then and I had no clue about setups or playability. It had horrible action, it was hard as heck to play, even harder to make it sound right, it never stayed in tune and half the tuners were either too sloppy or mostly stripped out after the first year anyway. If I hadn't been so dedicated to learning to play guitar I would have given it up. I look back now and even though those cheap old Western Auto, Sears and Montgomery Ward guitars hurt our learning and playing experience overall, I can't help but think of the ways they helped us once we got our hands on a 'real' guitar.

    If indeed these Eastcoast guitars are as good if not better than the Epihone equivalent (as Justin says), and guitarists have been known to use the cheaper but more well known brands as their main guitars and gig with the likes of Squire and Epiphone then, these great guitars aren’t just for beginners are they? There is an argument for sticking with an Eastcoast well set up for life.

    Considering this is obviously aimed at Christmas and a lot of those receiving guitars as gifts will be children, hardly any time was spent on them. In this so-called beginners guide, acoustic guitars were quickly whittled down to full, 3/4 and 1/2 sizes without any talk of neck width and scale length, just "what's in stock". No mention that a 3/4 size "traveller" acoustic isn't just for kids, they're still useful when you've grown up and travelling. Much more an ad than a guide.

    My experience of learning would lead me to one opinion for people buying their first guitar.
    Don’t get a Strat. Partly because everyone does, but also because it’s difficult to get cheap single coils to sound good with a cheap amp, particularly as a beginner. Get something with humbuckers.
    I had an 80s Tokai Strat when starting (turns out it’s a cracking guitar. I still have it). A friend had a Les Paul copy - a reasonably nice one I think - and through my cheap amp his sounded SO much better, particularly without a band.
    Edit: I think this video demonstrates this pretty well actually.
