It is not ironic if it's true. The whole issue is loaded with religion from both sides but very very obviously from the Palestinian side. I used to be impressed by Sam Harris! Hell, he even helped in me leaving Islam. HOWEVER, with age and more nuance acquired, I realized I almost started hating my own people by just listening to Sam Harris even though I could clearly see that they were definitely not what Sam Harris says. The more history I read, the more details I got, the more I could see that the only parts where the muslim world sees extremism and radicalism are the countries where the US, C.I-A have completely infiltrated the opposition. We know now, even Hillary Clinton admitted "We funded the wrong people" as she says. Sam Harris completely ignores that. The decades-long b0mbing of poor african, middle-eastern countries, the funding of T3rror groups. All of that is done by NATO and their Secret services. There is no bigger fan of Sam Harris that I am. I have read all of his books. And I know how he constantly rags on the belief structure of Islam and...hence...the rationale for Hamas' violence....dying for Allah, etc etc. Has he never read the words of the radical Jews and their "right" to "sacred" Israel? Why is Israel so sacred and their belief for 'specialness' any more important than Arab's beliefs that Allah is the 'only' God. Excuse me???? Religion is THE motivation for the killing on both side.... not just on the Arabs' side.

I am a huge fan of Sam too and I am afraid you didn't understand his point. He doesn't advocate any religion (You should know it from his books). What he is saying is that only Islam produces large amount of extremists. There's certain extant of hatred in any religion but only in Islam this extant is big enough to produce extremists like teen age suicide bombers in decent quantities and on the regular basis.
That totally misses his point about how Islam disproportionately has extremists and that Jews are disproportionately secular.

I think the motivation for killing on the Israel side is a desire to destroy a terrorist organization that just murdered and raped and kidnapped your civilians. I don’t think it is religious. There are certainly some Israelites for whom this is true and there are right wing politicians in Israel who use religious rhetoric to impassion those right wingers who are susceptible to it, but at the end of the day to call the retaliation religious just isn’t right.
It would be like calling American’s response to 9/11 a “crusade.” There were right wing politicians who used God talk about the issue but at the end of the day it was a retaliatory strike that wasn’t motivated by Christian doctrine.
You could argue Hamas’ attack had an element of retaliation in it because of the settlement expansions and West Bank occupation but Hamas really is an explicitly religious organization that doesn’t even come within 1 million miles of the US or Israeli government in terms of its degree of secularism. The deliberate torture, rape, and kidnapping of civilians that Hamas engaged in is straight up religious barbarism.

Sam's contention that radicalization isn't connected to real world events/atrocities is absurd. This is a prime example of how his own thinking (at least in some areas) just isn't connected to real world reality.
He also talks about this but also points out the level severity is different in this respect.
Islam is inherently a radical religion. It's failed to go through a period of enlightenment, hence it's still stuck following Muhammad's barbarism of the 7th century.
It may be a motivating factor, but radical Islamism and its ideals transcend these grievences, and many radicals have said as much about their motivations.

Actions reflect intentions and if Israel isn't even setting foot on Gaza for decades how can anyone credibly argue that Hamas had a plausible reason to attack? This stems back to islamic fundamentalism in that Hamas really does believe in martyrdom and retaking all the land that is Israel today.

Sam Harris is extremist is his own right for his ideals and ideology of hate of other faith like Muslim or Islam. His extremist views breed and helps and support those religious fantics and extremists also. So basically, they both are two sides of the same coin. Not sure why Perice Morgan would invite these lot to his platform (unless he support their views) and then create hate and divisions amongst fellow humans.
People like Sam and Douglas should be give a land where they and their fellow religious extremist fight amongst themselves and let us all civilised people live in peace and harmony without a hate. I have the opposite perspective. My respect for Sam has significantly increased over the years. Sam has a wise and in depth understanding of the conflict. And he has a true gift for explaining the situation in the clearest terms.

Sam is probably one of the most educated and unbiased experts on this subject. His last book was co-written with a Muslim. If you question anything he’s saying, just watch some videos on the UNRWA schools, where you can see these 6 year old striving-to-be-martyrs yourself. Or just read the Hadiths. There was a cease fire on October 6th. Radical Islam does not want peace. They are holding hostages and continue to fight. They vow to do it again. They do not want a 2-state solution, they want Israel dead and gone.

No. Criticism of Harris made in good faith. His view on the middle east is extremely shortsighted and ahistorical. He talks in generalities and thought experiments without getting into the real world historial and political context that is needed to understand situations like this. Certainly Islamic fundamentalism is bad, as is Jewish fundamentalism, but Sam's boiler plate "Islam is bad" answer does nothing.
