ReadingJunkie - I think in a lot of movies in which the female lead is not conventionally beautiful, her character arc finished with: a makeover, a sudden surge of self-esteem from her new look, success in her goals and a guy. This wouldn’t be bad per se, but it’s always the same kind of beautiful. It’s nice that in this film, she critiques the way larger women are treated and society’s obsession with the one type of beautiful. At least she does in this scene

Despite everything, I love how the sales guy in the back is paying close attention to their conversation just in case Rosemary was being harassed and he went up to her to help.
Another commenter said that, on the DVD with director's commentary, the director said that they knew him as a doctor who was nice to their friend and treated people without insurance. Seems like a good man in life, too.
The silvery-headed guy who asks Gywneth if everything is OK is a medical doctor in real life. The directors of the movie gave him that part because he had been kind to friends of theirs, treating those who didn't have any medical insurance. EDIT: His name is Dr David Kipper. Plenty of videos here on UA-cam. Fun fact: He treated Johnny Depp during the Amber Heard court case, and didn't get paid! He did testify during the trial though.
I saw an interview once where Gwyneth Paltrow said she put on a fat suit for fun and went out in public, and then later went home and cried about the fact that not one person so much as looked at her, let alone talked to her. That's how cruel and superficial society can be.
***** You try wearing a fat suit for one day and see what it feels like to be one of the huskier folk and see what kinds of cruel and nasty verbal as well as nonverbal responses you get from others, if any at all.
I love the message of this movie. Imagine if peoples inside showed on the outside because really inside is what matters. So many mean and awful gorgeous people out there and more average or below average-looking people with beautiful personalities.
Over time that is exactly what happens. Once you get to know someone, if they are a nice person, they become more physically attractive. The problem is that most people don't give it time and/or don't make an effort to get to know someone if he or she is not hot.
I wouldn't call it a masterpiece. The first half was good. The second half was awkward and just poorly executed. There was a lesson here, but I could have learned it without seeing disfigured children in a burn unit.
Gwyneth was really good in this movie. For all the crap she gets (which when it comes to her personality, definitely can't disagree with), she's quite a good actress.
Jeez, this movie has positive messages and good role models, yet damn Rotten Tomatoes gives it a bad score. Rotten Tomatoes critics are heartless. Shallow Hal is one of the best romantic comedy-dramas.
The reason they gave it low scores was because they used cheap laughs at the expense of making fun of Rosemary. I thought they humor was great. They had to get the point across between what Hal saw, and the rest of the world saw.
Mike C. Rotten Tomatoes does not review movies nor hire critics. It's a review aggregator. Shallow Hal currently holds a 51% based 126 reviews, which if you think about it, isn't that bad. It just means one out of every two of the reviews were positive
Rotten Tomatoes always have really bitter reviews even on great movies, it's like a site for people looking solely for things to dislike in a movie and then base the entire movie on those little things.
I mean Gwyneth is beautiful... But in this movie she looks absolutely _stunning_ omg I also started the movie thinking that it was going to be super bad but it ended up being pretty good and it also has a good message
I'm not a fan of Goop or anything Gwyneth does IRL but I loved her portrayal of Rosemary. You can see the caution and hurts she bears throughout the movie. I also think the movie is clunky and unintentionally sexist but a good effort.
man i love this movie it's 1 of my all time favs, Gwyneth and Jack's performances are underrated in this 1, Gwyneth was painfully gorgeous back then, i still like her now but she was next level stunning back then
Carmen Wakefield I agree I've met some big people who are very unlikable but I don't think that's what it means. it was just trying to tell us that sometimes ugly people have beautiful personality and sometimes pretty people don't.
Not a fan of Gweneth Paltrow, apparently she's a snooty little princess BUT I gotta hand it to her, she's a very good actress. She had me feeling so sorry for her in this scene. She portrayed a big girls insecurities so very well.
Goddamn, what a great first scene for this character. Sure Paltrow can’t do an English accent to save her life but she perfectly nailed this character. You really get the confusion and hurt she displays when Black tries to hit on her. At the same time, she shows great sympathy and acceptance when he apologizes. Most of all, she exhibits great confidence. Love that quality in people and it’s more attractive than a fit figure.
