Love the HOG, been visiting weekly for over 30 years, been my new cassette/cd source all along. I've purchased some gear over the years as well, but not recently. Before album sales dwindled, they used to open at midnight to sell the hot new releases.
Hey Austin, If memory serves me correctly, I was the original purchaser of that HOG Les Paul. I'm 99% sure mine was serial number 22 of 30. Some time around 1999 I sold it to Elliot down at Rumble Seat music, along with a HOG 25th anniversary Silverburst standard. Back when I sold it, Elliot had MANY MANY Japanese collectors on speed dial, and it would not surprise me if that is how that guitar ended up in Japan. The ORIGINAL case that came with the 30th Studio was a Black Levys Gig Bag, and the Les Paul photo was installed on the guitar, right before my very eyes by Andy Babiuk, the author of "Beatles Gear" and "Rolling Stones Gear".
I especially shopped for a studio just for the reason. I ended up with a 97 ebony w/ gold trim and 496/500 pups. For $800. With a chainsaw case. Now I've replaced anything that could be labeled inferior including Kluson locking tuners, Tonespro locking bridge, Tusc XL nut, CTS 500K pots, 50's wiring with cloth wrapped wires. Love this guitar now.
There is another HOG guitar on display at the shop. Has house of guitars spelled out in abalone on the fret board. I can't remember if it's a custom or a standard custom shop though.
I grew up in Irondequoit NY where the House of Guitars is located. 2 of my best friends, twin brothers, have worked there for years. I've spent much time and money at this place and it's one of my favorite places in the world. Thank you so much for giving this little shop some love. By the way I bought the Billie Joe Armstrong soft shell guitar case from you. Love your videos. Keep it up! 🤘

Such a cool place, amazing selection of gear, all bands that signed the walls, the huge selection of albums, the vibe... Can you steam the fretboard back into place? I am sure they didn’t use hide glue on a Studio even back then right? Perhaps you can confirm whether you’ve heard this or have any feedback on this but I read that genuine hide glue used on today’s Custom Shop models as well as the 50’s models they’re much easier to repair by simply steaming the neck off? The maple tops they use an epoxy however so you cannot steam a maple top off but from what I’ve read you can steam the hide glued neck off for repair reasons. Any insight on that?
No, I think you’re right about the switch tip. Without going to my office, moving the 2 Les Pauls and an SG sitting in front of my Studio and looking at the tip I believe they’re a bit longer and taper toward the metal switch a bit tighter.

Hi Austin, I watch your videos almost every day, I think this and the Johnny Winter guitar are the best sounding by far!! Also, your playing is getting a lot better!! Thank you very much making my morning coffee routine a little better!!
Did you no notice that the string spacing is off? Your D is too close to the A at the bridge. It looks fine at the nut, so is the saddle slot misaligned, or did you just not seat it properly when you restrung it?
Dude the HOG is such a cool place, they’ve got a crap ton of guitars and whatnot on the first floor, drums upstairs and records/cds/cassettes in the basement. i’ve been there twice and recently got an awesome Guild acoustic!
I have an early 90's Les paul with gold hardware - It doesn't have a celluloid pickguard, but has all the same metal oxidisation that you blame on celluloid! like the green bubbling gold plating, rusty screws, pitting on the bridge, and finish checking!
I have a 93 Studio in Alpine white, and I thought that, if memory serves me, they called that neck shape a 50's D. I got mine in 95 I believe, at a pawn shop in basically new condition except whoever had it before me was very inexperienced and when they changed the strings they scratched up the headstock a great deal. Since then ive had tattoos on it, and eventually had it pinstriped, Im looking for a way to get the pinstriping off now considering the prices these things go for nowadays, it was my first Gibson though and I doubt if i ever get rid of it.
I bought a new ebony SG Standard last year after years of wanting, if now I wanted a Les Paul the Studio would be the one, the binding isn’t an issue and it could be the perfect Gibson.
Nice Guitar Troglydude!!🤘 (And I know You want to hear how much I would choose anything but gold😁)..... Really though , the gold is not too bad on this model (I would have chosen Darkened Chrome). But hey , the early nineties (all of my guitars are from etc) were awesome!!
While removing celluloid pickguards may seem like a good idea, the problem is that once removed and not held in position by the screws, they will shrink. So I would suggest that if you DO remove one, screw it down to a piece of wood to help keep it from shrinking.
Question, are celluloid picking guards the only plastic that off gases? Cool find btw. I have a thing for ebony/black Les Pauls, with the cream colored plastics. Thank you.
That is sweet something about the Studio model always makes me smile. Epiphone Studios are literally the cheapest entry point. This guitar really needed fingerboard binding however. I would switch the bridge to something closer to a Slash Zebra but wouldn't be able to bring myself to do it on that exact guitar. The reason I love the Studio model. They aren't precious. As far as pickguards go.. I'd probably look for "Boburst" or somebody like him. You really should get a Bob built guitar. I wish the Crown was done as a truss rod cover as well.

You're getting really good at working that fretboard, man! Id recommend practising fingerpicking, i inherently got better at picking and strumming by fingerpicking for a while. Starting to become a real treat watching you demo them badboys now. Keep rocking!!
HOG commercials are burned into the memories of every Gen X person from the Rochester area (Dansville, NY for me)... "the great GREAT House of Guitars..." and "hop...hop..." Easter bunny ad... also remember being amused as a kid (because it just sounded funny at the time and I had no idea what it meant) when, in one commercial, they kept advertising a new album "Who Who Are You ?" (at 8 or 9 years old, not realizing that was the band AND album name)... good times...
@@allisonholmesmusic97 Yes ! That's a great point - a lot of their weirdest commercials were right around the time that MTV hit the scene... haha... They were a sonic & visual assault with 1970s production "quality" that were quite a contrast to the new era that MTV was starting. Some of the old ads are actually on YT if you want a hit of nostalgia :)
I think that the best studios are the 2018 ones. They got better colors (vintage sunburst and smokehouse burst), binding on the neck, hard shell case (made in Canada), 57 classic & 57 classic plus pickups (both are p.a.f).
You should have a go at making a replacement pickguard yourself. All you need is some pearloid plastic, a coping saw and a Dremel for bevelling the edges. If you purchase the pearloid material, you could probably just get it laser cut locally. I'd do it for you but I live far, far away.
Been going to the HOG for the last 30 years. I've bought at least 5 guitars and countless other things. It's a different place for sure but always a fun road trip.
It's interesting to see clear coat issues with 90's era guitars. It seemed every car and truck from the same era had the same issues. Did they try similar paint processes on guitars? I seem to remember the clear coat peeling on autos being blamed on new EPA regulations at the time, but don't quote me on it. Curious to learn if anyone here knows they were trying similar applications back in the 1990's.
I really wanted to see this thing under the blacklight :( Whatever happened to your blacklight testing of all your demos? That was the original thing that got me hooked on your channel.
Knowing the TrogMeister, he probably will. not. rest. until he finds the HOG 30th anniversary studio WITH the signed Les Paul back cover plate!… or at least a re-placement signed Les Paul back cover plate to go with this bad boy!!! I love Les Paul studios. Real BANG for your Les Paul dollar.
I have one of the original "93 Nighthawks that is doing the flaking thing on the finish. I'm not really worried in my case because it's a player that has had a headstock repair but it's nice to know why it's happening
Looks good. I like it. Still rare collectible regardless but I think having the Les pictures and signature that originally came with it would look good together in your future museum.
I have an Alpine White 1993 Les Paul Studio that has faded to a cream/almost tan color. It is beat to shit, it’s covered in finish checking and old war wounds, and has a bunch of replacement parts. But it’s my daily player, and it’s a great Les Paul.
My first Gibson was a black 1991 Studio. It was a nice guitar for the money but the 1997 Standard I later owned was a much better guitar. Ive also tried other newer Studios that felt better so I guess not all early 90s Studios were all that great although those ebony fretboards were a really cool feature.
Ahhh, a dope guitar from my hometown go to guitar shop!!! That's awesome, would love to know how it made it to Japan, but they are a world renowned shop.

Austin have you ever did a review on a es-300 gibson? Like the with single side ways pickup?
You're getting really good at working that fretboard, man!
Id recommend practising fingerpicking, i inherently got better at picking and strumming by fingerpicking for a while. Starting to become a real treat watching you demo them badboys now. Keep rocking!!
Sounds great!
That one is a keeper. I am impressed with the condition.
I remember those! I grew up in Syracuse and the ads would pop up on MTV once in a while
@@allisonholmesmusic97 Yes !
Just curious, how does one purchase a guitar from you? Do you have a website?? Thanks so much, I enjoy your channel very much!! 🙏🤘
Yes- www.troglysguitarshow.com or on reverb. Links in description
I absolutely love the 498t.
I think that the best studios are the 2018 ones.
They got better colors (vintage sunburst and smokehouse burst), binding on the neck, hard shell case (made in Canada), 57 classic & 57 classic plus pickups (both are p.a.f).
Really nice find congrats, I hope I get to go to your 🎸museum some day.😎
You should have a go at making a replacement pickguard yourself.
I have a 2021 gibson les paul 60s standard and a guy is wanting to trade me a custom shop 1951 tele reliced what should I do does anyone have advice
Got a 91 Studio Lite. What a killer guitar it is. 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
I see that same fretboard affect from luthiers who over roll the edges.
Hell yeah! I love the HOG, they're my favorite local music store!
Guitars have frequently been painted with automotive paint since the 1950's and often still are today.
Great Sounding Guitars !
I really wanted to see this thing under the blacklight :( Whatever happened to your blacklight testing of all your demos? That was the original thing that got me hooked on your channel.
Why no black light??
Knowing the TrogMeister, he probably will. not. rest. until he finds the HOG 30th anniversary studio WITH the signed Les Paul back cover plate!… or at least a re-placement signed Les Paul back cover plate to go with this bad boy!!! I love Les Paul studios. Real BANG for your Les Paul dollar.
Damn I lived in Rochester and never knew this...now I need to go back
I have one of the original "93 Nighthawks that is doing the flaking thing on the finish. I'm not really worried in my case because it's a player that has had a headstock repair but it's nice to know why it's happening
Looks good. I like it. Still rare collectible regardless but I think having the Les pictures and signature that originally came with it would look good together in your future museum.
Could you coat the pick guard in something to seal it in and stop the off gasing?
The store that ate my brain!
i will travell all the way too the USA Trogladites Too check out the Museum Cool pity the back plate was missing , Take Kare
That's awesome, would love to know how it made it to Japan, but they are a world renowned shop.
having disabled hands i ned thin necks,,shergold, fenders,,but ive ended up with a 1993 studio, cherry,,ebony frets and gold hardware,,and i find it odd but i like it,happy with it :-) im converted to at least thinking they are still very playable,,the action is ace ect..came in one of them same cases too. i think i got a bargain
got a 1996 gem series studio since gold hardware and p90 pick ups ,,brothers now
