LEFT ALONE ON WALNEY ISLAND | Barrow-in-Furness | THE LAKE DISTRICT FREE PARK UP Near the Irish Sea

  • I get left all alone on a small island off the Cumbrian coast!
We leave Coniston Park Coppice CMC site and head to Meathop Fell CMC, via Barrow-in-Furness.
But due to Riki's terrible sense of direction, we walk the wrong way and I end up being abandoned on Walney Island whilst Riki hot foots it back to get the van.
We found a great free park up on the Cumbrian coast well away from other tourists. We had the beach almost to ourselves in peak season! The sun even made an appearance briefly.
Bathing suit on, I brave the waters of the Irish Sea all alone...

@@TheHillsExplore There's a bird sanctuary as well over south end caravan site. The ferry is weather dependent. So if it's high winds torrential, rain or a storm expected they don't run.

Glad you enjoyed Walney Island. Earnse Bay beach at the north end of the golf course is also great, and Biggar Bank, a little further south. The site of the Sandy Gap community centre was once the 'Beachcomber Cafe', a quite popular spot when I was growing up, and had a little 'crazy golf' area off the back. You actually walked past the house I grew up in on Central Drive, on your way to Sandy Gap.
So nice to see my home town in a positive light. Cheers. Great aerial shots and editing by the way.

Best way to come in, through the lanes. The derelict buildings at barrow island were the tea house and canteen for the shipbuilding. They ceased being so in the late 80s early 90s I think. There was also a coffee house opposite on the Better side lol. But gone are the days people would ask to go to the coffee or tea house on the bus. The big school you approach on Walney past the golf club, I used to live in the caretakers house in the school grounds back when I went to that school. I spent many evenings down the beach back before they filled the views with the wind farms (unfortunately). Where the Sandy gap visitors centre is being built, 20 years ago was a cafe called the beachcomber. Back then the Fair used to come to the beach. It had moved from the big park, where it used to be before they built the leisure centre and the area turfs. But it caused disturbances to the residential areas and there would be lots of damage to the school.
You definitely need to pay roanhead a visit. Sandy beach. Not pebbles. Overlooks the dude on estuary. Views are of black Combe and millom.
