Big block 496 afr315 heads Straub tech hyd roller cam sound

  • Just installed a custom hydraulic roller cam spec'd for my 496 by Straub technologies. With the heads the engine is about 10.3 compression and the cam is 258/260@ .050 and under 700 lift. I have no performance data yet but follow my channel to find out how it runs.
    Thanks to Fessler Racing Engines for the fast turn around, Shane was able to degree the cam and inspect a few things as I prepare for drag week 2018.

      @@johnsnyder5009 the cam in my engine is isky. The builder prefers them as they will cut whatever the numbers given to them are.
      Sure its an isky cam, but not one of their grinds. Their blank, their machinist, your numbers.
      What part number is that cam? Isn't one.
      No I don't carry my cam card in the wallet.

    Good choice on heads and nice sounding machine , I don’t clean the burnout rubber off my ride either .

      Thanks. I feel the heads are a little big for the compression and rpm I'm running. When I first put them on it lost some 60', .15 or so. I did some spring changes in the distributor to bring that number down but that means what I was doing before could have improved. I have gone back to my ported afr265s and matching intake with this Straub cam. Should dyno in the next week with the hope of being 750 around 6500 rpm.

      On a sidebar on head size I had some 305 AFR with only the chambers CNC when they offered that on my Procharged 540 as they were originally for my 496 , with these heads it had air wrench throttle response , I then swapped to 335 CNC heads as I felt they were a better size for the 540 and throttle response softened from air wrench to efi , this was on a blow through carb .

    I’ve been looking at that FiTech ultra ram for the big blocks. It would look like a huge LS with coil near plug setup.

      I don't believe I've seen that. Coil on plug scares me, more parts to go bad.

    $500 Valve Covers with a $5 Alternator Bracket

      Sadly cheap China valve covers. I had the alternator bracket for the last 30 years. I'm pretty sure it came with the 396 that was built for the car in 1991. It has a low mount billet bracket now thanks to a buddy that couldn't use it

    Currently have a similar setup to this one that made just over 600 through a dual plane at the crank and went 10.89 at 127
    454SS truck
    496 with hbeams, 11.2cr
    AFR full cnc 265s
    Straub cam 235/235 .575 on 106lsa
    Jakes perf 4l80e 4k stall
    Top end never did pull as hard as my old 237/241 .635 112lsa howards cam did, so I was considering a cam swap and going to victor jr single plane oval intake
    I stumbled upon your vids when looking into Bullet HR cam as I am considering the change.
    So do you have any regrets on going with the bullet cam from your other videos?
    How did you like it overall?

      The bullet cam was a down grade at the time. It was the largest from the ultra dyne catalog. It replaced a smaller lift cam. I went from .612 to .650 at the time and slowed down. That cam was replaced by one my machinist spec'd. He ported my intake and opened the heads up to more of a traditional rectangle shape from the roval. That was a 680 hp combo. The factory 265s, oval intake, and .612 roller cam made 590/590 basically. I $pent a lot to get my crap moving. Could have saved a bit had I known the mufflers were killing it.

      Alot of roller lifter and rockers make noise no matter how you adjust them, I have a Howard's roller cam kit and makes noise, we works fine, plus you really dont hear them when your inside the car with the pedal down

      @@bure4me On hydraulic rollers it usually does. Have you checked to see how much lift you actually have at the valve? With that noise, you will lose lift due to flex unless you use a good shaft system.
      Those valve seats are definitely taking a beating. What's the duration @ 006"?

      @@AB-80X i guess you haven't seen any of my more recent videos. I'm not worried about the cam. it's making 725 HP in a 496 that drives thousands of miles and makes mid 9 second passes with some nitrous and been 9 on the engine with sea level air in 3550 lbs car with 3.25 gears. I have not touched a rocker since it was refreshed last year.

      I still had flowmasters in this video but they have been replaced with dynomax ultraflow

      It made 690s with a mid pipe piece that later was determined to kill 20 hp. Fuel injection needed it to keep the o2 that far from the open exhaust. It should have made 715-720 at 10.3 compression. I'm adding 2 pts and a ported intake this off season.

      How satisfied are you with the Straub cam? I just had him spec a topend kit for me. I'm building a 1987 c10 and am torn between a 565 bbc pump gas hyd roller that Staub assured me wpuld make 850hp at the crank on 93 or doing a whipple blown ls?

      Absolutely, I just know for what I want to do I need more power. They were ported and will be for sale really soon.

      @@musclebone7875 it depends on a few factors. They are about to get cleaned up so the bill will be factored. I also have the matching cam that made 679 hp an possibly the intake so it might be a 3 pc power pkg.

      @@infamousnova i run manual disk. as it is the header tube is about touching the proportioning valve. I would have to add a small booster and they cost $. I spend for speed currently. A brake change is on the horizon but they work pretty well.

      @@infamousnova depends on what sbc you had and how complete and what stock bbc. if you had a built sbc probably not a good deal for a gen V or gen vi stocker.

      @cv 67 I ended up going ls or 5.3. Sold my sbc and bought the ls with that money and a intake and msd box. Still had money left over but emergencies always pop up when I try to do my car
