    I love them both but the difference I see is that Shawn takes advantage of her low center of gravity and catered her style and skills to that. While Nastia on the other hand takes advantage of her long flexible legs and of course catered to that.
    They're both so good that it's more a matter of personal taste and not so much a judgment on their skill or execution.

      “Solid and sure” is such a great way to describe Shawn’s beamwork… her footing is so confident that a lot of her skills look virtually indistinguishable to the same ones on even ground! I think their anatomy has a lot to do with it. Shawn is shorter and more muscular so she has that power to launch herself of the beam and her body turns quicker (cause of air resistance and she’s shorter so her legs come around faster). Nestia has much longer limbs so when she flips it takes a bit longer for her feet to reach the ground again, making her more graceful. She has these long limbs that give her the advantage of allowing her to use them elegantly. So because of that she does more splits and turns and everything just a bit slower and less rushed that makes it look graceful. Both are great 👍🏼:)

    It's interesting to me to see the difference in their full turns. Shawn clearly drilled the hell out of hers to be able to stay up on her toes by the time Beijing rolled around and her execution there was top notch. I watched the two clips of Nastia's full turn in this video and the really amazing thing is not her releve, which she does with ease, but the way she seems to be able to hit the brakes on a dime and hold the position with incredible control rather than wavering and flailing like a lot of people who can spin that easily and gracefully would do. It's almost like they swapped strengths for that one skill, probably because they knew they needed to. Amazing what gymnastics can bring out of a person!

I remember one of the videos showed the exeuction differences between the 2 using the 2017-2021 cop, Nastia basically scored in the high 8s - low 9s, Shawn only scored in the high 7s
    Nevertheless, I still prefer Shawn overall, there's a sense of commanding people to watch her when she's on the beam, she attacked the beam like no one else did/does. Other than the 2007 worlds, you basically have zero concerns about her possibly falling off

    Shawn’s elegance was so underrated. She honestly had it all. If Nastia could do the high power skills Shawn did, she would have, but she lacked power so she clung to her elegance and lines, (to make some of the most beautiful routines, not my intention to bash her). Shawn had the power to do more dynamic skills, so she did, but did them with such grace and refinement. Just always felt like Shawn’s artistry was overshadowed by Nastia’s, and as great of an accomplishment as Nastia’s artistry was, it was strategically highlighted because she lacked power. Just feel like Shawn’s acrobatic abilities shouldn’t box her into “the powerful one”. She was the full package.

    Non-gymnastic stuff. What I found interesting is a few years ago they talked about how in 2008 they were so young they got caught up in the media narrative that they were rivals and so didn't become friends until later on in life.

      They had been friends all their lives until the above eventually happened which lead to their 8-year separation before finally reuniting when Shawn Johnson invited Nastia Liukin to her wedding.
      But that is something that American media does all the time, regardless of whether the public figures in question are friends or not. Brandy & Monica, Britney Spears & Christina Aguilera, it even happened between Whitney Houston & Mariah Carey and also happens between men--e.g the East Coast/West Coast hip-hop rivalry etc which even resulted in mutilple deaths...
      The penchant of American media for creating artificial narratives over covering factual stories in order to _sell_ is honestly both shameless and embarrassing. But what's sad is how easily and greatly its audience can be deceived by it--especially in this sport; because the misinformation in gymnastics is *rife.*

    You can tell their styles based on their builds as well. Power has more muscle mass, elegance has more lean muscle. Being taller and slimmer lends to a higher capability to be elegant or while being more compact can lead to an easier time bulking

    • @Victor-ch6xp
      @Victor-ch6xp 2 роки тому +11

      @@bagelized I wouldn't be so sure about that. Simone's acro on the beam isn't, in itself, that hard. Shawn had a harder acro series, a back full and a consistent front pike, which Simone was never able to manage. She even had to give up all front flips (barani, front pike) and rely on an aerial walkover to get her front acro requirement. Regarding dance elements, obviously Simone has way better flexibility than Shawn ever did, but with how the cop works I don't think it makes a great difference. The one area where Simone is miles ahead of Shawn, though, is dismounts. Shawn's full-in was inconsistent, while Simone's is top tier.

      I think nastia competition is Suni. They both have the flexibility, artistry, elegance, and difficulty. Ohashi, Shawn, and Simone are in the same competition. Only thing that ohashi has over Shawn and Simone is she has the artistry. She’s missing the flexibility and elegance.

    • @Victor-ch6xp
      @Victor-ch6xp 2 роки тому +1

      @@DL-sl3nt I did state that Simone's flexibility was way better, but with how Shawn's routine was constructed, only having a switch leap (very) short of 180° wouldn't be as a terrible deduction as one would think with her lackluster flexibility. And it's not like Simone *always* hits 180° in her switch half or her side jumps.

    As a former gymnast who was afraid of heights and severely anemic (so my power would go away in an instant), I know some of those leaps/dance skills can be worth a lot of points, sometimes as much as tucks or tumbling combos. I’m not familiar with the modern scoring system, but I bet that’s one way Nastia rakes in the points

      There is a fine line between gymnastics that is more technique and “bulky” and fine-tuned techniques with style. The latter is rather aesthetically appealing than just “chop-chop-chop”.

    • @Ee-pg4nb
      @Ee-pg4nb 2 роки тому

      @@SlickRick4EVER true. Nastia’s was more graceful than Shawn’s. I guess you really can’t compare the two because they were so different from each other. Unfortunately Nastia grew like 3 in in a year so they had to do different moves to showcase her on everything. Another who was like her was Svetlana Khorkina. She too was tall for a gymnast and had to figure out moves that showcased her long lean lines.
