  • 220,000 people are rushed to the emergency room every year in the US due to hornet, wasp, and bee stings, mostly due to life threatening allergic reactions.
-Destroying a dangerous hive of a highly aggressive species of giant hornets. This was done in a park where people's safety was at risk due to the nest in case there were eggs that were still viable. Don't try this please, not all nests are bad or a hazard.

It clearly isn't active and not dangerous. Leaving an old nest would have helped to deter another hive from coming into the area if it survived winter, which would have helped prevent other hornets and wasps from moving in as well.

you're right, it is inactive right now due to the freezing temperatures. However it is within feet of a popular urban forest trail and an aggressive species of hornet. It's hard to say but based on the tiny amount of sporadic eggs laid in the nest, it likely would have died out on its own in the spring regardless.

It was already dead. The cells that are filled in aren't going to hatch at this point. Also, looks like a bald face hornet nest (though lower to the ground than I usually see them). If it is next to a popular walking trail, that would have been the perfect deterrent to other social wasp species. Stinging insects don't reuse nests, so it wouldn'tbe a concern the following warm seasons. If it is there and no one is home, let it keep new neighbors away from building in the area. I just found this video on my recommendations and was a little surprised with the description from what looks like an outdoors channel

@@guitarfreaka1458 understandable response. The deterrent idea is decent and can't hurt, but since, like you confirmed, it was dead and close to the ground it absolutely would have been shredded by weather and wouldn't last as any kind of deterrent for long. Anyway, thanks for the comment and confirming it was entirely dead.
