Thame or Thang means open ground Me means lower ཐང་སྨད་ Thang Toe ཐང་སྟོད་ Toe means upper. Thang toe and Thangme are 2 largest villages in the area, sparsely populated. Over 10000 Tibetan refugees crossed this Thame village & temporarily settled along the way to Salary district. My family stayed in Thame for a year in 1960. This place is known as Khumbu valley & natives are known as Khumpa. Khumpa people speak vernacular language (similar to Tibetan) ཁུམ་སྐད་་ They are friendly and hard working people. They have unique and rich culture. That time, there were public open space where hundreds of tents pitched by the refugees. Recent flash flood devastated the open space called Pachung where my family stayed. I was saddened by this terrible news and hope the people will over come this difficult time.
