  • Here is the tenth video for ‘Taxidermy Tip Tuesday’, aimed at making taxidermy and our neighbouring industries (entomology, articulation, restoration etc.) more accessible and providing resources for beginners. This resource is available to all, please feel free to share it wherever you feel it’s needed.
Apologies for no captions but for some reason I couldn’t get the app to sync. All of the captions were repeatedly off or not showing up at all.
Here I am demonstrating how I wire small bird legs creating a channel in the leg first and removing the tendons. It is crucial to free up a space in the leg before you try to put wires in or you will be met with resistance and this may result in injury to the specimen. This tip only takes a few minutes to do but will be the difference between your birds legs being wired successfully or potentially poking out the skin/shredding the leg making the wire visible.
Ensure you are using the appropriate gauge wire for your specimen. This is soft galvanised wire but you can also use copper wire for birds this small. I use both but have shown this wire for this video. If the wire is too large it will shred the leg open.
I apologise for my poor overhead filming set up. If anyone has any recommendations for me for how to effectively film ‘aerial’ I would be grateful to receive them. I hope once I have a better set up I can re record this video for closer viewing.
Any questions or comments about the technique please leave them below and I will be happy to get back to you. Hope you find this useful!
