@@TravelBeans Im sorry about your van breaking down, I have never own a van but I am no stranger to being stranded on the side of the road. It just sucks.

I enjoy the fact that you don't edit the videos to death, and you leave the banter, and bloops and stuff in! You guys have a funny great energy, that is fun to watch, and makes the videos fun! Great video. I would have to say that we are all guilty of ignoring our surroundings. Yes, it is definitely a natural thing to take what's nearby for granted.. we're so lucky that the filming really encourages us to get outside and see more than perhaps we would do otherwise. We're always so grateful for that 🙏 Thanks so much for the lovely comment and for watching 🥰
Loving the T4 Life, this happened to me a couple of times on the mine, a weak point is the gear linkage bushings, parts are about a tenner and make sure you check them before longer trips, takes about half hour to change them out, when you said he bodged it with zip ties I knew straight away what the problem was, that's why I keep a pack of zippies in the glovebox as it's happened twice in my T4 over the 8 years of owning it 🤘🏻
Goodwood is both a world famous horse racing venue and a world famous racing circuit. The stadium you showed is for the horse racing course. Only recently found your videos and I love the balance that you’ve got between banter and fact, the van and where you are.
In 40 years of marriage we have never left these wonderful shores on Holiday. We camp, all around the UK and still wonder at the beauty all around us. Yes some may like the white sands and palm trees to sit and have their cold drinks on sunny beaches or swimming pools, give me camping and travelling in the Uk anytime. Hope you sort the van out soon....
Funny how English travelers have “discovered” the beauty of England during the pandemic. Sometimes we are too quick to go elsewhere before we discover our home.
well it is funny but the lady in the video said she'd never been to the South Downs and here's me in Scotland, having never been where they had been in Scotland
I’m catching up because I recently came across your channel because of The Endless Adventure. In 2002, my husband and I took the 10 hour trip from our home in CT to my in laws in Downeast Maine for Thanksgiving. We were an hour away from the in laws on our way home when something went wrong with our 1998 Saturn. We had to have the car towed the 2 hours to Bangor, ME and my father in law had to come get us and bring us back to his house. It ended up being the h head gasket. The repairs weren’t going to be worth it. We ended up buying a 2002 Saturn. It was scary because were in the middle of buying a home. We had that Saturn until December of 2019. It didn’t owe us a penny. Now we get to share the story of how we waited an hour with all of our luggage inside the front entry of a little drug store waiting for my father in law while the Saturn was on its way to Bangor. My father in law was a peach. I miss him dearly.
Yep Goodwood is a very famous racecourse for flat racing. Nearby is the Goodwood Festival of Speed, 4 days dedicated to motorsport and car culture and the Goodwood Revival, Historic car racing
Alex, Emma is right, Goodwood is famous. Was lovely seeing my part of the world (from Littlehampton) but I can't believe you've never been to Blackdown Emma!
I had a cambelt break on the M5 in Devon, after midnight! (some cars would have been seriously damaged by this, but mine was one of the few that wasn't!) Instantly found by the cops, who called out a guy, who towed me to his garage, fitted a new cambelt, and sent me on my way at 2 am for a total charge of £90. I am still amazed, thank you Mr Mechanic.
Oh, listen to the recovery man, he said, he'll be behind you till Billingshurst. Wow, that made my heart miss a beat.... I grew up in Billingshurst but have lived in Switzerland for many years now. You've just made me feel a little homesick ☹️. Anyway, despite that little incident, this is, once again, a wonderful video, thanks. Greetz from 🇨🇭 Steve.
First time i ever went in a camper van, i hired an old one from a bandit near leicester. Gear lever literally ripped out of the floor going through chesterfield. The guy who rented it to me basically refused to help, so I got the AA to tow me to the campsite on flatbed, put it in 1st gear so i could drive onto the site, camped in it for a couple of nights and then used my AA membership to get a rental car delivered to the site - left the van in the field and told him it was his problem to collect it! Bought my own one after that so didn't put me off! (moral of the story - beware old rental VWs as they are variable and often unreliable, and long standing AA membership is occasionally worth every penny and more)
It's Emma's infectious laugh that make your channel a magnet. The contents so informative and so funny. You two are such a nice couple. England is beautiful.
I'm dealing with a car repair issue right now. My car had a simple issue, and when they towed it, the guy caused over $2,500 (£1,800) damage because he improperly towed it. Its been almost a month and I had a road trip planned this summer. So needless to say. Upset about it.
Emma is absolutely right Goodwood is a very well renowned racecourse and it is also used for other events. Credit to you both for being so cheerful when you broke down, I hope your T4 doesn’t prove to be too expensive to fix. Enjoy Thailand.
Goodwood RC was the place for big time British motor racing in the after WWII until the mid-/late- 60s. It fell into disrepair until Lord March spearheaded an effort to restore it in the late 70s or early 80s. Now used exclusively for vintage motor shows and racing events. Glad you got home safe. Have fun in Thailand.
I live near Goodwood. Yep, we’ve got it all going on over there; “Glorious” (horse racing), Festival of Speed, Goodwood Revival( vintage motor car racing) and a few miles down on the coast is East and West Wittering ( the dunes) we’re so lucky to be living in such a beautiful part of the world! Great videos by the way thank you!👍🏻😃
Very impressed with the natural beauty. Couldn't take me eyes off them! The gearbox selector failure is a common problem on T4s due to old bushings collapsing allowing ball joints to give way. Shouldn't be too expensive to fix. So you can blow your holiday money on cocktails. Cheers!
We just broke down in our T4 while in Snowdon, starter motor and leaking hose £300, gutted! Last year our gear selector gasket broke and he fixed that with cable ties, I ordered a replacement part and with the help of a neighbour did the job at home for less than a fiver 🤞

England is realy beautiful :-) As for breakdowns. Once the engine of my car got loose (one of the three bolts holding it broke off) in a fury of sparks. Another time my steering wheel got locked in a busy turnaround.
Many years ago, my throttle got stuck full on as I was negotiating a large roundabout. Before I could react, the car hopped about like a kangaroo, until I switched off the ignition and pulled over! Quite fun really!

Hey Guys! All true about Goodwood, but you're at the Horse Racecourse, the Festival Of Speed is at Goodwood House at the bottom of the hill, south of where you are, and further south than that is Goodwood Motor Circuit where they have the Goodwood Revival. Keep up the good work. Love your film making style. 😉👌
In the late '70s 6 of us headed off to France in a rented vw bus and we got as far as Brixton before the same thing happened to us. The AA reconnected our gear linkage and we continued to the ferry finding we had just 3rd and 4th gear. At the ferry we borrowed a spanner, made some adjustments and then drove about 1600 miles for our holiday... Brave or just young and foolish.

Here is my story about vehicle breakdown. My wife and I were driving from Boston Ma. to Richmond Va. in a rented Budget truck (300,000 miles) loaded with stuff. We were moving to our new home. As we pulled into the driveway of our new home. The truck just simply died. Talk about luck. Hopefully, you'll have the same luck with inexpensive repairs. Love you guys.
A few years back, we took our camper to Newquay. My wife also drive her convertible car along, so we'd have a run-about during our stay. About 2 miles from the campsite, the front-right wheel of my wife's car came loose and bounced off down the road ahead of her! The car was taken to a local mechanic who lent us a very dodgy VW beetle with multiple faults which we used for the week it took them to repair her car. They put way too many new parts into it and overcharged us a hell of a lot.
Goodwood racecourse is one the biggest racecourses in the UK & The Goodwood Festival is on all this week on ITV , there's a field that sits above the racecourse that you can sit & watch the racing for free 👍🏻😎
Hi Beans, watching your channel during lockdown(s) helped inspire me to travel as soon as I could. In May I chucked an airbed in the back of the car and headed up to Scotland on my own. Had a stopover in the Lake District and drove up a steep hill to Britain's highest pub (in the morning, but still). That's when the car broke down :-P. I called some local garages and found one that could tow. The guy came up but couldn't fix it there and then. That's when I broke it to him that I was sleeping in the car (and this ain't no camper, it's a Ford Focus). He said no worries, they can probably fix it that day, if only they can get it down the hill. He towed it to the steep bit, and that's when I realised what he meant... it was too steep to be towed, so he said I'd have to freewheel it down!! I must have looked scared out of my mind, because he then offered to do it for me, and let me drive his car down instead :-D. Once at the garage, it quickly became clear that it was a big job. They were so nice, they pushed my car into a pretty field next door and let me sleep there. Lovely views in the morning so long as I didn't turn round and look at the garage behind me ;-). Next day I did a walk and the car was ready in the afternoon. Total cost: £120. I thought to myself, wow, that's cheap, but maybe it's just cheaper up north. Later on I looked at the invoice and realised they'd only charged me for parts, not labour. I think they took pity on me because I was sleeping in my car :-D. It's a 20 year old car and I must have looked like a right hobo! Hope that one cheered you up a bit, and loving the videos as always!
Wow, what an adventure! Awesome that the mechanic took pity on you. I used to do road trips sleeping in my car, before my back injury, and they were good times! 😊
I’d check the car’s $10 thermostat? Unaware and inexperienced drivers sometimes replace the entire radiator, when it could be a rusty radiator spring. You’d be surprised how certain mechanic’s take advantage.
looks like the linkage balls need changing on you gear change mechanism. very cheap about 5 pounds for a repair kit on ebay! i had the same issue on my t4. very easy quick fix and the gears change will be like new again!
I am so glad you cleared up at the end of your video where you are , I was so confused, I thought I had seen that you were in Thailand, I really need to keep track of where I see you posting stuff, UA-cam or Instagram.
You’ve never heard of Goodwood! It’s famous for glorious Goodwood horse racing, down the road is Goodwood airfield an ex WW2 airfield with the motor racing circuit. That’s where they hold the Goodwood revival historic motor racing once a year. Then a short distance away is Goodwood house where they hold the Goodwood festival of speed.
Years and years and years ago I had a Canadian built van (my first car) that I took on a lengthy tour of the American southwest. (I started in Denver, Colorado.) Coming home from Utah, across the massive Continental Divide, and heading down the Rockies back to Denver the clutch went out on the van. I had to leave the van, hitchhike BACK to my folks' home in the Denver suburbs, and then get a couple of friends to get me BACK to the van (left on the side of the road some 50 miles from my destination) and get it back to the street in front of my parents' home where it sat for five months before I could get the clutch replaced. I then sold it. To say I feel your pain is an understatement!
We broke down, on the motorway, at night, homeward bound, just outside Verona - Italy, on a December 1st. Slept beside the motorway that night, were recovered by a Volvo Commercial main dealer in the morning… the rear diff had shattered! Spent a week sleeping in the van outside the workshop, in the snow, whilst parts were specially ordered in from Germany… cost €2000! That was 11 years ago, so was even more expensive to us 😆 had to sell our camper conversion when we got back, to repay the money we had to borrow to have the repair. Ps, 👍 to natures beauty 😉😁☺️
Haha! Love you guys...my beloved T4 broke 1/2 a mile from home...cam belt snapped and cost me 2k. I did rebuild my 302,000 mile motor though...here's to another 302,000 miles😁
Ah, natural beauty...like when a coworker told me I must see the Broads of Norfolk on my first trip to England. I thought it was, um, something else 🤔🤣
If you are going to be driving around in a 53 plate camper, may be it would be an idea to have a AA or RAC ect type of breakdown and recovery cover do you think 🤔 certainly be cheaper than calling a local garage ect.
you two are sooo lovely to watch - without bering soooo cool vanlifers who just run from one instagramable spot to the next - your are down to earth! thank you so much for taking us on your adventures, and never give up on your T4! big hugs from germany 🥰
Same happened to my T4 last weekend, pulled out from a junction, gear linkage bushes went. I managed to 'repair' it with a jubilee clamp...which is still holding after a couple of hundred miles. It's a shame that a part that only costs a few £ can cause so much grief. Good luck.
Keep traveling everywhere you want to while young . You've seen most of your home , maybe not all but don't wait til you old to try to go hike Swiss alps..
That sucks after you put that work into it, unfortunate thing with vehicles being a crap shoot. You both make amazing and enjoyable videos so focus on what you do great in the meantime
All about 20 mins away from me. I would guess your gear change linkage had broken / poped off as not much else you can on a gearbox with a cable tie!! good tip ask the garage to show you how it was held together, you never know when you might need to fix it again!
You probably know by now bits it’s just the gear linkage bushes that’s are gone, very common on a T4. Not too hard to do, about £15 for the genuine parts, an a couple hours to do it yourself or probably £100 at a garage 👍
Sounds like he’s tied the gear linkage up for you…mine went last year..easy fix and cheap too. Common failure on the older t4s, 2 plastic balls need replacing, piece of cake for any mechanic worth his salt. That looked a beautiful spot, somehow our countryside seems to get better and better, you’ll be back on the road in no time. Nice video.
@@TravelBeans Simon said it all. Very cheap part and simple repair. Lots of online guides at T4 Forum. Get an original part and, while you are there, replace all the other linkage bushings and perform the short shift mod. Well worth it and will be ready for another 25 years! The large gearbox bushing here in Portugal is like 2 or 3€ at a VW dealership. Mine broke down at nigh in Serra da Estrela and with a couple zip ties it was good to go until the end of our vacations, 2500km later!
Got my replacement parts from Justkampers…word of warning, the ball (engine side) had a roll pin in it, replacement didn’t come with hole for said roll pin…took me ages to get the sucker off, lol. Also took me ages to get back on but, I’m no mechanic..if I can do it, you can. Good luck 🤙🤙
Common fault on a T4, the nylon bushes on the gear linkage pop out when they get worn. Simple DIY fix with the bushing kit only a few pounds. Good luck.
Yeah it’s the gearbox linkage, they are these little white balls, pretty cheap part, around £15 something like that, you could attempt yourself? But garage wouldn’t charge too much don’t think.

Well I've got to agree, I was enjoying the frontage.
All I can Say is Alex..... Youre a Lucky Man!!!!!!
Yes. Goodwood is iconic
I am so glad you cleared up at the end of your video where you are , I was so confused, I thought I had seen that you were in Thailand, I really need to keep track of where I see you posting stuff, UA-cam or Instagram.
You Both are Terrific People
Aw thanks 🥰
This is my best race track ever!!! Famous for many many things there!
Goodwood is quite famous for the horseracing and also they have car events there
We broke down, on the motorway, at night, homeward bound, just outside Verona - Italy, on a December 1st.
I did rebuild my 302,000 mile motor though...here's to another 302,000 miles😁
yep - I live in Canada and my Father, brother and mother have all traveled to goodwood a couple of times for a vintage racing/fashion event!
Alex are you kidding us. Goodwood is very famous. Glorious Goodwood etc. never mind all the motorsport events etc as well.
Glorious Goodwood!
Can't believe you removed the sunglasses Alex 😎 great chanel great work from you both 👍🏻
Goodwood is definitely famous, Emma is right
Same happened to my T4 last weekend, pulled out from a junction, gear linkage bushes went. I managed to 'repair' it with a jubilee clamp...which is still holding after a couple of hundred miles. It's a shame that a part that only costs a few £ can cause so much grief. Good luck.
OMG!!! Festival of Speed is very famous and young drivers go there as well as F1 drivers. Emma you are so right 👍🏻
Keep traveling everywhere you want to while young . You've seen most of your home , maybe not all but don't wait til you old to try to go hike Swiss alps..
That sucks after you put that work into it, unfortunate thing with vehicles being a crap shoot. You both make amazing and enjoyable videos so focus on what you do great in the meantime
Thanks Justin 👍 hopefully we'll be able to get it up and running soon enough 🤞😊
@@TravelBeans fingers crossed that it will not be something major that needs done so you can enjoy more of the summer in your vehicle
1st Goodwood, then the sunglasses! Thanks Dan! 🤌👎🤣
It’s so famous it’s Glorious!
Don't they have an art trail in the grounds at Goodwood, with many installation art objects?
@@thetessellater9163 I believe they do - although I have never been there myself.
@@harrisonandrew - Anthony Caro's work is low value art !
Don’t get ripped off guys it’s sounds like it’s just your gear selector that’s got a problem so shouldn’t be a big or expensive job 👍
Yes ! Goodwood is legendary !!
Nice video.
Yay! This makes us feel much better thank you!!
Good luck.
Proper man or van lifer who owns a T4 would know this and be able to fix it without having to get his girl to ring for help!!
Welcome to the South Downs!
Good wood race course is extremely famous and well known, some big race meets happen there, along with the festival of speed 😊
Yeah it’s the gearbox linkage, they are these little white balls, pretty cheap part, around £15 something like that, you could attempt yourself? But garage wouldn’t charge too much don’t think.
Try ‘Auto Aid’ recovery, very reasonably priced and fine with older vehicles.
