JON BOAT to SALTWATER SKIFF Build Walkthrough | 212hrs of Work
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 вер 2024
- In May of 2019 I bought my first boat. It was great and worked, but I always wanted to tweak it some. So in February 2021 when I got hurt surfing, I dove into remodeling my Jon Boat into a custom saltwater skiff. It took me 212hrs to finish it, and in this video I break down the entire build, including a time lapse of the whole process.
I couldn't be more stoked to be back on the water, on something I created myself. I hope you enjoy!

The Boat Build that inspired my setup! ua-cam.com/video/bH-FGdgFGdg/v-deo.html
Go Follow Anthony Jones for some epic Jon Boat build outs.
How long was that boat
I appreciate that this project because you're excited about doing something new that you didn't know how to do. Yeah, you made some mistakes, but it feels like the spirit of UA-cam DIY.
I’ve watched a ton of Jon boat rebuild videos and like 50% of the people say they owe everything to Anthony Jones haha. The other 50 prob do too but they don’t say it. Guy has some incredible videos. Gives up all the info and his story is really inspiring.
I know boats minimally, but this was a killer build breakdown. Super authentic, as well.
Thanks!
Perfect inshore red, spec and flounder setup. All you need brother. well done!
Awesome build. Nicest 14 foot Jon boat I’ve seen. Can’t wait to see some fishing action out of it
Man I wish you lived closer! Your attitude is exactly the kind of person I’d love to be friends with haha.
Building out my own job/skiff flats boat now
U did good. The paint needed self etching primer for aluminum before paint. I had the same issue and learned the hardway lol
Great built - inspiring for my current boat improvement for salt water....
Plus, it is really hard to get square hatches to seal. If you want watertight hatches on a little boat like that, look into Valley Canoe Products rubber hatches and rims. Sea kayak hatches.
This is something I must consider building (or having built). As a larger guy with bad knees kayaks just aren't something I am fond of. The Kaku Zulu Hybrid was on my short list. But this would be exactly what I want for mangrove fishing and transport to and from my saltwater wade fishing spots. I have 1236 jon in the back that could use an upgrade.
I gotta say that is a very in depth build. Especially for a first boat build. Great job
Great project, it's almost as much fun building it as it is using it.
Very cool! Finally found a Gheenoe up in DE and trying to figure out my layout. Catch em up, pretty work 👍
sanding is so brutal. such a cool project!
Make sure your front navigation lights (Red & Green) can be seen from the sides and the front to be Coast Guard approved, nice build
Now you need to add the Poling Platform to that skiff. Sweet job you had done on this vessel.
2022 👀
I have had a tin skiff for years got a up grade to a slightly bigger fiberglass skiff and motor this year. I fish a lot of skinny water and have a lot of success
Complètement fou ! Merci pour ton partage ✌🤩🙌
I'm really impressed! Thanks so much for making this video. I'm inspired.
that was HEAVY!!!! anyone that has ever worked with those or similar products ie paints epoxy caulking etc or materials like the wiring, hatches, latches, gaskets etc, whether for automotive or marine, can appreciate this. awesome job Brett! be safe on the water and go fishing!!!!! yew
Thanks!! Means a lot :)
excellent build out and video explaining it!
Fantastic job Brett!
Anthony is a total craftsman and im grateful for him sharing his wisdom so freely 😎 totally dig his method and flow.
I have my projects ahead of me, sooo hard to not be fishing, or surftramping,i gotta find that balance.
Great video and awesome job one more time!
Blessings and aloha from Michigan
The sitting and staring is for real.
Su h a rad set up!
Turned out awesome 👍 nice job
"Sprained ankle" 😉👍
Awesome man, great work! Anthony Jones is the man.
Strong work bro. That's awesome.
Watched from start to finish.Finished product is awesome! Well done man!!👏👏🤙
Appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed :)
Preparation is everything, other than that great job.
Thanks for sharing the build!
I found you from Anthony’s page. I have a similar boat to yours and have been planning to make it a skiff to for the Texas Coast.
Heading down to OBX in a few days and can't wait! My husband just spent the last 4/5 months doing the same thing to his 14/44 Jon Boat! Wow, wish I could show you the comparison of both yours and his. Maybe you will see us out on the water, weather permitted!
Sweet build I got a 1542 for backcountry and wish I could do a build that well really sweet.
The tracker grizzlies are basically sprayed in Bed liner instead of carpet which I think is pretty cool instead of carpet
Hey Brett , nice job on building a working mans bass boat, most of us are not rich guys, but we still wanna fish like were in a $50.000 Ranger, Guys like you, Anthony Jones and the Tiny Boat guy from Arizona make that possible for us, I'm currently building a Tin Can rig too and I learned a lot from your video , again good job & fish on Buddy !!!
Really nice job. Super cool to watch the whole process
Sherwin-Williams KEM 400 paint worked great on my duck hunting boat and has held up great, most large Jon boat builders use it.
thanks for the heads up! I'll prolly repaint this winter, so good to know.
I like it. That is the same setup that I want.
looks amazing man definitely helped me get some ideas for my boat.
Just subscribed, I love my John Boat!
Great video! Awesome Boat!
Great video! Hopefully I’ll be able to build out a Jon boat like that soon
Looks amazing. great job.
You can make your oilbased paint dry fast with catalyst hardner and Even accelerated with japan dry.
I used to paint cars for a living. Your paint failed not because of the paint but because you have to use a direct to metal primer designed for aluminum first. We found that out in the mid 2000's when ford started putting aluminum hoods on trucks and the paint pealed triggering a factory recall. Every bodyshop in town was full up with trucks that needed the hoods fully stripped and repainted. What did we learn? You need a specific primer to go on bare aluminum. Hope that helps!
so I used direct to metal aluminum paint... but I think in hindsight now examining it post-paint peel years later... I don't think I sanded it at all, or well enough at the very least. the guy who I copied from had great success... so for sure user error on my end. not the paint.
Outstanding.. Very good work.. Tiny boat nation. Great motivation. Name your boat.. And spray paint the bottom of it black. Use some real Paint. Maybe some Rhino Paint. or flex Seal..
Great Job Brother!!!
So fun🤙🤙🌊.. Waching FROM SARDINIA island
Wow thank you!
It’s a Jiff!
Watching the progress throughout the past months on this has been awesome, great project, the final product is great👍🏻
I wouldn’t bring it up but I went through this on a kayak build and it is for your own safety. The navigation lights are supposed to be seen from straight ahead to 112* aft on either side of the boat. I’ve been so close to getting run over in my kayak in broad daylight. It’s exponentially harder to see smaller craft at night with a bow that is not properly on plane.
Ya the lights were mostly for show and for safety. But around here the places I launch and fish at night, there’s no normal boat traffic. Heck I’ve only ever seen 1 boat when I’ve been out at night. If I was on a busy waterway I’d have rigged em better
Good shit 👍🤗
I think it's awesome, hell of a cool project 😎✌️
Brett boat!♥️
What a great build. Congrats!
Good job man
good job.....enjoy!
check out the Dargels and Shallow sports outa Texas, super interesting hull design could be modified for back water Hatteras areas.....you could be that guy for a market of boat builders in a niche I've been interested in for along time
If you ever paint the outside again, go to South Florida Fishing Channel and do exactly what he did on his skiff for painting. You will be happy you did.
thanks
How do you not name a boat? Good video btw
Looking to start my own project Jon boat for saltwater in SC. How’s the wood holding up after a few seasons?
Nice work nice video
Congrats
Looks like you didn't use a type of etching such as self etching primer or a chemical etching washdown, still a great build tho
I used aluminum boat specific paint that required only sanding, no primer.
I figure I used the wrong grit sandpaper… but it’s only coming off in some spots not all. It’s ok. And thanks! Happy with how it came out
Do you know how much weight was added to boat? Love the build and the story. Especially the retrospect and how it relates to the design and how you would do it differently if you had to do it again.
I did not weigh it... but when I took it back on the water, I didnt lose even 1mph compared to before the build. In saying that, I'm positive it is a bit heavier, just not enough to matter too much.
What size of hull is this? It looks about perfect!
Nvm… I went back to the beginning. It’s a 1436 Tracker Topper.
Ummm no name!? Slap a lifeonwater sticker on it 🙂
This was definitely a labor of love project- it turned out awesome
So how much to buy new seats or upholstery them?
Btw love the starry night like artwork in the background…who did it?
Hugs R&B
uncles said he met ya surfing in obx a couple years ago
Self etching primer
The brand of paint was 4200.?Any more information on it? In some cases, water will help the paint cure. It sounds odd, but it has happened even in the shipyards in Seattle, WA.
turned out bad ass bro go catch some fish
Ótimo projeto.
Ficou muito bom.
Parabéns!
Quais as medidas dele??
6:00 is it because you forgot to primer the underbody first? Great job on the build, Brett!
It was paint/primer. Instructions said that no separate primer needed if used over old good paint or on bare aluminum.
@@brettbarley oh, gotcha. Such a fun project, I'd love to do it too
Epic setup Brett! Two questions if ya don't mind.
1. The front deck looks kinda small, do you ever wish it was a bit bigger?
2. Looks like a good amount of effort went into the lights. Is the night fishing there solid enough to make effort worth your while?
it's plenty fine... if I wasn't trying to fit my whole family on the boat, I'd definitely have made it bigger. but comfort wise for all of us, it made more sense to keep it small.
the night fishing here is phenomenal for bait fishing... not artificial though. I went WAY in depth on the light setups, even though I'll hardly use them. but I wanted to have them, for those nights we do go out. it was more to do it for fun, than for need.
really liked watching the boat build. what about a Bimini canopy! or is the boat too short?
Too small of a craft. It’d be in the way
Must be heavy as hell with all that wood.
No, that’s why I used thinner plywood and all regular pine. The salt treated wood before, being waterlogged, had the boat nearly the same weight as it is now. It is heavier than it was, but not by much. Boat goes same speed as it did prior to the build.
What did you mount the wood to the boat with
how much money did you spend on this build? I have the same boat. and need to travel same road you did.
👍🤙
Awesome, what size motor yoy running?
9.8hp Tohatsu
What a awesome buld
Did you buy or made that trout decoration?
Didn’t make it. It’s from Sea-Dek
Awesome job!! I’m in the process of a similar build on a fiberglass 16’ tri-hull, for inshore saltwater fishing. I’ve thought about filming the process but I don’t feel like hearing all the keyboard warriors opinions on it.
My biggest concern is taking a wave over the bow and suddenly being in a pickle. Do you think that’s a concern in boats like this that are not self-bailing?
I mean… 14’ Jon boats aren’t meant for ocean action. All boats have limits… sticking to fishing within their limits is always key.
I get hes super ocd.. but he shoudlve just bought a better boat to start with.. like after all this id still rather have a bare skiff thats more suitable for a bit of chop.. and low water levels..yes it would cost a bit more.. like 5k more... but also 212 hours of lost fishing time.. thats about the fishing time i get in 2 years...
Nice build! What part of NC are you fishing?
Thanks! I’m in Cape Hatteras
@@brettbarley Awesome, I'm down in Wayne county. Hatteras some good time fishing. I finished building a flat bottom skiff last year and hope to get it on the water this spring if I can find a trailer for it. Maybe I'll see ya out on the water.
NAME IT JON
What length Jon boat is this?
Its the Gnarly Barley 3000
What size is your boat ?
Welp I know what I'm working for now
Fucking awesome
your red green nav lights are not approved need to have them go around the corner to be approved. 112.5 degree view on red and green.
I don’t see any videos of you fishing in it 😔
How do you attach the deck framing to the boat?
Stainless steel machine screws. I didn’t scree the flooring in, just layed it in the bottom. Only screwed framing to the seats
@@brettbarley how about the front deck area supports that come down where there isn’t a seat area? I’m thinking of doing a similar idea with my 1240. I don’t want to deck from the front all the way to the middle bench. I want to leave an area for the wife’s feet.
@@patrickfearon7942 I brought 2 supports down over where one of the ribs in the boat is, and used brackets to attache them to the ribs. that main support that runs over them is also bolted from the outside of the hull by the rail.
@@patrickfearon7942 ua-cam.com/video/X2Ss2DCbTzY/v-deo.html check out this video by Anthony Jones, starting at 3min 56sec
I basically copied what he did, as far as structurally goes.
@@brettbarley thank you so much. I’m as green as can be with this. I live in South Florida and have always had offshore boats. This is my first fresh water canal use boat. Brand new Lowe 1240 that I plan on putting a 9.9hp on. Would you get your motor again if you did it all over?
Why didnt you paint the trailer wheels they seriosely need help!
A skiff has a pointed bow by definition. Yours is still a jon boat.
tell that to Carolina Skiff...
I have been looking at several Johnboat fishing boats for this exact same reason.
I want to hit up salt for 90% of the time and then squeeze up into the cypress trees near my home the other 10%. Bouncing off of stumps. Chasing crappie up in the cypress flats in the Spring.
How does the aluminum hold up to salt long term?
The "Lowe Roughneck 1760 Pathfinder" is one of the boats I am looking HARD at. For $20.5k it comes with a Center console, tunnel drive, 19gal fuel cap, etc. Not bad! The motor is super mounted high already so no need for a jack plate. I can get galvanized trailers with Lowe boats as well as an option.
www.loweboats.com/hunt-fish/roughneck/center-console/roughneck-1760-pathfinder.html
Aluminum is fine is alt water. No corrosion anywhere.
@@brettbarley
OK. Thank you. That was the only thing holding me back really.
I will just keep up with the cleaning afterwards and adding protection from time to time.
