That transition from She's So Heavy to Here Comes The Sun is something where the intended experience is slightly lost on modern day streaming platforms. On the original vinyl, listening to "Heavy" droning on and on for so long only for it to abruptly end, gave you the impression that when you'd flip the vinyl over to continue the album, "Heavy" would just keep going on forever and ever. Instead you'd get greeted with the beautiful opening chords of Here Comes The Sun, almost like a song welcoming you out of the abyss "Heavy" was dragging you into.
I think this effect still works to an extent even on streaming, but learning about it like that made me understand why it's there.

Anthony, rare serious comment here. Can’t express how important these classic reviews are, as daunting as they may be for you. Been watching you for probably 10+ years now and some of my all time favorite classic albums I heard about from you back when I was like 14-15, (Low End Theory and In The Aeroplane were huge for me back in the day). Going back and singing the praises of these classics helps put it into the laps of younger people who might never have found it otherwise. Keep doing your thing ❤

Fun Fact: the cut on the end of She's So Heavy was actually John's idea, and it worked. And ALSO, it was the 'Last Song' they have ever recorded and written together, they never played again in the same room after that. People say that The End was the last song they written together, but it's actually She's So Heavy. My Favourite Song from The Beatles. Truly fantastic! @theneedledrop

    • @samuelalvarez9873

The End is the last they recorded together in a room though. If I'm correct, she's so heavy was the last time they were together to work on a song, a mixing session. The End is canonically known as the last song they recorded together in the same room.

“I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” was actually the first recorded for the album. They recorded it at Trident studios in February of 1969 with Billy Preston soon after their rooftop performance. They did however finish the song in August when John added the noise with the Moog synth.

"The End" is a perfect confluence of all of them reaching the pinnacle. The closing line "And in the end / The love you take / Is equal to the love you make" brilliantly encapsulates the overall theme of The Beatles' work: love. The harmony before the final notes show they were second to none when they were all on.
George Martin is THE fifth Beatle. Hands down. His impact on the group's sound cannot be overstated. He, Geoff Emerick, Phil McDonald, and Alan Parsons were at the top of their game for Abbey Road. The result is, as Fantano mentioned, the best produced Beatles album and one of the best produced albums of all time.

Hardly an original observation I'm sure, but the 'You Never Give me Your Money' reprise in 'Carry That Weight' is possibly my favourite moment from any piece of music. It’s honestly insane how much the Beatles changed in just a few short years. I think it’s ultimately what puts them above all other bands. Like it’s insane to think that the boy band singing catchy love songs became the same band who made Sgt Pepper’s, Revolver, Abbey Road, and Rubber Soul. So many rock bands just stick to the same formula with each album, whereas each Beatles album was like listening to an entirely different band. I think the only band that comes close is Radiohead.

“The End”’s guitar solos are actually traded off between 3 of the beatles (Paul-George-John repeated in the same order, 2 measures each, 3 times). If you listen closely, so much of each Beatle’s personality comes out in just these little licks, from Paul’s Bach-like second phrase to John’s thickly textured chord passages. You can even tell that the 2nd, 5th, and 8th licks are George’s by their virtuosity and impeccable technique (by this point in the band’s history George’s lead guitar skills had arguably far-surpassed the skills of the other Beatles). Thinking of the 3 of them trading off like that, I have so much more fun listening to the song as it sounds like a jam session between 3 friends, if those friends were some of the best melody composers/songwriters of their era. Then the way John’s final solo slams right into the bouncing piano chords for those final vocal harmonies, it’s just so perfect. You couldn’t ask for a better closing statement not only for the album but for the band.

Playing “the end” on The Beatles RockBand was so damn fun and you’re right. The guitar solos were performed by John, Paul, and George. They made that apparently clear for the visuals during that song as each member plays their own solo. I haven’t played the Beatles Rockband in well over a decade but I just remember how fun the shots of the camera panning from one guitarist to the other was during their respective solo. The best part was that you actually had to “earn” that song as it was only unlocked if you beat the “career” mode for the game. All other songs were readily available to play from the very start.

@@FlyleafOwO nah lol George and John swept the guitar solo section in “The End”. Then Paul. And the most iconic songs and #1 singles on Abbey Road are all John and George. It’s the Beatles not a competition and Abbey Road is most iconic because of John and George (I mean the only weak track on the album is Paul’s Maxwell’s and then you have “Oh Darlin’” vs. “Come Together”, “Something”, “I want you She’s so Heavy” and “Here comes the Sun”?! 7:53 I think part of the reason _Help!_ sounds so cohesive is the fact that John and Paul wrote most of the songs on it in a single night.
It was the tie-in soundtrack to a Beatles feature film (just like with _A Hard Day's Night_ from the year prior), and when John and Paul were given the request to write songs for the film, they both separately went home and came in the next day with a handful of songs each, then spent a couple days refining them all before putting them to tape in one 4-hour recording session.

Super glad you mentioned Hendrix’s lineage in metal. So many people gloss over the titan that was Hendrix when discussing the origins of the heavy metal, citing She’s So Heavy and Helter Skelter as the songs that “invented metal,” when in reality Jimi Hendrix had a much greater influence over the genre with songs like Manic Depression, If 6 was 9, Spanish Castle Magic, etc. which came out before those Beatles songs did. No disrespect to the Beatles because there is no understating their influence, but no metal guitarist looks at George Harrison in the same light as Jimi Hendrix.

Wonderful review, bro! You get the perfect balance of gravitas and irreverence dealing with this gem of the musical industry. I wish you did the same for Getz/Gilberto, which was the first jazz record to win the best album Grammy. A game changer in jazz and, needless to say, Brazilian industry.
    You're incredibly talented! Warm regards

The ‘shoop’ you describe on come together is actually the vocal ‘shoot me’. Also, there’s tonnes of videos on YT of Paul McCartney performing the Medley live.
The best love song of the past 100 years is obviously ‘You do something to me’ by Paul Weller.
