head gaskets dont magically heal themselves on these big blocks. your white smoke couldve easily been oil seeping past the valves (Had this happen on a '98 L29) That ticking might be the actual lifter after its wheel has been seized and grounded down. also had that happen to one of mine
dude I have a 1994 gmc sub k2500 diesel 6.5L 4x4 and I changed all the oem parts that I've been warned about them breaking down and its A TANK haven't had a single issue since these repairs/ replacement its been 8 years ..... its been in the family for 20 years and 180k miles later same engine same trans neither of those have been replaced these are special and gas mileage is actually so great its unbelievable ive had people in the streets offer me so much money so many different times....... but I aint letting go

Take your time and fix it right. Suburban’s are smokin hot right now, especially lifted beefed up ones.
