  • Continuing our series of videos explaining the different volunteer roles there are at parkrun. In this video, we explore time keeping. The Timekeeper is responsible for recording the finish times of all participants at the event (using the Virtual Volunteer app).

Hugely helpful video as I'm just about to do the timekeeping role and was a bit freaked out about the prospect but the two volunteers in this video have explained it beautifully and put my mind at rest, it was especially good to see there are two timekeepers. Roll on tomorrow!

This fills in a blank space for me. I've yet to do a parkrun, and I've always thought the timekeeping looked haphazard only knowing about the tokens and scanning. It looks like at this event, there are two timekeepers, so redundancy is built in. Great system! When I do join in, I'll feel confident that my time is accurately measured. I'll still record it on my Garmin, though ;-)

You should do a video on what it is really like. Glasgow in November and it is sleeting and your phone gets wet and the screen freezes and there are another 200 runners to process. Also the role of number checker.

I was looking for this too. I think they could actually film the process tracking the time for runners so we could know what exactly we need to do.

Doesn’t really explain how timekeeping works, for example I cross the line, somebody presses their button I get into a queue and then get given a widget thing, and then get into another queue and give the widget and my barcode to someone else, how does the widget time tie up with time the timekeeper time?
But I do appreciate that people are volunteering and that’s great, just that the vide doesn’t explain what it says on the tin.

The timekeeper starts the run on the app - it's a glorified stopwatch. Each time the timekeeper taps it remembers the time for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd ... 146th, 147th runner etc. The widgets are called 'tokens' and have the number of the place you finished in. So when you take the token to the scanner, they scan your personal barcode and then the token. So that logs "Ed Mandell finished 81st" for instance. Then later when it's all uploaded to the system, the timekeeper's time for 81st (say 26m:38s) is matched with your name. It's a nice little system.
