- Jim McCann and Ralph McTell perform ‘From Clare to Here’ on ‘The Late Late Show’.
In advance of their show in Dublin’s Olymipia Theatre, lrish traditional folk singer Jim McCann and English singer songwriter Ralph McTell give a performance of ‘Clare To Here’ on ‘The Late Late Show’.
In his introduction, ‘The Late Late Show’ host Gay Byrne describes the duo as,
"Two of the nicest people you could possibly meet in the business."
A ballad about Irish emigration, ‘From Clare to Here’ was written by Ralph McTell and first released by him on his 1976 album ‘Right Side Up’. The song is widely covered and also features on Jim McCann’s 1980 album ‘Jim McCann’.
This episode of ‘The Late Late Show’ was broadcast on 14 November 1981. The presenter is Gay Byrne.
It's a long long way from 1981 to 2022.
Sadly it only seems like yesterday.
Real natural talent. Beautiful.
R.I.P. Jim and Gay.🌹🌹🌹
This is beautiful. When I was a student, I worked building roads around Stoke-on-Trent. I was attached to an Irish gang and this song seems to be all about them. They were nice men, far older than I, but looked after me even though they had far more in the game than I had. It touched a chord with my old Irish mum as well and was one of the songs we chose for her funeral. x
Such a perfect blend of voices and guitars. Written by an English man who understood the complexities of the Irish spirit.
Fabelous Love Jim rip. We were friends for yrs and his wife Phyl rip. Met Ralph with Jim. Its so sad Jim was just a unique singer❤
Bring a tear to a stone, beautiful song.
Ralph McTell is such a great songwriter.
This song always reminds of my uncle Michael who travelled far from home to work on the motorways and being so lonely and writing heartbreaking letters home to my dear mother, it was a tough life!

2 years after Jim left the Dubs.
I wonder if he is any relation to Sean McCann of Great Big Sea.
