  • A demo created by Mike Saarna that shows 69 individual animated sprites against a graphical background with some pretty rocking pokey music without flicker. This is being played on the ITC lab 7800 hardware from a BackBit Pro flash cartridge running the latest firmware.
It is demonstrations like this that are the reason that the 7800 is my favorite Atari console.
    Excellent work Mike!!

Atari 7800 never cease to amaze me with such good demos.

It certainly appears to be a much more capable game console than Atari was ever willing to invest into back in the day that is for sure! BTW, this demo was updated yesterday and is now called 86 sprites since as the name implies, there are now 86 rings in the new version of the demo.

Love the music switch a little after the halfway point.

Exactly! Too bad that part doesn't go on for a longer amount of time! Very impressive how artists and programmers are able to get the Pokey chip to sound the way it can in games and demos.

Those look like that ships that attack at the beginning of Xevious for the 7800!

I could see that yeah! They are supposed to be little rings twirling about the screen. If you could see them up close they resemble the rings collected by a certain speedy hedgehog.

@@IvoryTowerCollections oh yeah. I see that as well. And, based on the title, there's sixty nine of them, right?

I believe so although I will admit, I've not sat there to try and count them to be sure. But the programmer that made it is pretty talented so I've no reason to doubt it.

You know, there is now an updated version of this demo that now has 86 rings as apparently the programmer found a for more cycles to squeeze some additional sprites into.
