Your comment was... beautiful
@David Russell Yep. The dream if perfection is very real for violinists.

Anyone who is here to complain that they criticized Ben's playing totally missed the point. They are giving him free advice. The world of classical performance revolves around constructive criticism and advice; to anyone who has been trained this way, it is normal. Ben even said on his twitter account that he agreed with them. So you guys can relax because they are actually doing him a favor and providing something for free that most people have to pay for.
Yeah, i don't like the guy, but he's not shit. He has things to improve, and TwoSet was here to point them out, but it was never meant to be something like a roast
@James Jeffrey ......ernie.....?
I think it would be fun to have Ben fly them over and give him lessons, filming before and after videos!
@James Jeffrey what the fuck is wrong with this guy 😂
@James Jeffrey A bit ironic
“Intonation doesn’t care about your feelings,” can we PLEASE get that on a shirt, I’d wear it to all my rehearsals
Maggie Albrecht I’m sure Ben Shapiro himself would wear that shirt. 😂😂

How to save money on learning the Violin:
1. Become famous.
2. Post videos of you playing the violin.
3. Twoset review and give you free classes.
4. Profit.
Andrew Cox well he’s also been playing since childhood
Constructive criticism
Quicker Den 14 his family could pay for training by one of the most famous violinists in LA. This means that not only is money not an issue but also that it was never going to be one

"We're getting way too technical. You guy probably don't even care at this point"
Dude. If they make a 2 hour video giving a masterclass like this of course I would watch it 'till the end
So true
Me too. And I don't even play an instrument!
This feels like a masterclass rather than usual "review"
I like it
Yes! Loved it!
Probably because he can actually somewhat play and it’s not fake Chinese violin acting 😂😂
Yeah they got a chance to get into the technical details
@@jamesstrader4063 yeah that makes sense!
I agree. I like the feedback they have. Since I’m self learning the violin, this is the kind of tips and critiques that will help me improve my sound.
An Orthodox Jew was tense while playing a Catholic song.
Right??? I would never expected to hear a man in a kippah play Ave Maria. Next up...Wagner?
Was expecting the Spanish Inquisition?
Hey man... he knows if he screws up there will be an inquisition
Wasn't Bach Lutheran?
sheepsheep yes he was.
"We're getting way too technical" That's the best thing about this vid! So interesting to see a critique that focuses on subtle issues and musicality instead of 101-level stuff.
I agree! I wish they did more of these 😊
I think Ben is probably good enough to avoid violin 101 stuff. So they’re doing the next level critiques.
Like figure skating if you can't play technically then you really not that good and never will be. When Ben sticks his neck out attacking others then his life is not off limits anymore then when he debates with fake information.
@@drwatsonca6945 Since you decided to get inappropriately political at the end, I'll just say that he doesn't attack anyone any harder than people on the other side of the political divide and his information is certainly not fake. Watching him destroy people on the other side in debates is quite fun to watch. Living under the side that he destroys and watching it kill our economy and society is not fun to watch. That being said and refocusing on playing an instrument, with proper critiquing and practice, he can get better if he chooses. I highly doubt that he resents receiving CONTRUCTIVE criticism which is what the video is obviously offering him.
I’m actually impressed. I knew Ben had been classically trained but given his career is not “concert violinist” and he probably doesn’t play every day or maybe even very often given he probably has a busy work life schedule, he sounds great.
I was going to like your comment but it's on 69 so...
I agree. That was a fairly easy, I'd say intermediate arrangement and he got a beautiful tone out of the instrument and expressed real emotion, not just technical excellence.
Ben is clearly, barely classically trained, from a classically trained professional. He has the skill of someone who dabbles, with a good ear for intervals-hence he plays pretty well in tune. And if you vehemently disagree, then list his violin teachers. Most of us have to have a pedigree to show that we are trained correctly-though his playing is a dead giveaway as well. In the end, Ben being classically trained isn’t the point. Thank you Two-Set for your two-“sense” to help out/guide all of us in our musical journey, or enlighten us in our musical ignorance!
@@tinalettieritechnical excellence? You clearly do not have a background in playing an instrument like the violin, or a very good ear to know what technical excellence is. Not appropriate to comment when we don’t know what we are looking for. Just because you like what you hear, or just because you like Ben Shapiro, doesn’t mean his playing is good violin playing.
@@AmysMusic7 I actually did take violin and piano and my violin teacher, a Julliard grad student ear tested me before she took me on. I have almost perfect pitch. I scored an 86 on my first National Piano Teachers (or whatever it's called) exam at the end of my first year of study. In fact, I could play by ear but I was forbidden from doing so, yes, FORBIDDEN by the technique nazis.
Ben's personality has nothing to do with my understanding of music. For an amateur, he did well but I never said he was technically excellent. In fact, I said the opposite. The arrangement he played is quite simple actually and I'd put it at advanced beginner level. We all start someplace. Yehudi Menuin quit taking lessons because his teachers were insisting on unnatural body movements and postures which is what I was talking about. I took piano for adults in a college and the professor who also taught at Westminster told us, a missed note can be fixed while learning a piece but rhythm is everything. Without it, you don't have a melody. Having to go back to fix a note breaks the rhythm and anyone with an ear know they missed it and can go back and fix it once they understand the piece.
Who else wanted to hear Eddy’s version of “Ave Maria” when he started playing it?
Maybe with the Sibelius at 3Mil?
Ave Maria at 2.5!
It would be a good encore for 3 mil Sibelius drop, indeed

Eh, Ave Maria is best expressed with vocals.
Sometimes I feel like their camera has feelings for the mic.

LOL! Was thinking exactly the same thing during the video.
I rewatched this episode almost 2 years later and we must appreciate the fact that everyone expected a roast and instead we attended a pretty interesting, respectful and complete masterclass
The only thing I can roast TwoSet on is that even after so many years they still don't know how to make the camera focus 😹😹

FRANSISCA NADYA the love between mic and camera became deeper as the time goes 😂

Yeah, I love them but the out of focus camera gets on my nerves haha
They could either hide the Mic or fix the focus to be consistent, it's so easy! 😂 they might be the only >2M channel that has focus issues😂 but they mean a lot to me, I love them :)
As my orchestra teacher says, "It is better to make mistakes than to fake perfection."
I kind of hate that after I'd gotten into playing guitar and relearning theory (was a saxophonist many years ago) because I can hear ever little flaw in someone else's playing and it sometimes takes me away from the live music experience.
nephyril what a burden that is
for some reason I read this in a Russian accent
@@omgvague Same here. Sometimes I manage to get over it in time to enjoy the rest of the performance, but other times...
@@omgvague That must be hard tbh. I have a philosophy that the show is only good if you fuck up something lmao, that moment were you don't even care if the note is perfect because you're feeling it. But I have seem perfect shows that felt just as good, is more like a joke I tell my friends because often perfect performances sound so sterile.
Two Set : "Another roast video"
Actually Two Set : giving professional advice and review to someone who isn't a pro and a bit too mechanical while recognizing the difficulty of some techniques and pointing the qualities and mistakes and honesty when you're at this level of playing
Me : *Takes another bawl of cereals* Good video guys !
Yeah, they set it up like it was going to be a roast, and instead it was just a critique. I thought they were pretty fair, and I appreciated it.
Lol. I was actually eating a bowl of cereals while watching this. Needed to refill my bowl half-way through.
This point is ironic to me, because every time TwoSet says “simmering”
They burn it to a crisp (usually)
But this time, they went directly to “roast”
But they “simmered” the music
If simmering were proffesional advice...

Ahhhh hahahahahaha
I've always loved when TwoSet gives their feedback to violinists. Seeing this for instance has made me think much more consciously about the small details such as breathing before a new phrases, vibrato continuity and doing shifts while maintaining sound quality. It is really helpful tot get these tips on things that would otherwise go unnoticed. As a percussionist and now (I guess) violinist for three years, I'm not feeling that I am able to bring my musicality into my playing due to the huge difference in nature of these instruments, but TwoSet demonstrating their knowledge and sharing it can give me a huge boost in my perception of violin playing and musicality in general. I wish they'd do these kinds of tips more often!
this was really impressive to actually see you guys review someone who wasn’t completely awful. it was really interesting to hear the details of violin playing and what can constitute a good sound as a non-violin player.
thank you twoset for the education & entertainment!!

Exactly what I thought. This guy must be so happy now to have twoset's opinion and hints about his playing!
Completely agree. Don't get me wrong, roasts of actors shredding are funny, but this video is interesting because the stuff they are pointing out is mostly stuff I haven't seen them talk much about before! It's a level above "that bow's not straight".

I appreciate that they’re playful with some of their criticism, serious with others, and give him credit where it’s due. That’s how you approach a controversial subject matter and keep people on your side. Well done boys. I’ve never been particularly interested in the violin, and yet I’m obsessed with these videos.
Absolutely spot on. Their ability to articulate such subtle techniques is fascinating and humbling. I grew up playing the clarinet and had to tolerate some soul crushing violin playing at the high school level. Many years later, I witnessed a professional performance and was moved to tears. It was hard to understand, objectively, why it sounded so much better than what I'd heard before. This video helped open my eyes and ears to what goes into such high level playing. You get the sense that they're just getting started, too. Amazing.
I like how Ben Shapiro playing the violin is a controversial topic
Very well said.
One billion percent agree. I love Shapiro, and love Two Set. You can tell they don't particularly like him, but they are good sports with their critique.
@@joaquimgianini1234 to be fair, it is hard to see past the parts of a person that you severely dislike and recognize what talents they possess outside of whatever causes you grief. I wouldn't say him playing is controversial, just that he is a highly controversial human and everything attached to him is something that many would scrutinize just because they can't stand who he is. It shows a certain amount of maturity to be able to move past that and give someone credit where it is due.

“Intonation doesn’t care about your feelings” is the best thing in the world
As someone who doesn't play, I really appreciate how after making their points they play it themselves to really illustrate it. Made it really clear for someone without a trained ear to understand how his technique was affecting the sound.
Yep, at first I was like “well that sounds nice to me” and then when they play it again with how it could sound improved you can really notice the difference.

"Find a way to be less tense." I don't think Ben is capable of that!!
Lets give ben credit because he is ACTUALLY playing instead of faking it
Do a lot of people fake playing the violin? I'm confused as to why we need to give him credit for being a musician. Lots of people across all professions are musicians. It's not that amazing.
@Bia L you can't even spell. Maybe try crying more.
@@ToxicTerrance
Some people definitely do some faking for UA-cam vids. Which should be no surprise to anyone who has ever been on UA-cam. Or the internet lol.
@@ToxicTerrance for public figures (all professions across), some people tend to perfect their public images by showing how perfect they are in a lot of things. So I guess faking is not a rare thing. It is amazing how our personalities come out through our instruments.
Welcome to the TwoSet community! :)
I wanna take a moment to appreciate twoset this channel. As a non-musician, after watching so many of their videos, I actually learnt at least something, like the names of some composers, (errrrmm if u call this something). And I also like the fact that they would explain the musical mumbo-jumbo in the way that would be easier to understand for non-musicians. Because of them, I have made it a point in which I would want to get myself exposed to classical music since I've never touched any instrument except the recorder... In fact this channel is what makes UA-cam a better place ♥
This is such a nice comment. I feel the exact same thing!
Mumbo Jumbo haha
I’m a rock guitarist and just happened to land on this channel. 2 minutes in and I love these guys and the violin. What a great channel!! So funny, passionate, and oddly engrossing.

He used to be a very good violinist.
I think he's a tad out of practice here.
he also seems nervous about it
we know Shapiro as a commentator, not as a violinist
I know musicians that were great as kids and quit for 10 years and had to start all over, they still had good ears though.
clearly, he chose to focus on a different "career" nowadays
He's a bit rusty that's it
I found this helpful as a very tense player. And also extremely amusing. Thanks, guys!

Andrew Cox ....they are professional violinists , Ben is not , is that a real question !?
@Andrew Cox
It's not a question of time or age. There are 10-year old children who play better than adults.
Ben Shapiro have a very busy life, he plays violin on the side as a hobby. Brett and Eddy are professional violinists. They graduated from a music university, played in orchestra for years, practice every day, tour the world performing live shows, etc... They have much more experience.
This doesn't mean mean he's a bad player (he's actually quite good for a non-professional), it's just that, right now, they play at a higher level than him.
Andrew Cox Yeah we never know , maybe he needs outside perspective on what he should practice more , tho I have a feeling as well that he know where he lacks , he is not a professional, his goal is not to perform like a professional, but to perform as a hobby . Also those remarks and critics are not only made for him , he is just the exemple-case here , there are people that don’t have enough experience to hear or observe their own mistakes, which this video might help , it is also very interesting and educational for the listeners to hear the technical explanation of someone’s performance , cause listener are not always educated enough to spot mistakes or nuances , etc ain’t nothing wrong with this video , so I don’t get why it bothers you ?!
@Andrew Cox He actually mentioned this video in his twitter feed, said he agreed with their critique: twitter.com/benshapiro/status/1256389090502557697?lang=en
@Andrew Cox In terms of time played, they probably have way more. Or at least more consistent and better practice. He's not a professional violinist.
Folks are in the comments talking about how this is nitpicky because Shapiro isnt a pro, but a hobbyist. Do you know how big a compliment it is to your playing to judged to a higher standard than some random dude online playing Flight of the bumblebee or something super fast and bad, despite you both being 'just hobbyists'?
Yeah they could have had a video just putting him on the back saying how good he is, for a hobbyist, and judge with low standards. Instead, they heard he was a decent player and changed their level of critique. Dude's clearly put in work on the violin, he doesn't need pure encouragement to keep going, so you point out flaws because good players correct flaws.
Also, I don't care about the dude, politics, or any of that, I'm just seeing too many "how dare you you nitpick, he isn't a pro!" In the comments, missing the point of critique
Totally agree. If he's playing at that level, on a public platform...he's comfortable enough with it to be critiqued.
He was a concert violinist for a short time before he solidified a career in political media. I think its shows that even if you have reached a high level that if you stop practicing regularly bad habits will creep in. I assume he still plays casually at home but doesn't sit and put in a lot of practice on a set list like you would to prepare for a concert/show performance.
He's built a platform trying to publicly embarrass college students- it actually makes this pretty apt. Fuck him!
this is true in other fields as well, not just music. gotta have that tough love sometimes yaknow haha
@@Mansohuuj The internet is a public forum -- when posted, it becomes fair game to whoever wants to watch, or comment on it. What twoset has done here is a clear and classic example of Fair Use, so there's no reason they shouldn't be able to make this vid, even if the video was just insulting his playing mercilessly (there's an argument with that hypothetical to harassment, but the fair use stands).
If Shapiro wanted to criticize a twoset video on his show, he'd be protected by the same right.
i got the vibe that like they wanted to roast him, but he actually sounded good

Man, I've loved violins since I'm a child. Listening to this, my respect for Eddie and Brett's knowledge and years and YEARS of practice just got higher. It's SO HARD to play violin how it should be, there's so much coordination and technique but ALSO a high level of sensitivity and interpretation
As a non-violin player I have no idea what they're talking about but I'm so interested haha
Same dude hahaha I live vicariously through my violin playing friends.
He seems like an intermediate level player more or less. Like, for someone who violin is like a secondary thing they do, he sounds fine and perfectly musical. But yeah, there's lots of room for work if he really wanted to be a great violinist.
And to think got his start as a violin prodigy when he was a kid...
@@Kylora2112 From what I've seen of his playing when he was young...I wouldn't call him that. I think people tend to use that term too liberally, and often it just means a kid who's "pretty good", or good for their age. Not always, but I see it a lot

Ben is so lucky to get a free private lesson from the inventors of the Ling Ling workout.
In all seriousness though, as an ex-violin player this video shows perfectly the difference between someone who can "play" violin and a professional who makes violin and art form.
The level of expression and subtlety that makes the pros soooo good literally takes years to attain and (for someone like me) is easy to feel like your skill plateaued and you aren't improving.
I think part of it is also just listening to a lot of music and trying to replicate what you hear. It helps.
An “ex-violinist?“ There are no ex-violinists, just violinists who need to practice! .
what is the ling ling workout?
other than practice 40 hours a day.

Their comment on how “the cheap fix to tension on shifts losing the sound is to back off on the bow” totally threw me. I use that exact same line with my trombone students who are learning to overcome tension in slide technique. It always amazes me to learn how technique crosses over between instruments
True indeed! Avoiding unnecessary tension and choosing free movement is so important! Same for pianists actually. Less tension and more free arm movement = better sound.
What do you mean by “tension in slide techniques?”
_The_Bomb if your slide wrist is tense or locked when playing trombone, your speed+accuracy basically disappear. If you can’t move the slide quickly, your legato suffers tremendously. If you carry tension in your wrist, you also have a high chance of jostling the horn when you shift, which causes the mouthpiece to shake, which kills your tone, especially crossing partials. “The cheap fix to dealing with wrist tension on shifts is to just back off on the air to hide those imperfections.” Good trombone technique is actually really similar to how string players move the bow or how good conducting technique flows.
@@ata_5208 conducting is over rated put that on a shirt
