This singer is a uniquely divine creation. As if her very name was meant to assist in the nature of her voice called a dramatic soprano. Jessye Norman! There is power and wonder in that name. I am glad that teh forces of universe/the galaxy chose Jessye Norman!I say to those who would even think of destructive criticism pertinent t Ms. Norman this much: YOU do NOT understand the nature of the dramatic soprano. I've noticed of late some pop singers are rather inappropriately referred to as Divas, singers who really know little about the actual mechanism of the voice and all it can do. Jessye Norman is a Diva in every sense of the word. She also has a wonderful sense of humour. She once had trouble getting in to her seat on a plane and the stewardess said to her : Perhaps if tried sideways..... Jessye Norman replied : My dear, I have no sideways!"

Jessie was and is the Best of her craft without peer.. Many are Similar in their own right examples being Kathleen Battle… yet No Other.. soprano has the sheer volume and crisp intensity of her caliber…..She reigns now forever in the stars!!!!
In the REALM OF OPERATIC MUSIC , I am so delighted....delighted that the GOOD FORCES OF THE UNIVERSE CHOSE Ms. JESSYE NORMAN! OH how wonderfully she executes those notes in "Es Gibt ein Reich"! Her singing makes me believe even in things I cannot see.
Lyric technic is an amazing and physiological work!In this video with Madam Jessye Norman , it happens an amazing moment,the open “gola”,the movements of the tongue going down,up,closing the “gola”,opening the eyes like”surprise!!!”,closing the mouth throwing the sound to the head.....what a lesson!!!To be seeing over and over again and confirm that our body is a great instrument in singing TOO!
I wish there were more recordings at a similar angle. It was amazing to see how relaxed her tongue is and exactly how she used the space in her mouth. Extremely helpful!
I truly love the arts. Me being a singer myself. I get sterotyped as a R&B singer, but Opera and many other genres have inspired me to expand my range as well as expose others to what people in other smaller countries already embrace. The first award I ever won was for singing Opera, Jessye Norman was my inspiration.
This is my piece for my final exam this sem.. it's quite tough to sing, yet, Jessye Norman sung it very well.. She has such an amazing voice.. trully awesome:)
She is always inside the music - particularly when singing the lieder of Richard Strauss. They are difficult songs to really execute well possibly because the textures obscure somewhat the absolute simplicity of mood inherent in each. They can easily be overdone. They are a complete marriage between voice and all that lives around it to bring lyricism into being. For me, the songs themselves almost determine the timbre of voice to sing them. This is so beautiful to me!
That's a famous gag from the 20's, Ernestine Schumann-Heink said it to Caruso while he was trying to help her get into a taxi.. Well-known and beloved by everyone in the opera biz, Norman was obviously quoting it and expected people to recognize it.

It does look like she is lip synchinging but regardless her voice is AMAZING!!! I can't get over how wide her mouth goes, thats crazy. But damn if that is what creates that beautiful sound, I am all for it. You go girl!!! I am doing this song this semester, but I am a high baritone/tenor. KEEP ROCKING JESSYE!!!!!
