  • It seems to be under the works for a little while now but Canon is going to be releasing Canon's EL-1 Speedlite next month. It looks good on paper but it seems to be missing a feature alot of those who switched to Canon EOS R, R5, R6 Mirrorless system are looking for. It's it too late?

    Yeah another thing you’re kind of forgetting with the EL1, is the integration with the new mirrorless. A little tidbit of information that’s been floating around for a while is that a Profoto‘s ETTL isn’t as tightly integrated as the canon flashes are so what that means in this case that the ETTL from the canon EL1 can actually synchronize with the eye auto focus so therefore it’s actually more accurate and reliable in that sense as it is the only flash that has built-in cooling. I have both profoto and Godox V1, but I have some high-volume fast action shooting to do and I was really worried that my V1 is either gonna not be able to keep up or it’s going to overheat because I have over 100 subjects to take in a relatively short amount of time so the EL1 in this case pushes the buttons because it won’t overheat and it has very fast recycle time

    • @Photonees
      @Photonees 2 роки тому

      The part about ETTL II Face priority is false. It is the body doing the metering and telling the flash to output a certain amount of flashpower. The flash is a dumb thing, it doesnt meter anything. So any ETTL flash will work with that feature! But you might need to do some FEC if needed.

    • @whiterock1865
      @whiterock1865 2 роки тому +4

      @@Photonees Thank you for your response. I never said the flash was doing the metering, just that the flash system was using that data from the camera as you are correct, the flash has no metering and no AF ability. But my overall point stands that the EL-1 brings a higher degree of power to the body that I haven't seen with their AA battery flashes.

    Some of Canon's Speedlites have 2 different AF Assist Beam methods. The Canon 430EX III-RT uses pre-flashes by default for the AF Assist or you can use the IR AF Assist which is limited to the center AF point. The Canon 320EX uses an LED light for the AF Assist beam. The Canon 470EX-AI uses the IR AF Assist by default or uses pre-flashes for the AF Assist Beam. The Canon EL-100 doesn't have an IR AF Assist Beam instead it uses pre-flashes for the AF Assist Beam. The Canon EL-1 uses an IR AF Assist by default for the AF Assist Beam. Or it uses pre-flashes for the AF Assist Beam. Here is what Canon says about the EL-1 regarding the AF Assist Beam on the EL-1 and the EOS R series cameras. "When using EOS R series cameras with the Canon EL-1 the speedlite uses pre-flashes for the AF Assist Beam. Even when the AF Assist Beam is set to IR AF Assist Beam". "The camera may use its own AF Assist Beam depending on the ambient lighting". The EOS M series will not fire the AF Assist from the Canon EL-1. Some people have reported that the 580EX II and 600EX II-RT fired pre-flashes for the AF Assist Beam instead of the IR AF Assist Beam.

      In other words, mirror-less cameras don't work with current flash units such as the 600EX II-rt.

    • @hvacguy84
      @hvacguy84 Рік тому

      @@sonicvboom I found out the AF Assist Beam projection on ALL R series mirrorless is by pre-fires/ intermittent flash. When I used my 600EX II-RT it emitted pre-fires. The camera body can override the AF Assist Beam emission method even if the speedlite is set to IR AF Assist Beam. It doesn't matter what Canon EX or EL speedlite you use. The AF Assist Beam will always be projected by pre-fires.

    • @sonicvboom
      @sonicvboom Рік тому

      @@hvacguy84 I really dislike the pre-fires tech. Every time it pre-fires, my clients' eyes would be either half shut (due to the pre-fire flash), or they think I've already snapped the photo; Hence going straight into relax mode before the photos is even successfully taken. I much prefer the old school DSLR flash unit grid red beam style. Any idea how does one get the R6 to behave like a DSLR? I've been told turning off exposure simulation is one method.

    • @hvacguy84
      @hvacguy84 Рік тому

      @@sonicvboom Now what do you mean by act like a DSLR camera. The camera body makes the decision if the camera body or speedlite will emit the AF Assist Beam. You can disable the AF Assist Beam on the speedlite. Then the camera body will emit the AF Assist Beam. Also note if for some reason the camera still can't find focus. The camera body will keep trying to emit its own beam. If the speedlite has its AF Assist Beam setting enabled. The speedlite will emit pre-fires if the camera has already tried to use its own AF Assist Beam. If you need further help there is a website called "Canon Community". They can also help you out there too.

    * 28mm set = Fresnel lens warped & meltdown on four flashes
    * MG8000 & T2 run like the Energizer Bunny, no melt down nor shutdown
    * Four flashes have ATG Auto2
    * Two have not hv port for hv battery pack
    * One can do bare bulb (great even lighting from softbox)
    Also, no speedlite/speedlight can sync burst faster than 3 fps
    ASA/ISO 100

    The Godox V1 is all well and good, but it is not waterproof and has a battery compartment that's a through hole. If we position ourselves as professional photographers, then we must be ready for any conditions. I shot in the rain once and my Canon Speedlite 580EX II worked fine. Water sticks along it and 16-35 USM III and 1DX II in a stream, but the technique worked like a clock. After shooting, I put everything to dry)). Until now, everything works like a clock! And I don't know what will happen with Godox products. And the color balance, depending on the power of the luminous flux, in Kelvin is shifted to colder shades, from 6180K to 6270K. While Canon's color ranges from 5600K to 5800K. So, before buying, it is better to test everything, so that later you do not suffer from unnecessary work in Lightroom and Photoshop.

    • @RickyCheung

      I’m sure the weather resistant on the canons is top notch but nothing is waterproof. After owning canons for the part of 10+ years and nearly every flash (5x total) has been through CPS more than one the cost adds up and no where near the power of an ad200. That why it’s my system. I do feel the hesitation but I’ve done drizzle shoots with the v1 with no issues so far. Both great products but the godox has more of a complete system because they are an accessories lighting company so it’s understandable.

    I have 3 Godox/Flashpoint V1 units and I've had nothing but headaches with what I'm learning is the non-compatibility with my Canon R6 cameras. I get all sorts of issues when trying to use HSS. I can sometimes get it to work for speeds above 1/200 shutter but then other times my camera is froze at max 1/200. This has happened in two recent outdoor photo shoots when I needed a little light to fill in the shadows. What a bummer. I had to go fleshless and the shots are now ruined (per my standards). I am trying to find a solution to this V1 issue and I have some older Flashpoint Zoom Li On speed lights but I am not sure if they too are unreliable with my R6. I may just have to runaround with my AD200 on a light stand so that I can get at least OCF. Now that I am thinking about it, I have had issues with blown out shots using my AD200s as well during studio shoots. I wasn't using HSS in those scenarios and now that I'm putting two and two together, I wonder if the whole line of Godox lights/triggers are completely unreliable with my R6 camera. This really sucks. $1000 for a speed light is just insane! Thanks for putting out a nice video.

    • @RickyCheung
      @RickyCheung  3 роки тому

      I’m sorry to hear that. Interestingly, I haven’t had issues like this but than again I’m old school when it comes to flashes and shoot all manually most of the time with the v1. I have used HSS via godox trigger x pro with no issues triggering ad200s. Have you tired putting a custom channel/ID.

      Well, the Profoto A10 is similarly priced, and does not have active cooling (as far as know), nor does it have to ability to go down to 1/8192 power. The Godox V1 doesn't have those features either, and has a significantly longer recycle time (.9 secs vs. 1.5 secs). Also, the weather sealing is 1DX grade. Expensive, yes, but I think an effective tool for wedding and event photography.

      Valid points. The thing now is the canon system can’t be built out, say if I need a lot power over power the sun you can’t you need other flashes with godox you have options for ad200, ad600, etc while still keeping within the same system. Interestingly Westcott is on to something with universal wireless system with their lights.
