Free Tip: When you plan to use a flathead screwdriver as a wedge or pry bar, put some electrical tape on the tip and blade. It will keep it from scratching up your stuff! 👍

UNREAL!!! Thanks. I too had the exact same sound. And mine was even a bit easier to fix; as soon as I took the front cover off, evidently it took the needed pressure off, and the sound went away. I even sat there in front of it and ran a whole load of clothes to verify. I did the old; you know, "Trust But Verify", and the sound was gone. Put the front back on (Leveled the right, front foot 1st) and sound was gone. AWESOME! Thank goodness for folks like you who post these posts.... Rock on!

Thank you and thank you again!!! I lifted the washing machine while in operation and placed a placed a 2 inch piece of wood underneath....the noise stopped immediately. You're a lifesaver and you saved me money too!

Someone gave me their washer because it was making the same loud noise. Your video helped me solve the problem in just a couple of minutes. As other commenters noted, mine had a bent bottom panel, I just bent it down out of reach of the drive pulley and problem solved. Thanks for posting this and including the sound of the issue! That sound was exactly what I was hearing.

The thin aluminum bottom plate usually is bent 5 to 8 inches in from using a hand truck. Push the bottom plate back down with a broom handle or with a hammer...whatever it takes. When moving use a small piece of plywood or a board across underneath the bottom of the washer so the thin aluminum bottom plate won't be bent up like the aluminum of an aluminum turkey baking dish. The barrel hung on four rods moving all around is normal. At least two parts on the bottom of the barrel scrub on the bottom plate making the awful sounds when there is no clearance. Your solution worked but in the end might effect the workings 'cause the unit is supposed to be level. I admire your gusto in seeking solution on your own!

Wondering if this could also be an issue as washer I just bought used was just moved in with hand cart. Previous owner may have moved it into their place with hand cart too because they had the noise from then
My exact model washer began doing this a few days ago. After removing the front panel, I noticed the bottom metal panel was bent up on the right side. Obviously the last time we moved the washer out of the laundry room we used a hand cart, which must have bent the bottom panel up into the agitator wheel.
After pounding the panel down and placing a thick foam piece under a metal piece under the motor to lift the entire assembly up a bit, the noise stopped! 😁

Thank you! You just saved me over $500!!! Either to call an appliance repair service or buying a new washer. I didn't have the pulley scraping though. Mine was brackets that are there to stabilize the basket during shipping. We pushed the floor down, it's very flexible, almost floppy. My washer bis probably 19 years old, this is the first problem I've had with it. AND I CAUSED IT!!!!
We had to move the washer to get to a broken pipe behind it. WHAT A RACKET it made!!!!

I have a whirlpool and it does this noise ONLY on the drain and spin cycle and it is LOUUDDD. My bf said we have got to get rid of this washer and I don’t want to bc it still works. And im soooo glad I came across this video bc I had already invested for someone to come out and look at the washer and fixed “something” and it’s still doing the same noise after $285. I just want to say thank you! Our washer was making same noise. After leveling the front with the adjustable plastic feet, it is completely quiet! Just the normal R2D2 agitator noise😊

Lady you just saved me some money. Mine was a newer model GE though without sheet metal on the bottom. What was happening was I had put a couple of 2x6 boards behind to keep a space for the hoses and the bottom of the back sheet metal was being pushed towards the agitator as people lean on the front of the machine. I guess It's why it didn't start doing that ratcheting noise until a couple months after installing. That didn't bother the Kenmore but the GE don't like it. So I raised the four jack stands up to get the machine higher and level as possible. This one seems to want to be level. Then I put thinner boards in the back, maybe 5/16" to 3/8" thick to keep the back wall off my hoses but they clear the sheet metal at the bottom now. And nothing solid on either side to wedge between the wall and sheet metal. Now it does the full loads with no ratcheting noise.. . . So far, lol
I like that "bulky items" option on this newer GE so I'll keep it as long as it runs.

The bottom pan gets flexed sometimes on GE washers and the drive pulley scrapes the panel.
When moving with two wheel trucks, be sure to pull the washer back as you pull the trucks back snd don’t let the lip of the truck flex the bottom panel.

Mine (GE) is making same noise I checked to see if clothes were balanced. OK does it all the time. Googled & saw your video. Gonna try it

To get tbe front panel off....you aren't supposed to pry it off like that. Instead, use something flat like a putty knife and slide it in horizontally in that same spot and it will disengage that clip you showed at the 2:00 mark. When you push the putty knife in, you will hear the clip disengage from its hole in the panel and with the putty knife still pushed in, pull the panel towards you and then do the other side the same way.
Thanks for your input on this. I do agree that would work great and in fact, at minute 1:39, I mention that it would help to have a stiff scraper, like a paint scraper. A putty knife would work great also. 👍

The bottom pan was rubbing on the dive pulley. Sometimes the pan gets bent while using a hand truck, sometimes the damper balancing rods wear out and the tub drop down too low and rubs on the bottom pan.
Thanks for your comment! Yes, I found that the bottom of the tub (the metal part) was definitely scraping the bottom of the washer.

The real fix is to WD40 the suspension rods. WD40 where they sit in the plastic and the spring itself and this noise will go away

Tht noise is the clutch on the bottom of the tub. If there's no bottom on your machine, just tilt it and you'll see the belt on the bottom, under the plastic cover. 2-4 bolts, n easy peezy
Why is the machine making the squealing sound? I just got a new GE and it's awful. Not only grinding/squealing noise but pounding noises when spinning and it moves at least 1 foot into the room. Hate my new washer.

I have the exact same problem. I have a GE HydroWave. I cannot seem to get the front off but I think I've been trying to get the top off instead. However with some minor adjustments I do think it is probably out of balance. I can get to the feet on the bottom but can't get them any higher. Any idea how to get the front loose? Otherwise I guess I have to find something to put under the feet and see if that helps.
Putting something under the feet might possibly work. It usually doesn’t take a whole lot, I didn’t raise the feet by a lot for it to work. I don’t know a lot about the Hydrowave, I would Google your model and question. It has been surprising how much I have found about specific models, there is so much out there now about things like this. You might want to take a flashlight and look towards the front top inside the seam and see if it looks like there are spring clips in there as shown in the video. If there are, it should open from the front.

Is it normal for the motor to make that noise

So Some people are successful covering a small putty knife with tape (to not damage your machine and then pushing it in between the joint where it should push in the spring a little.) Fast forward it to the part where I talk about this and have a close look at what the spring looks like so you have an idea how it works.
Yes, approx. 5" in from the right side and from the left side, there are clips. Just push in with some pressure, and the clips will pop and unclip, pry downward/toward you and the front comes off.
Did you also have to do the back screws as well or just the front???
For this particular fix, only the front was needed. It is possible that raising the back screws might help in your particular case.

based on the video you don't have to unscrew anything you just need to level you machine I just fixed mine same problem
If you do a super heavy load do you hear like a clunk from the motor or the belt drive
Good question! I don’t think that is meant to happen. If you do, hear that, you may need to raise the leg up more. Maybe try different things to see what gets it to stop.

I have a sticker washer and dryer and it’s making a metal grinding sound everytime it tries to spin while sense filling but it spins and drains fine just the small kick spins during cycles it’ll grind
