  • What is a Transition Lens?
    Transitions lenses are photochromic lenses that are clear indoors and when you go outside and get direct exposure from UV rays, they activate (get dark). I've told you about it, but now I want to show you how this process happens within a period of 45 seconds (in this case, much less than 45 seconds).
    Look at this, direct exposure to UV rays. I'm using my finger to cover part of the lens to block the rays from activating the part of the lens covered by my index finger. When I remove my finger, you notice that it didn't activate. The transitions or photochromic lenses have to have direct exposure to UV rays. So that is what a transition lens is!
    How Do Transition Lenses Work?
    How is it? it's fascinating. The answer is that it is a carbon based organic compound injected to the front surface of the lens. It is not spread across the entire thickness of the transitions lenses. It is just in the front surface and it is spread evenly throughout the thin layer.
    Keep in mind when deciding on whether or not to get a transition lens that how dark the transition lenses get is inversely correlated with the ambient temperature. That means that if you are in 40 degree fahrenheit weather, the transition lenses will get darker than if you are in 110 or 100 degree weather.
    How Long Does Transition Lenses Last?
    Under normal wear and tear, the transitions lenses are going to last around 2 years. Some people that use them quite a bit, they'll last less. For the most part, it's around 2 years for their shelf life.
    Final Thoughts:
    Transitions or photochromic lenses are great to have in your wardrobe of eyewear. They have a purpose, but what they don't do is they don't completely replace your sunglasses.
    So make sure you still have a pair of polarized sunglasses that protect you against the sun's harmful rays and filter light in a way that they eliminate all light coming in from oblique angles. This is what makes polarized lenses superior to transitions lenses outdoors.
    Transition lenses are great and you should have a pair.
    Then, I perform a magic trick (thanks to fancy editing, LOL)

      @Jc Zzzz the shelf life is 2 years, but they have been known to last longer based on how much they are relied on.
      The more extreme the weather, the more wear and tear on the organic compound that gets activated.
      I hope this helps you! I hope you have a great day

      Hi, thank you for commenting and thank you for your great question.
      I know of two brands of Transitions Polarized lenses. The Transitions Vantage and the Younger Drivewear.
      They are both Polarized Transitions with different characteristics. The Transitions Vantage has a 40% tint unactivated and gets dark Gray. The Younger Drivewear has 40% tint unactivated and gets dark brown(ish).
      Please get a demonstration before purchasing the lenses so you can see if the lenses will fit your intended purpose of use. I hope this answer has helped you. It is always my pleasure to answer and help you in every way I can. Thank you and I hope you have an awesome day

If i was to take the glasses a few days from now if my eyes weren't to adjust to the new lens, and they had to re do it, would they also have to redo the transition meaning they'll charge me again for it??

    • @eyewearrepublic9820
      @eyewearrepublic9820  4 роки тому +1

      Hi The Novice, thank you for your question. Yes, you may certainly get the photochromic in glass. It is called PhotoGray Xtra if you like for the lens to active Gray. And it's called PhotoBrown Xtra if you like the lens to turn Brown.
      Keep in mind, that is called PhotoGrayXtra and PhotoBrown Xtra, not Transitions. Transitions is a brand under the plastic type of photochromics, and PhotoGray Xtra is only Glass.
      I had PhotoGray Xtra before just to try it out and I could only wear it for two weeks before my nose said, "heck No, get this thing off of me"...because it was too heavy.

    • @eyewearrepublic9820
      @eyewearrepublic9820  4 роки тому +2

      Yes, you would benefit greatly from Transitions lenses. They are the lenses that block out 100% of all the HEV blue light that is emitted from electronic and alters your circadian rhythm in a way that disrupts sleep.
      Transitions lenses block 100% of that harmful light. Most products opticals sell to block the HEV blue light only block 30%.

      Yes, please wear the Transitions lenses at night. The Transitions lenses will be clear (non-activated) and will allow you to see very well. I would suggest you also get the Anti-Reflective Treatment with your Transitions lenses to have the best vision that will allow 99.9% light transmission. How do I specify a Transition lens that is NOT provided by a coating? I have worn Transition lenses for decades with no issues except the normal scratches one gets from use.
    However two years ago I relensed my frames and now they are shedding the transition coating like a bad case of dandruff.
    I was not aware that the photochromic property of Transition lenses was provided by a coating. I had thought the lens material exhibited the photochromic property.
    Did I get ripped-off by a disreputable Eye-care center? I was not purchasing a Transition Coated lens but rather a Transition LENS.

      This is the 1st time I have heard of this description of a problem.

      No. The transition coating is clearly flaking off. I have a background placing thin film e-beam dielectric coatings on laser optics I know what an optical coating is. The base lens is clear and there is are small flakes of Grey photochromic dandruff.
      But lets get back to my question. How do I specify a photochromic LENS not a photochromic coating? I thought Transition lenses were made from a photochromic material and NOT a coating.
      Lets concentrate on THAT point please.

    • @_arrgh976

      It is not the AR or Anti scratch coating. While the lenses were purchased two years ago I did not wear them until just recently and they are virtually unblemished. I always keep several Flexon frames and relens them as needed.
      The Photochromic coating is flaking off leaving clear areas behind and there are gray flakes of failed coating material.
      Whether or not I received "Genuine" Transitions I do not know. But that is still not the answer to my question.
      What photochromic lens brand is a photochromic lens material rather than a cheap and crummy coating?

    • @eyewearrepublic9820
      @eyewearrepublic9820  4 роки тому +3

      Hi Nico4132, yes they do. They will last at least two years, with some lasting over 7 years. It depends on how you take care of them and how often they activate and deactivate. The organic compound that enables the darkening of the lens does have a shelf life, but they don't last forever.
      Also, please don't leave them in your car during hot days or over 80 degrees farenheit (uncovered parking), the heat will destroy all lenses, not just Transitions.

      The brown transitions has unique properties. Even though it blocks the same percentage of light (when tested under the light transmittance meter) as the Grey Transitions lenses, it never feels like it does. You are absolutely correct on that observation. I always try to guide people away from the Brown color because of that. I have also tested that the average life span of a transitions lens (in constant use) is 2 years. After two years (of daily UV exposure) it fatigues and stops activating.
