- It's been a long time coming, and with the release of Sonic Mania, gamers finally have a direct sequel to the Genesis Sonic games. Sonic Mania proves that the 16-bit, 2D Sonic formula is still just as potent now as it was over twenty years ago, and hopefully, the success of this game will mark the beginning of a Sonic Renaissance.

It's sad when a fan made sonic game is better than a lot of the modern sonic games.
Sega NEEDS to have Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, and Pagodawest do so something like this again. This is how Sonic should be.
ShakeFan14 Christian is a fucking badass he was behind the PC and Xbox 360 ports of sonic CD and the mobile ports of the classic games. I would say they should hire him officially but if they did he would have to listen to them.

My mom would play Sonic 2 for hours on the Sega when I was young, and I had a blast playing it with her. I already bought it for her on steam and walked her through how to set up the controller I shipped her. Now we just need a proper rebuild similar to Sonic Mania of something like Doom, Duke Nukem, or Wolfenstein and I'll be really happy.
Alexandre Domingos as much as i despise polygon they have a point, this game is pretty much a 70/30 spilt in terms of new/old. if you think that ok fine different strokes, but i for one want new games not reimagined old ones
That Polygon review was a joke. Sonic Mania is supposed to recapture the spirit of the original Genesis games. If they started messing around with the mechanics, that would have alienated the people the game was made for.
The guy who reviewed it also seemed to be quite incompetent, based on his remarks about how unfair the game is. I was half expecting him to make the stupid comparison to Dark Souls like some reviewers did with Crash. Because that comparison makes tons of sense. It's totally logical to compare the gameplay of a platformer to an action-RPG.

0:22 I'd say it started to be incosistent as shit since 2007/2008. Because before that, Sonic was pretty consistent! The 3D games had multiple playstyles, your traditional rock music, full 3D movement, same concept, emblems/collectibles, etc. Sonic Adventure 1, 2 and Heroes are all around the same. Multiple stories are there and a final story segment. It remained consistent until the dumpster fire that is Sonic 06.

In all seriousness, it's a great review for a great game. Now if only we can get a 3D Sonic game like the Adventure games and Sonic Unleashed.....
Also, if you like the 2D games, i recommend you play the Sonic Advance trilogy for the GBA, of Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure. Nobody ever talks about them.

So, basically a fantastic game if you have reflexes that don't suck (mine do). Some of my friends will be rather happy, but there's no way I could make it work. Oh well, full release of D:OS2 is coming up soon, and turn-based CRPGs in general are flourishing in the indie market, so I should be fine. I should just feel good for the people that like reflex-based platformers, since you guys now get more representation in the indie market, which is great! Best of luck to you going forward with that!
Best sonic game since 1994 is a statement I cant quite get behind:
e.g Sonic Generations (2011), Colours (2010), the Advance series (2001 - 2004), Rush (2005) and a couple more.

I like Generations and Colours, but I like Sonic Mania more. It shouldn't be taken as a sleight against the good 3D Sonic games, even if they're few and far between.
Fringy True I prefer mania the 3D games too it's just I heard a similar phrase in a video that said the only good sonic game since 1994.
What is even more baffling is that Sonic Mania is an example of what Nintendo should have done with AM2R. Don't get me wrong I am so damned happy that we are getting a proper new Metroid on 3DS with a new Prime on Switch. But I think Nintendo could take these fan projects like this and work with the creators to polish them up and publish them and make money off of them. I have had some odd glitches with Sonic Mania on the Switch. Sluggish swapping to the home screen, and some odd lockup after defeating the boss of chemical plant act 2 I believe. Other than that, its a fine sonic game that has some really lengthy levels.
Sonic has had a rocky road of sorts. I thought Lost World was ok, but it needed refinement of it's parkour system. Generations was fantastic and I have heard good things about colors though I have never played that one for myself. I think that the GBA sonic games often get overlooked as well. Sonic Advance 2 was great.
I do think Sonic 3 and Knuckles did water sections right, and Game Apologist did a decent job explaining why that game did a lot of things right, even better than Mania.
Look Fringy I really love your content and humour but I can escape the feeling this is another series you'll do like 2 episodes of and then never resume. The video itself was good, all you need now is a consistent upload schedule
Nope, not this time. I like the format, and I'm gonna try and make it work. As for the consistent upload schedule, I don't know what to tell you. These videos take time. I'm currently working on a video about Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. It's gonna be a few weeks, just like how the Splatoon 2 video took a few weeks. Long form, in-depth reviews take time.

My only experience with any sonic game is running occasionally jumping and watching the game play itself. I have to say though this looked like it required input at at least some level from the player I might just give it a try for that.

I can safely say the only good 3D sonic games are colors unleashed and generations. Lost world is fine,adventure 1,and 2 well the sonic portions are pretty good. But as a whole in my opinion nothing matches these 3. Also mania kicks ass.

The fps dips was due to his capture card or PC because every version of Sonic Mania runs at a silky smooth 60fps

Even though I would play both, I have to say Crash. When Sonic is shit it is shit, when Crash is shit it is still a decent game. I have only seen 2 Sonic games since the Genesis era that was good games, Sonic Generations and Sonic Mania. While even though Crash of the Titans and Mind Over Mutant is seen as the worst Crash games, I still liked those.

When I saw Sonic Mania, I was hyped for this game, I really was. But, now that it is out and I have played it, I have been getting a little stressed out with this new title in the Sonic series and it is all of one thing that I try so hard to look pass it like the same thing with Sonic CD, but it just can't be ignored. And that is one of the worst special stages in history. Sonic Mania's special stages looks cool and plays well(though Sonic feels like he drags his feet when coming to turns) but, this can't save this from the horrible design of special stage 4,5,6 and a bit unfairness in special stage 7. I had to delete my save file more than 5 times because of this. Special stage 4 is absolutely horrendous because there is no bumpers from keeping you to fall off and asks you to keep make a sharp turn around more than 12 times while avoid the damn spike balls. Special Stage 5 likes to use bumpers as a troll tool to get you to run into not only spike balls, but bombs also. And you are also asked to make those fricking sharp turns. Special Stage 6 isn't that littered with hazards, but it is asks you to do those turns and I know I will fall off. Special stage 7 isn't that bad but it I can't see the pitfalls that well, so watch out. Also the collision detection seems to be a tad off. Another big flaw is that is if you see it but miss it, you know what that means? RESTART THE WHOLE ZONE AGIAN. You might say that in Sonic 3, you can miss it and this is true, but you can comeback to it if you see it. And I got most of them when playing sonic classic collection on my dsi. One example is the special stage ring hovering above a pool of water in a wall of green hill act 2. I saw it in my first run, but ended up missing it because it is near funnel structure with a spring pointing you in the direction of the pit of the funnel. You can say be careful, but it got worse one I saw a another ring in studiopolis act 1 and ended up missing because I went up the wall that leads to the path to the miniboss. It is not that bad compared to advance 2 , but it is just generally bad. They're well hidden though. I want it give this game a 9.7, but now it is stripped down to a 8.5 by me. This game has great level design, aesthetics, and good original and elaborated ideas on old zones, but it is the same situation with sonic advance 1: awesome game but, a very obnoxious downside. I wish I could love and cherish this game as a big part of my summer of 2017, but I really only play for 1 hour before saying in my mind "I'm not playing this anymore". If you enjoyed it that is great, but I'm not in the mood for hate comments because of how ticked I am with these special stages. Probably had to try more than 13 times at the rest of these special stages.

how to make a great sonic game:
-don't include any edge
-don't include modern sonic or any modern character
-don't make new characters based on deviant art fan art
-be carefull with new character designs and writting
-study the golden age and aplly some of it's best elements to the new game
-include golden age references to feed the major nostalgia
-don't hype up the game to much
-spend more time programing the game so it doesn't end up like an unfinished pile of crap like sonic 06
-don't include any furr
-pay attention to detail
-think about quallity not money
-try to spend more time to writte a better story
-don't include too many clichés
-make something new with robotnik instead of making him capture critters and turning them into robots
-make new levels and areas with new fun elements and mechanics
-don't make the whole enitre story about chaos emerelads or any kind of magical stones
-don't make the story about any kind of other magical object such as some amulet or something
-don't inlclude any realistic humans
-don't include any beastiality
-don't include any princesses
-don't let hipster and sjw's influence the game
-don't make the characters hipsters
-don't inject steroids in the characters
-& Knuckles
...So basically don't be anything interesting?
