    Are you ready to level up your credit card rewards game?
    I sure am!
    BUT…
    I’m even more eager to SIMPLIFY my strategy. For too long, I’ve been using 5-8 cards on a routine basis, but something tells me the added value of doing so may not be that much greater than using 3-4 cards.
    So, from cashback to travel points, I’ll break down the strategies that could help you earn more while spending wisely (and WITHOUT getting overwhelmed).
    Choosing the right credit card setup is crucial for optimizing your rewards, but it's not just about the points or cashback percentages. Although I’ll be focusing ONLY on the rewards earning potential for each credit card setup, always keep in mind the importance of considering annual fees, the value of statement credits, and other benefits that each card offers. After all, what good is a high rewards rate if it's outweighed by hefty annual fees? The reason why I’m excluding them from our discussion in the video is because nearly everyone values benefits differently (some of which may allow you to completely justify the annual fees), and some of those benefits (including statement credits) may go totally unused some years or every year (that’s my case with the Amex Platinum Card and Chase Sapphire Preferred, for instance).
    Whether you're a seasoned points collector or just starting to dip your toes into the world of credit card rewards, this video has something for everyone. Join me as I navigate the intricacies of maximizing your credit card rewards and help you make informed decisions about your financial strategy.
    That said, it's essential to acknowledge the hassle factor that comes with managing multiple cards. From remembering payment due dates to tracking spending across various accounts, juggling multiple cards isn't for everyone. If that sounds like you, I’ve got some good news: Using a single credit card (or up to 2) can STILL be highly rewarding!

    What this tells me is, Chase needs a 2% card and Amex is overrated.

    • @MattMcGrathOfficial
      @MattMcGrathOfficial 2 місяці тому +2

      Chase is starting to fall behind a bit, especially with their two Sapphire cards. A revamp should be in the works.
      Their saving grace with me is the elevated 5x on gas and groceries the first year with the CFU SUB I got and their ink cards.
      Plus Chase still dominates the travel partner game.

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  2 місяці тому +5

      If Chase launched a 2% card, then I'd doubt it would be eligible for the 25% - 50% value boost in travel via the portal when combined with the CSP, CSR, or CIBP.

I think the customer service piece can be huge, as well as "out of portal" earnings capability.

I've been in simplicity mode with my CC setup for a while now, and my Venture X alongside my Bilt for rent points has been a very effective combo. Excellent video Mark. Nothing like it so far on UA-cam. Really puts a unique perspective on high reward setups.
    Surprised to see Citi do so well, but I’m realizing they are a sleeper with only a $95 annual fee entry for a trifecta.
    Is it true that once you move points from a Custom Cash or Double Cash to the Premier they have an expiration date? Would be a negative if true.
    Also the power of the Venture X alone is interesting to see. I do find myself often turning to it for most of my non category purchases.

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  2 місяці тому +1

    Way too many wacky assumptions made here (without stating) for this to make sense. For example, why would you convert Savor points to miles, then cash them in for half value?

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  2 місяці тому +3

      Because you cannot use the 2X earnings from the Venture X to become 2% as part of a cash back setup.
      For anyone who thought "2X on everything" from a Venture card would be good for a cash back setup, I wanted to illustrate how it's actually a terrible choice.
      The Capital One Duo that so many people talk about as an incredible setup is only good for people who like to travel.
      Additionally, you can only transfer rewards in 1 direction with Capital One. That is, from cash back into miles. You cannot do miles into cash back.
      That said, a better Capital One Duo for cash back would be the SavorOne + Quicksilver.

    • @robertjarrell7276
      @robertjarrell7276 2 місяці тому +1

      @@MarkReese No, I wouldn’t want to accumulate more in CO miles on the V1 than I wanted to use at 1 cent per point as a purchase eraser for travel. But the Savor One is obviously good for cash back. Why not the Savor One/Quicksilver combo? And no one who doesn’t travel at all should have the V1 in the first place.

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  2 місяці тому +3

      @@robertjarrell7276 - I mentioned the SavorOne + Quicksilver in my previous reply and agree that would've been better.
      There are hundreds / thousands of possibilities to run through a test like this one.

    Interesting! I loved this breakdown. I have one question, though: If you were doing a pure cash-back approach, why did you stick to cards from the same issuers? I understand that it makes for a good comparison to travel, since in travel terms they kind of have to work together. But for cash back, you could have had the Costco card as a 1-and-done card. Or you could have had the Custom Cash, Active Cash/Double Cash, SavorOne, Autograph, etc. I'm curious what things would have looked like with that. Also, the new Robinhood card at 3% on everything could change things up!

    • @MarkReese

      Mainly for 2 reasons:
      1. To illustrate the trifectas that so many people talk about.
      2. For simplicity of card management. I also did these tests for myself as I'm looking for a way to simplify every aspect of my card setup. One major pain point I have is using cards across different issuers, each of which requires separate accounts / logins to manage and separate rewards programs.
      The purpose of the video, however, isn't to advocate for any particular setup. Rather, it shows the thought process people should go through with their own spend and the cards that interest them 👍

    Ok so maybe I missed something here, but on the 1 card setup cash part, the highest return was $860.12. Using your spend against a 2% flat cash back card, the return is $1077.26. So it seems like the flat 2% is a winner in a pure cash back single card scenario. Even with a 2 card setup. It wasn’t until you got to 3 cards that it passed the 2% and even there, it wasn’t by much. The Alliant CC would net you $1347, and the new RH Gold Card would net you $1616. You couldn’t even hit that with a 4 card setup and all that extra work to manage it (and even deducting the $60 “annual fee”). I think that should be a key takeaway in itself.

    • @TechYodaSV
      @TechYodaSV 2 місяці тому +1

      Even on the travel side, if you deduct the AF from the cash equivalent value, only the Citi stack beats it and by $500…for all that work. Thank you for doing this experiment. There are so many permutations and combinations you could have done here, but you (and us viewers) would end up with analysis paralysis if you took it to the logical conclusion. As a fellow content creator in the finance space (this is a sock account, not the one I create from) I know how challenging it is to approach this space from a quantitive perspective. I can't over state how glad I am that you did this experiment and presented the data in this manner. I think that most of us credit card "enthusiasts" get caught up in the "game" or the hobby, but we don't really present things from what I would consider the "30k foot view" - the fact is that there is a cost in terms of time and sanity to min/max this hobby. I have been doing the CC game for well over a decade and a half at this point, and where I am at in my life, I just don't have the time or energy to pursue it like I used to. I've also reached the point where time is my most valuable asset, so everything I do is based on whether or not I am "buying time" or not. Time is the one thing I cannot make/buy more of, so that really matters to me. Your experiment was awesome and I love your content in general. Agree and moreover, the RH Gold Card fee is $50 per year (not $60) if you shift to an annual membership instead of a $5 monthly fee. Notably, the RH Gold card has no foreign transaction fees whereas all of the cash back cards outlined in Marc's (great!) presentation have around a 3% foreign transaction fee, except for the Savor One. If you were to account for the foreign transaction fees, both the Capital One Cash set-ups and the RH Gold Card would will yield even a bigger advantage versus the other cash set-ups.
