Of all the comedians who were on television when i was growing up, it is Dave Allen i miss the most. He was avuncular, dapper, laid back and urbane, but his comedy came from a great and deep well of anger aimed at the Establishment, its institutions, its representatives, and organised religion, particularly the Catholic Church of his Irish youth. There was/is no one like him, then or now.
MH7400 loved Dave Allen always thought of him as the George Carlin of the UK. His insights and comedic observations place him among the best. Thanks Dave for all the laughs and smiles throughout the years!
Dave Allen had a Catholic father and Protestant mother and was taught by Nuns at a Catholic school. The Nuns told him that as his mother was of the wrong religion she would burn in hell for eternity when she died, he was four years old at the time. I imagine this experience amongst others fuelled his disregard for all religions.
Some Nuns can be rather spiteful beings, that is unfortunate but unsurprising. I mean telling a child that goes far beyond religious dogma in my view and into straight cruelty, but it was a different age.
