$30 Casio = 600ft Under Water?!

  • Casio A158WA is rated for 30 Meter water resistance, but it can do much more than that. Today we test out the theory of water resistance and what it means. Is it just splash proof or is it more than that?
Thanks to ISO 22810 that is on all modern watches, 30M really means 30M unless the gaskets degrade over time. This Casio took a heck of a lot more than that to finally break.

As a note: ISO22810 is the spec all watches have to meet. Dress watches up to dive watches. It’s designed to address ambiguity of water resistance in ‘watches, so yes, your watch meets those specific depths. Obviously most of us aren’t comfortable trying it, but they are. 🎉

There are, of course, many watches that aren’t water resistant, or aren’t tested to the ISO spec, but may have some resistance anyway despite not being labeled as such.

The ONLY, and I mean literally, the only watches that ever survive the roughest surf conditions are Casio watches. They are unkillable. Safe pressure rating on the vintage 30m Casios is definitely deeper than what's stated, and i don't think most other brands have that same degree of reliability. It's as if Casio deliberately overbuilt the resistance. However, i've always thought that digital quartz are inherently more robust; i'm curious as to how analogs like MQ-24 and MTP-1095 (a dress watch) can hold against pressure.

The only reason I don't wear it diving anymore is because I had a crazy elevator door in Malaysia, close on my wrist watch and it ripped one of the holes holding the strap spring bar. It could pop out at any time and fall of my wrist now. Best watch I had ever owned.

  • @nojburns

I believe the watch stopped beeping because you took off the case back. There is a very thin speaker on the inside of Casio case backs. This is electrified by a small spring that comes out of the movement and connects to the speaker. If the spring is still in the movement (they're very easy to lose) and you put the case back back on, I'm certain the speaker would continue to produce your beep.

I don t think that every push of the lever equals to 2m as being a constant in this experiment. It may be that with the rising preassure, every lever push would provide less and less additional preassure as the air density inside the glass chamber rises. You should have used an actual gage with sufficient measuring capabilities for your experiment. On the other hand is clear that the little Casio behaved admirably and got well beyond its rating. But i don t think the high depth numbers are accurate in this experiment, unfortunately. I m 90% sure that the rate of preasure increasing per one lever pull is not a constant variable. Good luck!

Give the LCD a bit of heat with a lighter so the lcd layers can separate again, should work fine after that.

Swiss brands 30m WR is literally splash proof. But from your video, Casio 30m WR is truly 30m or more water proof. No wonder I can wear my F91W for 30min laps swimming regularly & wondering why it still functions.

That’s not my experience at all, my Casio stopped working after some light snorkeling - at most 3-4 meter. But that was 10 years ago, maybe they are better now or I had a bad example back then. I would recommend a G-Shock anyway if you’re planning on getting it wet.
