@living in a desert I just take care of the regular maintenance (though I do use full synthetic oil), and intermittently use some Lucas complete fuel system treatment on fill-ups. Mine ('97 7.4L) seems content with the care it gets. Never touched the transmission (4L80-E) beyond checking the fluid level.

The interior is destroyed from it being a work truck the last like 15 years. but I feel the same way about keeping mine ill keep fixing it as long as it doesn't get destroyed in an accident. 1997 K2500 7.4L Suburban, and C2500 7.4L Silverado. Love them. They can't be beat, if you have a long drive to make. The seats are super comfortable in the second half of the 8th gen. Newer Suburban/Silverado seats are much firmer and not as road trek friendly. GM's truck engines are very reliable, too. Both are my daily drivers Which one depends on my needs for the day, or how I'm feeling at the moment.

    • @DailyDoseOfLoko
      @DailyDoseOfLoko 9 місяців тому

@@JB917102 year late response, but absolutely yes. They get a bad reputation when compared to other diesels from the same era, Cummins and powerstroke. The 6.2 and 6.5 detroits however were never designed to compete. They were meant for efficiency with workhorse capability when needed, which they do well.
Don’t get me wrong, they have their quirks, most of which can be handled with aftermarket updates. For travel and only occasional towing, that 6.5 turbo will last a half million miles with good care. With non aggressive highway gearing, they’re capable of upper 20s mpg on the highway.

As a current owner of the 8th Gen Suburban, those cup holders in the second row seat pull-down suck, unless the vehicle is stationary. They are to shallow to be effective, and under no circumstance will they hold a standard beverage cup (or larger) in a curve or if a large bump is encountered. The passenger side offers far better access to the third row seating, as it slides forward. Folding the second row flat, the headrest gets moved from the seat back, to the holes in the folded forward seat for storage. This The 7th and 8th Generation of Suburban will lay waste to the modern Suburbans in durability, and ruggedness. It's not equipped with high HP engines, but they have lots of torque. They are also far easier and more affordable to repair than the current generations, as there is far less electronics to go bad. Engine specs: 5.7L Vortec: 255HP, Torque: 330lb-ft (available in 1500 and 2500, standard). The 7.4L Vortec: 290HP, Torque 410 lb-ft (a C/K 2500 option only). I also love that there is no full lift-gate option for this generation, and prefer the "barn door" option. Lift-gates suck, for tall people.

The 5.7 is a great engine with the same torque as the newer 5.3vortec engines in the newer suburbans, people need to understand that is 2500 heavy duty suburban which is alot heavier then the 1500 model and you got it paired with the smaller engine 5.7 vortec.....if you were to have the 7.4 vortec then you would see how much faster it would be able to move that heavy 2500 suburban, the smaller 5.7 vortec is very strong and decently fast but only in a 1500 model....when you compare accelaration times between a 1999 1500 suburban with 5.7 vortec vs a 2013 1500 suburban with a 5.3 vortec you will see there really ain't much difference in accelaration times..... especially when both are towing a heavy trailer......the 90's 5.7 and 7.4 vortec engines are legendary!!!

My parents had a 89 GMC Suburban, 93 Chevy Suburban, 96 Chevy Suburban, and finally an 02 Chevy Tahoe. I think my favorite was the 96 which is the closest to this one. It looked very much like this one with the styling. It was only a half-ton Suburban, but with a lift the fender flares like this one, but the whole thing was a dark blue. It was a LT with leather seats, electronic 4wd, and rarity in the market...a fold-down flat screen tv in the ceiling. It was in between the driver and front passenger and folded down to face the back seats. The sound was linked to the vehicles sound system. It used the radio antenna to pick up VHF and UHF stations. It did not have a big boomerang antenna on top. It also had a VCR underneath the second row passenger seat behind the driver. In place of the cupholders near the floor on the second row, it had 2 knobs for tv controls. It was a great Suburban. It had a 40 gallon fuel tank which would have buried us when gas was $4+ in Texas. But my parents had already traded it in by 2002 for the Tahoe. I wish they had kept it all these years, because I think it would still be a great vehicle now. I would consider trying to put a 6-speed transmission on the 5.7 to help out the fuel mileage though.

I'm an original owner of a 1995 4WD LT 1500 model with only 150k miles on it. Texas heat is taking a toll on the soft parts, but mechanically the Suburban still operates perfectly. But I still like this version's body style...nice clean look. My fender flares were taking a really bad beating from the sun, so I gave them two coats of Raptor black bed liner spray which made a heck of a difference.

I have a super pristine 100% rust-free '95 Yukon 4x4 SLT (leather seats) with the 5.7 liter (Non-Vortec) with TBI. I bought it 17 years ago from its original owner when it had only 83k miles on it, and have pampered this vehicle since. It now has 218k miles on its original engine & trans, and has never let me down. While I'm not happy with its rather anemic performance (only 200hp), it has served me well and continues to be reliable and a pleasure to drive (despite its horsepower shortcoming). I'm looking to find a later-model '96 to 2006 Yukon/Tahoe/Suburban to eventually replace my '95.

As I watch this I am Camping in my 1999 K2500 . It’s a work horse, rubber floors, crank windows, but does have power locks. Yes that was an option. Mine has the 5.7 and does decent on mileage. And 4x4 is a lever in my opinion only way to go. No push button. My vehicle at work is a 2017 C1500 suburban (office has 3 of them). Holy hell electrical issues...... air bag sensor issues.... but great on mileage and still comfortable. As far as your comment about loose steering well that is a Chevrolet trade make. After 100,000 or if abused the front ends tend to get loose. Kind of how people with Jeeps accept death wobble. Any way 92 -99 great used vehicle for the money! Also have a 95 K1500 burban and a lot of other Chevrolet pickups.

I have a '98 Suburban 5.7L as a daily driver - the rig just runs and runs. My only issues have been the fuel pump (a chronic problem with these trucks, apparently) and a brake system leak, otherwise it's been rock solid for me...

I’ve had mine for 5 years. I got it at 67,000 miles. I now have 168,000 and still going. I’ve done power steering hoses, cooling system, all suspension components brakes. fuel pump and distributor where only things ever needed to be towed home over. This truck took me from California to Virginia and back, from Virginia to Michigan twice and to Texas from Virginia three times. This has been hands down the most reliable and most comfortable truck iv ever had and the oldest. I will replace the power train when its time but I feel after doing my gaskets fuel system and timing chain I will get another 100000 miles. It’s just a fantastic truck. Chevy did this one right.

Towed a 30ft dutchmen rv from long island ny to san diego ca.. 5 years and 10 trips later from cali to midwest and back. Idk if i will ever give this truck up.. Right now it only needs valve cover gaskets replaced. 😎 exact same color as video but tail gate horizontal doors and push button 4x4.

I have long wanted an excuse to purchase an old style Suburban like this. I'm 70yo, so I really tend toward basics, and don't feel deprived because of the lower tech.
And, gas milage isn't a big issue. Age and wear and tear on my body means I take far fewer long trips where fuel milage would greatly add to my costs.
And a solid built 3/4 ton boat is added protection in an accident. A Prius isn't gonna do much more than dent the bumper in a collision of these beasts, while that little thing would be totaled.
It's either this rig, which is easier to find, or an old Jeep Wagoneer 4X4. There's another old school classic worth driving, with even less tech. And a boatload of creds and history.

That steering slop is NOT failed design or "old tech" . That's a worn rag joint. A new rag joint is about $35 and 1 hour labor. I just did mine a month ago and that slop is 100% gone.

Back in the day whenever we were in the Northern Virginia/Metro D.C. area passing through, we’d almost always see a few 2500 Series Black Suburbans that were occupied by several guys wearing dark sunglasses & even occasionally see several traveling together & they’d have the rear tailgate glass up with another guy in there with what looked like an M4 platform rifle, along with the dark sunglasses as well. Maybe they were out for a drive on a sunny day in a bad area?
