Do you kids (and adults) realize what a blessing this cat is to all of us? Rick is an amazing wealth of practical knowledge. Scary great player too. I think folks overlook his guitar skill. Even when he only plays a bar or two, they are "musical".
Thanks Rick! You offer great insight. This is valuable stuff.

Rick is old school musician. The kind that actually studies music and the complexities that it has. Not many around these days that truly understand music.

Couldn't have said it better. And I keep going back to that, if my teachers in school had his enthusiasm for their subjects, I'd have learned a heck of a lot more.

Watch more of his vids on scales and modalities. You'll start to pick up the feel each provides and that's the really important part.
Admittedly it must be nice to know the role a given note is playing, but as long as I think to hit them while playing, I can live with that.
BB King couldn't even tell you one chord from another. Never seemed to hurt his playing.

Terry Kath was a monster lost in a 7 piece horn band. He sang like Ray Charles and played like Jimi Hendrix.
You need to feature his playing since many don’t realize how great he was!!

He wasn't lost at all to those who cared to listen. It's an awful shame he passed before he formed Cook County. I think there'd be a much bigger conversation around him. Though many guitarists know 'Introduction' and 'Freeform Guitar' as pieces very well. He did make his mark. Eddie Van Halen was influenced by the latter. But I agree, I wish he was in conversations a lot more. He had a bigger splash that was due him.

On you tube is the entire Tanglewood Concert...When Terry starts in on his vocals for Color my World you can seem James Pankow in the background just smiling in awe and appreciation for Terry's voice...Terry Kath's guitar prowess is mostly understood if not somewhat underappreciated...but his voice is something that gets little discussion...off the charts sublime and soulful.

I wontbsaybhe was lost in Chicago with the horns..It is sensational.. Yh it isnt the guitar God status (for people not knowing his work well) ..But it is a different flavour.. I for one love Chicago's 70s stuff with all the horns.. Multiple singers.. Absolutely beautiful

Its cliche alright, still fun to play ,approachable, from the player and audience's perception, many eagles songs are great, great
hooks , melodies and stories. A buddy really likes King of Hollywood, that hook is from who knows where, like Hotel Calfornia lends itself to a great solo, simple, complicated and sort of unexpected

I was fortunate to have seen Terry with Chicago back in '76 when my mom took me to my first concert. My favorite part of the "Searchin" solo is the last note, when Terry slides up to the C on the 8th fret on the 6th string and bounces up and down the fretboard. Their current guitarist, Keith Howland, did a great job with this solo when I saw them live last year. Thanks, Rick, for continuing to deliver the great stuff!!!

You’ve touched on them within other videos, and it has never ceased to make me miss my father all the more.......because you play their music in a way that truly encapsulates what it is that makes this band absolutely phenomenal. Thank you for sharing your incredible artistic gift.

Great to hear a tribute to Terry Kath. My older brother had those early Chicago albums, and his solos (which get cut from the radio versions) have stayed with me ever since.
All of early Chicago’s lineup, the ambitiousness of their full album cuts, and the incredible funk and swing of their original sound, were world-class, but seem almost forgotten now.

It should be noted for the Kids who weren't around in 1976 when the song Hotel California by the Eagles came out. That Lovers of Hard Rock were shocked to hear such a song coming from The Eagles because it was way beyond what was thought capable of the Eagles who were more of a songwriting Folky Rock Band at the time. Yet, on the song Hotel California, Don Felder and Joe Walsh together laid down on one of the best lead guitar solos of the Classic Rock Era.

I’ve learned very few solos note for note-I’ll usually learn just a few beginning phrases (to fool the listener into thinking they’re hearing the recorded solo) then improvise the rest. But each one that I have learned has been very helpful in expanding my ear and adding to my improvisational vocabulary. Felder’s and Walsh’s solo on Hotel California is one of the solos I’ve learned and I’m very glad I did. One of the things enlightening to me was how many of the full-step country-style bends are incorporated. The same for Mark Knopfler’s solos and licks in Sultans of Swing, another tune which I learned everything-fills and solos-note for note. My jazz guitar coach, Mark Stefani, is real believer in transcribing and learning the classic solos of the greats. I know I should do more of this, but the press of constantly playing gigs is a barrier time-wise. But it always pays off. My most recent solo memorization project was Dicky Betts’ solo in Ramblin’ Man. Another eye-opener in that he was a genius at coming up with great licks using only the major pentatonic scale.
An interesting side note on the whole UA-cam take down issue: Don Felder used to have a couple of videos up where he taught both parts of the solo to Hotel California and *that* got taken down. …and he wrote the damn thing!

jazu True, but typically the listeners that aren’t fooled are musicians themselves, and they’re not going to mind that you’re improvising your own solo.

awesome. not only is the Peg solo a master class in melodic and target note phrasing and perfect overdriven tone but learning it is a great chops builder because of all the cool techniques Graydon crams into that 29 seconds of electric guitar perfection. I spent years working on it off and on. the other two excerpts also awesome. yes, kath was amazing. and really the best soul singer in the band.

I understand virtually nothing you say in these videos...yet I freaking love them! I did some amateur singing in rock and funk bands for a while, and was blown away by the couple of trained musicians in the those bands. We hand a 15 yr old guitarist / music theory student who didn't know a lot of classic rocks songs that were covered, so the bassist (also a killer player and trained in music theory) would tell him what key, tempo, how many measures to fill, and the kid would fill a solo in on his own - usually really good for winging it on the fly, at 15 no less . Then he'd come back the next week and play the solo darn near note for note... People would pay us a compliment like, "You're good musicians." and I'd tell them, "I'm just the idiot front man. THOSE are the musicians." :) Music - it's the great unifier. Wish I could have studied it as a kid.

When I learned the Hotel California I was so amazed by the phrasing, and have later come to analyze why it does it so well. It's not only the little blues tricks, but the way the solo jumps between minor and dorian, with harmonic minor notes mixed in. It also perfectly hits the notes of the chords in the background. Simply amazing.

I saw Chicago in 1971 and Terry Kath was great. Since then I had the chance to see Clapton Jeff Beck, Winter, Zappa, Metheny, Scofield, and to hear a lot of others greats, but Terry Kath always had a special place in my heart. He was a natural band leader, a great singer and a great player.I think he is very much underrated !

Rick, you should do a series on Terry Kath. He was such a massive guitarist. I've loved Chicago since I was a kid and they were all over the radio in the seventies. But I had to get older(and see some videos.....) to really appreciate what we lost in 1978. Keep up the good work, I learn something(even if I don't use it when I play guitar)every time I watch one of your videos.......so I keep coming back for more!

Beautiful! First, wow, it's easy to tell that you're a producer - the backing track and the solos are so great sounding!............ I have a random thought for you. I'm sure you're aware that there's a settings button on the video control area at the bottom of the videos here. There is a button for Speed. What if you recorded your video like normal, but then saved it at double-speed and published it. Then somewhere in your instructions you tell people to play it at half speed so it sounds normal. I wonder if that would trick the automated "copyright detecting crap"?

Fantastic video as always Rick. I was wondering if you have any plans on covering some Danny Gatton in the future? I feel like he's one of the great guitar players nobody talks about but his playing is so incredibly beautiful and complex mixing chords and licks in his soloing in the most interesting ways. Just a quick listen to Sleepwalk on youtube will blow most guitar players minds!
Thanks and looking forward to your next video!

I believe Danny Gatton won awards for his prowess on the guitar , in Jazz , Country and Rock ? The record labels didn't now where to put him. The stick he did playing slide with a full open beer bottle, soaking the guitar then playing over, under and around it with a towel was Phenomenal . One of the Best, hands down..
