My father died last week. While I was sitting at his side during the last hours, I was using my mindfulness practice to "stay in the moment" and "be present". I think that if I hadn't known how to do that or *why* I should do that, I would have disconnected from the experience and withdrawn into myself. But instead I was able to be present for my family. I also think the whole process left me with a lot less trauma than would have otherwise been the case, since I didn't have regrets or second thoughts afterwards. I have felt no need to re-examine the event in my thoughts, because I examined it while living it. It doesn't make it easier in the moment, but mindfulness at least allows you to not lose yourself in those moments.

I could listen to Sam have these solo talks forever. There’s a level of clarity in his diction that is hard to find elsewhere. It’s not that he’s using big words. It’s that his choices of words are so sharp, the meaning of what he is saying comes to in full clarity.

    • @Bradley_UA
      @Bradley_UA 2 роки тому +1

@Mike Kane I mean... Theres still objective difference between whatever we call "you" and whatever we call "universe". As a matter of first person experience I am whatever I am experiencing which is the universe. But the image that I have in my consciousness is t the real universe. In physical terms I'm trapped inside my.own brain, never to leave it. And what Allan what's says about "we are the universe" is the first person statement it has nothing to do with physical universe or chemicals. It may make you feel more.united with the universe, but to do that is to miss the point of breaking the illusion of "self".
It's the same way as trying to come up with a way to think of a turd being "the universe". Sure it's part of the universe, but if you're just going to say that that's what it means to be the universe, then you completely missed the whole point of literally.everything Sam Harris and others are saying about the feeling that you call "I" and why it's a good idea to understand it.

I understand the fundamental tenant of stoicism to be that one can always make their situation better when faced with challenges. If you absolutely cannot figure out a way suicide is an option. The app has taught me not to be afraid of imperanence, but rather to recognize the incredible freedom that comes with the transistory nature of experience. We think of thoughts (especially the negative ones) as having a type of superpower that has the potential to ruin our day, only to realise that once we pay sufficent attention to their nature, their structure is inherently superficial.

Nice talk. Always appreciate Sam's content. Many great minds came across the difference between the concept of a thing and the actual thing whether scientists, philosophers, artists or whatever. The painting the Treachery of Images with the famous "this is not a pipe" quote, while also Richard Feynman, Alan Watts, Terence Mckenna are just a few examples.
    Richard Feynman:
"I learned very early the difference between knowing the name of something and knowing something"
Terence McKenna with his magnificent eloquent style:
"Culture replaces authentic feeling with words. As an example of this, imagine an infant lying in its cradle, and the window is open, and into the room comes something, marvelous, mysterious, glittering, shedding light of many colors, movement, sound, a transformative hierophany of integrated perception and the child is enthralled and then the mother comes into the room and she says to the child, “that’s a bird, baby, that’s a bird,” instantly the complex wave of the angel peacock iridescent trans-formative mystery is collapsed, into the word. All mystery is gone, the child learns this is a bird, this is a bird, and by the time we’re five or six years old all the mystery of reality has been carefully tiled over with words. This is a bird, this is a house, this is the sky, and we seal ourselves in within a linguistic shell of dis-empowered perception. "

We have become too accustomed to automation. Meditation is a direct decision to interface with consciousness. When we are doing a task and we get in the zone, we are able to glimpse that realm of consciousness for a brief moment, however meditation is the only way that I know of where one can truly observe in a direct manner the mystery of consciousness. What a gift to become present, and wake up. Thank you Sam for all your valuable insights.

Meditation hopefully will set them back on the right track and once again makes them focus on the more important questions rather than engage in conflict of the current events. This will benefit not only themselves but the people that look to them for guidance.

Dear Mr. Harris, I am so thrilled to have learned that what I experienced as a child and continued to play with throughout adulthood is shared with humans. I have spoken to a handful of other people throughout my life who expressed surprise and concern about what is called by Mr Harding the headless way.. Some even advised me not to continue invoking it out of the fear for my sanity.
I have to say that I particularly liked the fact that you described it as a fleeting few second state that is hard to maintain. However the way I arrived at it when I was about 6 or 7 yeas old was by trying to imagine the concept of infinity of the universe in the physical sense. This experience was in fact scary the first few times as I would struggle to find self and would immediately cling to some worldly objects to bring 'me' back. But then I mustered up more courage and stayed with it longer.
I just started listening to the waking up app a few days ago and am marveling at the various descriptions of this experience by you and Douglas Harding. Being as impatient as I am, I'm eager to see what's next and how this state can be helpful for the psyche. But having discovered it on my own, I also would like to leave this for 'me' to discover... I am divided. Please advise.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom in the app, podcast and here on youtube. These are simply gems!

The first half of this talk reminds of Derrida's work in 'Of Grammatology'. Words like blue, red, roses, etc invoke in us a concept of the thing we are describing. Concepts can be far away from the actual meaning of the thing we are describing. This is where Derrida originally brought in the idea of a post structuralist interpretation unique to all things & individuals.
Sam talking about our inability to hint at the word 'blue' beyond the thoughts of it's perception & physical charecteristics is an important reminder of the illusion that the meaning of a word has. The word's origin in the structure of reality and at the same time making that truth part of that structure seem directly present to the mind are somehow nearly impossible to convey!

Nice one. I was saying 20 years ago that it took billions of years for us to get here-including the non-biological evolutions of the universe in the count up to the here and now. I also heard myself say and write in my diaries that we were a conscious part of the universe years before I heard anyone else or was made aware of anyone else saying it; I am not saying I said these things first-but it’s great to know one can come up with these notions (or realize them) on our own. What’s also great is I just posted an essay on Facebook-rather than at my Medium or Wordpress accounts-quite bluntly explaining that my fellow Americans need to find a source of inner peace inside themselves-for calm, focus and cultivation of the mind-rather than seeking theisms outside the mind, outside the self. Yes-that distinction needs to made when some societies are turning themselves inside out to rush backward toward earlier stages of social construction.
Thanks, Sam; it’s good to know we share the same epoch. We need more people to share these gems-rather than keep them to themselves.

I was thinking about this last year but this video finally put it into words... our approach to the world is to break things down and name them, and giving names to things makes us feel in control, and it works to give us some control over the material aspects of existence for sure...but in the end we still don't really know what anything is.

    Beautifully done Sam !!
The essence of our being is indeed a mystery. Just “being”
In the the present moment is indeed a challenge but with the mastery of mind, body & spirit, what a place of Nirvana it truly is. Thank you for all you do to enrich
This experience for myself & others .. Namaste ☯️

One thing I always found interesting is the sensation of your body separate from visual or spatial context. So, take your hand and feel your fingers pressing and rubbing your palm. Now close your eyes and try to find where that physical sensation is in your awareness. Is it obviously on your right or left side? Is it in your center. Can you isolate it and feel sensation that isn’t on one side or the other?

My choice of meditation is Transcendental Meditation. I've found other meditations - midfulness, Zen, counting breaths or whatever are so boring to do, take quite a bit of effort that I end up ending the practice. Transcendental Meditation is pleasant to do, take no effort, isn't about stopping thoughts or using will power or discipline in any way.
I think we force ourselves to go to work, get up, work hard, make the grade, do this, do that. I like a meditation that steps outside of that forceful arena, doesn't try and get you somewhere. From the day you start you are as good at it as you will ever be. No working towards a goal, trying hard to be better.

Sam, this is truly of great import, and while I have heard of your history with meditation, you sound like a great teacher might sound- and soothing, almost hypnotic voice. I'll get the app and experiment a bit.
My formerly enjoyed creativity has gone on an extensive hiatus, so I could use the direction towards reintegrating (perhaps understanding its departure?) whatever needs to be acknowledged, owned, and potentially lived.
    A prayer, that last statement.
Bless each of you on your respective journeys.
