I can't believe Tyson went from "Nipples the Enchilada and Arms the Kitsune (Kitsune is Japanese for Fox)" to the Sonic comics and then to...here.
Honestly, if they do a follow-up to Mania, I'd like to see them make one with entirely new content... These guys clearly have the design skills to not rest on nostalgia laurels.
Michael Scally I thinking they didn't have a huge budget. But now since the game was very very well received SEGA will toss the money at them for the next one.

There are actually two known references to post-Genesis stuff in Mania.
- Studiopolis Zone is named after the voice acting studio that records the voice acting for the Modern Sonic games.
- The special stages borrow elements from Sonic Heroes' special stages (get spheres to go faster).
I too have a hard time placing it above sonic and knuckles 3 but that could just be due to nostalgia.
Hope this persuades Sega that a decent, fan-derived Streets of Rage game would be a good idea

I don't want Sonic Team to stop making 3D sonics, because I feel like there has to be a really good one in there somewhere. We've got plenty of great 2D sonics, and but not really any great 3D ones. I really like 3D platformers too, and they've just about died off.

Easily my second favorite Sonic game and tied as my favorite game with Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic Mania is the true successor to Sonic 3&K. Also, will you archive your Mania playthrough Simmons?

to me this is Sonic 4. only gripe and it's not really anything negative but when i faced that 2nd boss where you had to play the tetris style game I thought for sure at some point there would be some sort of sonic spinball level or boss. it was a reach and I knew i was crossin my fingers on that but hoped it would happen but didn't. also the levels you can play completely different with tails or knuckles. I went thru it with sonic and there is def things you can't get to with him that you could with tails or especially knuckles since he can climb walls.
There are Spinball sound effects in the game, at least. Still, it would be cool if there was a boss fight like Spinball, like how the boss you mentioned was from Mean Bean Machine.

i was thinking about capcom as well, they literally do nothing with their old franchises, and at least we got terrible games from nintendo, like federation force, and the appearance of samus in smash bros, capcom doesnt even do that
I immediately thought of Cashcom. They hardwired their Megaman hate boner into my brain. Tons of projects cancelled.
Don't get me wrong, Nintendo's done some crap too but CC is far worse.
Since I grew up during the "Dreamcast era" I'm not as interested in this as I am in Forces. I can agree it looks fantastic, but I dunno I'm just not into old school games in general with the exception of Capcom fighting games at least.

He only played Sega CD once !! So he doesn't know . He didn't give himself a real chance to enjoy it . That's all .
I would say 3 and knuckles was the best but I really dislike the blank and inexpressive sprites
I feel like you're underselling how good Sonic Advance 1 and 2 were, personally. Sonic Rush had more dodgy level design but it was also decent.
Those games have aged as well as a banana from 1999 has. They have terrible pacing, hit detection, dodgy controls, bad level design, and an overabundance on story and voice acting. They represent everything Mania is not. Which is a bad game. You being a child when they were new does not make them good.
Also now just saw it was advance not adventure. Which are OK but contain the same problem as listed above to a smaller degree and of course no voice acting but definitely an abundance of shitty characters.
I would say they don't deserve to be lumped with dumpster fires like Sonic Adventure and Sonic 4. That's a grave injustice for what are definitely serviceable if not perfect Sonic games. Advance 3 is the closest to Sonic 4 levels of crap but even it isn't as unplayable as Sonic 4 and Adventure are and the things it does to kinda change up the formula weren't so intrusive to the core gameplay.
Also I couldn't care less about having extra characters to play as personally, as long as I'm not obligated to play them. And for the most part, I'm not. Again, Advance 3 is the main offender here for hiding Chaos Emeralds behind certain character abilities like Knuckles punching down walls and Tails flying to platforms out of reach on foot for those dumbass fucking chao.
I agree wholeheartedly that the Advance games aren't as good as 2 and 3&K, but they're not so bad that they should be sucked into the amorphous asshole that is the lion's share of post-Mega Drive era Sonic which, correct me if i'm wrong, you seem to agree with judging by the strong word choice of "ok" describing them so I'll leave it with this.
Yeah i would say the advance titles are playable probably 7/10 games

I'm not here to refute Sonic Mania's insane quality, and I agree with the hot takes coming Nintendo's way.
that being said, there are Sonic games I would say are great.If anything, I know it's by design, but I feel like in some ways, Sonic Mania is still regressive in comparison to something like the Sonic Advance series, where becsides the obnoxious Chaos emerald stuff, added some really great things of substance to the 2D Sonic formula.
I feel like the absence that has made the heart grow fonder is this game's greatest strength. Sonic Mania and it's recycled Zone concepts and lack of pushing the formula much beyond what even the Game Gear games at the time would have would probably have labled Sonic Mania as a tired game that was out of ideas and that should have introduced a new hero to the mix.
I feel like this game should have had a playable Rosy the Rascal or one of the chaotix or... SOMETHING.
Oh well, room for them to really stretch their wings in the sequel, yes?
they added new elements to old stages in the second act to teh point the level is almost completely different, the robo bosses bring new elements and there is KNUCKLES AND KNUCKLES.

Still don't like the Physics of Sonic Games that much but that's more a personal preference. Loved Sonic 2 when I was younger. This game is fun but I would personally give it about a 7.

I think the presentation, the level design, the easter eggs, the secrets are all top notch. I just dont like the basic gameplay physics for the most part.
Sooooo what sonic game did you truly enjoy? because it seems a lot of the big ones were shot down harder than they needed to, you said Sonic CD was the biggest disappointment but you only played it once, I don't know if you're among the play it once for quick judgment type but I honestly think you should go back and try it and experience the whole of the game because theres more to the game than you think, no game is perfect and we shouldn't always expect to get the perfect game. all I'm sayin
As someone who has absolutely no nostalgia for classic "Sonic", I honestly couldn't care less about this game. I've tried several times with a couple entries but just could never really get into them.
But you know what, good for the people who have been wanting another classic feeling 2D "Sonic" game like this. It's proven to be a decent enough game and it's getting a good amount of praise all around. It might not be my thing but I can still be glad for others.

It's so weird to here Simmons say positive things about sonic. Usually Max and co just S*** on sonic whether his games are good or bad; granted some of it is not unwarranted.

YoVideogames I casually watch the channel here and there becuz I like watching ur guys playthroughs. It just seems that way when you guys do a sonic playthrough. I watched the video and the review was well explained (not becuz u said it was a good game, but becuz u just explained ur opinion well).
I feel like a lot of people are forgetting about the Sonic Advance titles.
They were all pretty great.

I'm not even that bummed out about the lack of stage transitions. What I'm really bummed about is them not bringing back the Icecap Zone... I mean it's only arguably the best stage in the entire franchise, so them picking Flying Battery, Lava Reef and Hydro City over this gem boggles my mind.
yeah screw lava bland reef ice cap should of been in its place, imagine the boss of ice cap zone is snow boarding and you have to hit him while you are also snowboarding, instead we get a disappoiting boss inspired by evil knievel.
