Setting Carved Cabochons: A Silversmithing Tutorial
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 лют 2025
- This tutorial is about setting some carved cabochons into a unique Art Deco-ish ring. Sometimes carved stones have some edges that require some creative bezel design. This is an probably an intermediate project. For materials, I used 12 gauge (2.01 mm) sterling square wire, 22 gauge (.66 mm) sterling sheet, and 3/16 inch (4.76 mm) fine silver bezel in 28 gauge (.33 mm). The stones are roughly 12x18 mm. As always, I use hard silver sheet solder and a liquid flux.

@@Ohnochokin Thank you Ohnochokin!
One of a kind for sure, liked the ring band a lot 🙂
Thanks Elin!
Another cool art nouveau piece!
Very creative! I love it!
Thanks Ann! Happy new year!
Good morning!
Good morning Terri:)
I have a couple odd shaped pieces I want to make, this is very helpful! Also, I have raised stones to fit the bezel, but didn’t know I could raise only one side. I thought it would make the stone rock.
Doesn't seem to. I've set a lot of poorly cut or stones with uneven backs, and sometimes you need to use some strategic backing:)
I use old pennies or copper squares to raise a bezel.
Interesting! I don't think I've ever heard of anyone doing that. Does that work pretty well for you Terri?
@ copper is a higher melting point than silver. It also works great for raising items to heat from the back. You CAN solder the copper to the silver so you have to be careful of doing that.
BTW, I love my Pickle Time cup!!
Solder flows toward the heat. You just made sure it came all the way through the band.
Bonus points awarded to Terri!
Where did you find the stones?
I got those from a vendor in Denver at one of the shows. I'm sorry Malcolm, but I don't remember which one.
Chad, I was a member of your Patreon but it looks like my membership ended before the year was up. Does that auto renew? When I look at the billing history is says I was never billed but I was billed and had your 2nd level access over the last year. Are you having issues with Patreon? I am not sure what to do so I thought I would contact you to see if you know about how the subscription renews because I don't see anything about that when I log into Patreon. I am posting here because Patreon tells me I have to upgrade to post on Patreon. Thanks, Dave Diggs, NC
I’ll try to figure out what is going on David. Sorry about that. I think when you signed up you had to select whether it auto renewed or not. Let me work on finding some info.
