It's a beautiful ballad. I wanted to say, however, that when he appeared on this show, he was not dying. He actually lived for nine years past the date of this performance. Still sad, though.
I am 31 and remember when he died. My Mum and i cried because he was so talented and so bloody proud to be Australian. He was more than most realised. He wasn't just a brilliant pianist and entertainer but songwriter as well. Kids should study his career if they want to make it in the industry. He was brilliant and we, as Aussies, should be dam proud.. I know i am.
I remember Peter Allen from seeing him on TV specials and "I Go To Rio" was the song I always thought of when I thought of him. Then I went to see "The Boy From Oz" on Broadway. Wow, what a life. What a catalog of songs. Now when I think of Peter this is the song I think of. God Bless you Peter Allen, and thank you 😥
He might have left us way too early but at least he left us with these beautiful memories, his music lives on so he lives on. We were lucky to have had this talent in our lives. RIP Peter, thanks for the memories...
Soulful & passionate performance of "Once Before I Go" an example of how Peter Allen could get inside a great song and turn it inside out...Bravo Peter, you are loved and missed!
I cannot choose a favorite, they all make me smile or laugh or cry. He was my favorite but when I played this it felt like his goodbye to those who loved him💗💖
@@mitchellflemings6241 Peter died in June 1992 of throat cancer. He'd not long begun a tour of Australia and needed to cancel for immediate treatment. He had the tumor removed in Australia then returned to the US for treatment. His final perfomance was on Australia Day in Sydney. He died 6 months later :(
Michael Travail...I just discovered this beloved jewel by listening to "Dont Cry Out Loud". I found out he wrote this song about his mother, after his father had shot himself. What awesome lyrics!
Watching mesmerizing Peter Allen performance sung with such extraordinary depth and sensitivity, reminded why back in 70's-80's went to see Peter Allen too many times to count in venues large and small always gave totally captivating performances to full houses, Peter had his own special magic that was his alone, for me nobody compared to this amazing performer and miss his forever...
I remember watching this! Thank you for posting this knockout performance. I had just discovered "mainsream" Peter Allen. I think as he said, he really could be just a quiet singer/songwriter. I cannot believe he was taken at 48 years. So sad. What a loss...and reminder to keep living life! RIP and thank you for the music, Mr. Allen.
I love this song When i saw Ann Margret in person she closed her show with this song by peter allen . i was back stage with Ann . she brought me to tears when she sang this song.i love her and peter allen . R.i p. Peter.💚💚💚💚
Incapable of imitation or duplication A great sensitive talent as a writer and performer Every twitch of his body resonated emotion. Amazing just amazing
Hugh Jackman, who portrayed him on Broadway, in The Boy From Oz, did a great job with it. You can find several of the musical numbers on You tube. BTW, that was Hugh Jackman’s big breakout performance, as a Broadway musical star.
I LOVE this song. I love his voice. I find it so emotional knowing that he eventually died of AIDS and feel like it's a song he wrote when he found out that the end was near but know that's not the case. An incredible entertainer that left us way too soon. I listen to his CD over & over again.
Its funny how you mention cryin. the first time i saw the boy from oz and this song came on i wept like a baby and i was 45! i am so glad that peter was put on this earth. i am, as you say, a very proud australian and i am so very proud of peter allen. he and carol and his other co-writers came up with some truly beautiful memories.
Saw Peter Allen at Radio City, Amazing and saw HJ 5 times including closing night of Boy from Oz!! I know I'll never see anything like that again. He did him proud!!!!!
More than a singer, Peter Allen was a performer, he gave his heart and soul to his audience and we love him for it. I first saw him in a small venue and twice in Radio City Music Hall and in both places, it was an intimate experience.
I was fascinated by him when I was a child and I didn't know why. I'm just now going down a rabbit hole watching performances. I know nothing about him, but I will do some research ❤️
Thank You for the video and it is truly Peter at his finest. Even after so much time has passed he still touches my heart and reminds me of the night he came to my birthday party and sang my favorite song for me. Peter wherever you are the men are hot and the gin is cold and the place is jumpping. Just call me the one who still misses you everyday and never will forget you until I am no longer here.
Beautiful song, and always a treat to hear an artist do his own songs; BUT, I was fortunate to see Hugh Jackman sing this on Broadway in The Boy From Oz (4 times actually) and on that stage, he owned this show stopper.
According to Stephen Maclane's biography, Peter had just lost his partner Greg earlier in the SAME week of this appearance? Peter was booked well in advance and honored his word and did The Tonight Show giving us this tremendous performance. The book is a well wriitten, loving account of Peter's life. Alot of effort went into the book and many of Peter's close friends helped - given credibility to the book. Whether or not this Tonight Show appearance was later in the same week that Greg passed, is not documented. i know this performance was after April 1984 as i taped it with my first VCR. A beautiful song, a beautiful performance by a most talented man who was robbed of life far too soon. Rest in Peace, Mr. Allen.
Imagine walking out on stage performing this song, knowing your riddled with the aids virus and there is no cure. No hope , just rest and vitamins and other people's judgement. This man had a courage few will ever know. Thank God things have changed. Please get tested.
Unforgettable talent, human being and persona I love his influence on my life in regards to music and experience of life, God Bless you Peter Allen, I am an Australian born in Poland what a life and appreciation I have for Australia given me, I love Australian spirit it will never die I'll make sure of it
I used his arrangement for Don't Cry out loud ..1981 all there was at that time was Vocal elimination in the tune of $350 near Universal Studios. What they did was fade the lead vocal out if the mix was in the middle .. Luck I was in the same key and accent ..couldn't tell came out Beautiful
Once before I go, I want you to know that I would do it all again I'm sure I'd make the same mistakes That I could make it through the pains and joys and aches I knew back then I would do it all, I'd do it all again Before I go, I want you to know that I look back with no regrets And when our luck was wearing thin and we were down and out And still came back to win against all bets Now when I look back I still have no regrets And it's so hard to say good-byes When there's so much that's left unspoken in your eyes But unless I spread my wings again, I'm afraid I'll never soar So hang on to the memories and hold me close once more Once more, just once before I go, I want you to know That I have loved you all along and even when we're far apart I only need to feel you're living in my heart and I'll be strong I'll love you just the way I've loved you all along And it's so hard to say good-byes When there's so much that's left unspoken in your eyes But unless I spread my wings again I'm afraid I'll never soar So kiss me for the last time and hold me close once more Once more, just once before I go I want you to know that I have loved you all along And even when we're far apart I only need to feel you're living in my heart and I'll be strong You are the light that shines on me You always were and you'll always be So I had to let you know, just this once Just this once before I go

Its definitely late 1980s or early 1990/91. Peter wrote this song for his 1988 musical Legs Diamond. Plus he'd started to get his hair transplant in this clip. I suppose it could be 86 or 87 too, now that I am looking closer. I met him and became friends with him in late 1988 and honestly it might have been before this.
@pajammypam This is the only appearance by Peter on The Tonight Show, except for his one shot when Joan Rivers was host. Peter appeared on the show as "The Allen Bros" with Carson in the mid 60's from NYC..but no video exists.
What a brave performance from a man who knew he had little time left. We will hold onto the memories, Peter. You can count on that.
Your So So right and on The Johnny "repub " Carson show...

Probably my favorite song written and performed by the great Peter Allen. What a terrible loss to mankind, so young.

This is classic Peter Allen. He could touch your heart or knock your socks off. Sing on my friend.
this song always makes me cry
One of my favourite songs. Told my children this is my last funeral song.
Me too
Saw Peter in concert 4X in the 80's.
Damn fine performer, singer, song writer and just a great person. He left us way too early.
A beautiful soul, taken far too early, who lived in a time when prejudice and ignorance was rife.
I want this song played at my funeral! So emotional! He was like an Australia Elton John...sadly not as appreciated :-(

A very sad loss.
Never heard this ____ wonderful
This song makes me cry.
Still one of my Fav Peter Allen songs/
I never knew Peter had such a vocal rang
Once before I go, I want you to know that I would do it all again
I'm sure I'd make the same mistakes
That I could make it through the pains and joys and aches
I knew back then I would do it all, I'd do it all again
Before I go, I want you to know that I look back with no regrets
And when our luck was wearing thin and we were down and out
And still came back to win against all bets
Now when I look back I still have no regrets
And it's so hard to say good-byes
When there's so much that's left unspoken in your eyes
But unless I spread my wings again, I'm afraid I'll never soar
So hang on to the memories and hold me close once more
Once more, just once before I go, I want you to know
That I have loved you all along and even when we're far apart
I only need to feel you're living in my heart and I'll be strong
I'll love you just the way I've loved you all along
And it's so hard to say good-byes
When there's so much that's left unspoken in your eyes
But unless I spread my wings again I'm afraid I'll never soar
So kiss me for the last time and hold me close once more
Once more, just once before I go
I want you to know that I have loved you all along
And even when we're far apart
I only need to feel you're living in my heart and I'll be strong
You are the light that shines on me
You always were and you'll always be
So I had to let you know, just this once
Just this once before I go
Achingly beautiful. Gets to the core of your heart, soul.
Why do I get so Emotional watching him perform on the Tonight show
+Bruce cause he's amazing ... he simply let ppl into his heart of thinking and quite frankly most didn't deserve it
