When I did my own transmission. I rebuilt it then took it all back apart to double check everything before I put in the work to put it into my vehicle that was 25k ago
Thanks for watching, Steven...While that does consume a lot of extra time, it's actually a very good idea for someone new to the process. By doing it twice, if anything seems different the 2nd time, and upon investigating the difference, you find that the 2nd time around you did it correctly, you will have caught a mistake that you didn't realize you made in the initial assembly. Nice work!
I am, being true to form, going to take credit for the previous videos great performance. I linked it to couple of facebook groups. The content is irrelevant. Everything is always about me. 😉 Still say the voice doesn't match the body...😛 Your vids are without doubt the best on the internetz. Thank you for all the help!
Lots of new parts, he'll be getting a great rebuild. I like the groves cut on the sun-gears for better lubrication and the alto 7-pack 3-4. So the old case w/ low-reverse pitted can be fixed...but gig work would take time and be too expensive versus a new case....I can see it. That cast aluminum at the salvage yard will bring about $7.
I was hoping you would go into greater detail about the center support. There is a narrow sprag and a wide sprag center support. When did they go to the wide sprag and are they interchangeable? Which one do you recommend? Also, I ran into a difference in the reverse input drum. One had a smaller piston (OD) made of steel with lip seals and one had a larger od piston with lip seals. When did they change?
Hi Gloria, thank you for watching! I can do a video dedicated to the center support and discuss the changes and interchange options...Also, there weren't any sprags in the TH350-700R4-4L60E center supports (sprags are dog bone-style one-way clutches), GM only roller clutches. I'll also be doing a dedicated video on Reverse Input drums..Both vids should be on the channel by end of the week. Thanks again!
My transmission and engine were so bad they couldn't save anything Had get that from salvage yard I never had issues However my sister husband car there radatior blew and they had major issues with salvage motor
@nickstransmissions that car got totaled from truck hitting rear end in snow Suspension was twisted Loved that car cause had race seat and belt besides other things It would stop in 50 feet I did it when deer ran out in front of me, Some of the new cars are junk with all government mandates
Agree - technologies that aren't fully mature are being rushed into these new vehicles and lots of recalls, failures and customer pain points have been the result.
Why the K case? Because it's what was available...Not sure about your area but here 700R4 cases and complete cores are very difficult to find, especially intact (there's usually one or two important things missing, like speedo housings, fasteners or hold-down clamps for the aux vb-to-pump feed pipe, governors, etc... Thanks for watching, 1320pass.
Thanks for posting these videos. I have a hard question. I had my 700r4 rebuilt in 2010-11. The guy who rebuilt it said he put a check ball in that caused it to down shift from second into first hard. Do you have any idea what check ball that would be?
You're welcome and thank you for watching. That is a hard/good question...I don't know of any location where placement of a check ball would make an otherwise normal 2-1 downshift feel harder/firm. Did he say what the rationale for doing this was? Harsh 2-1 shift would put some undue stress on the gear train and in particular the low roller one-way clutch. Sorry that I can't be of more help there but drawing a blank..If I think of anything I'll let you know...That said, your valve body should have three check balls if it's an early, non-auxiliary valve body type unit or two check balls in the valve body if it's a later aux valve body unit. For the case, you'd have a check ball at the bathtub location closest to the selector shaft for early non-aux VBs but no check ball there if the unit is an aux-VB style 700R4. In 1993, a Low Reverse check ball was added to the valve body - it was that year only.
@@nickstransmissions this is a 83 Z28. It was 2010 roughly. I found him on marketplace and he did a good job. I gave him extra to beef it up. Not sure exactly what he did. I don’t drive it much but we will see. I’ve rebuilt the motor and I’m picking up a used 700 and rebuild it to handle about 500 hp. Using your suggestions. Thanks again
Gotcha, yea hard to say but you'll know once you get into the unit..It may be helpful to buy the ATSG Check Ball book for domestic transmissions...Has all of the older GM, Ford and Dodge 2,3 and 4-speed transmissions' check ball locations and what they are/what they do so you can compare what you see in your trans to the factory check ball configuration.
To my knowledge, the governor and (I think) the primary spring between the throttle valve sleeve/plunger and throttle boost valve. It's been ages since I rebuilt a diesel 700R4 so don't quite remember 100%.
Also I have a 1984 suburban with the 6.2 the trany that is on it is a 1shm from what I get is a 91 4.3 application u think I should rebuild it or try and find a diesel 700r4
Go to ATSG (Automatic Transmission Service Group) website and download the manual for the 700R4 (I think it's listed under 4L60 1982-1986, if you're working on the 1986) though you can also purchase the 1987-1993 manual for the 4L60 and get all the same info plus additional specs not found in the 1982-1986 manual. Rebuild kits can be found on eBay, transpartswarehouse.com - those are the two best places to find all inclusive kits...You can also buy a Rostra Wiring Harness from Transparts Warehouse - just let them know what year 700R4 you're working on and they'll get you what you need.
Thanks for ur help 1 more question have u seen a gas 700r4 on a 6.2 diesel before ? Do u think its worth building the one I have it is a k case and a 91 model so I should have all updates already I’m just not sure if i get it rebuilt and it burns up again
Good video and thank u for teaching.
Thank you, Bobby!

The 700-4r is a good transmission with a few upgrades.
Yep, definitely better than some give it credit for...Thank you for watching, Michael.

Had get that from salvage yard

However my sister husband car there radatior blew and they had major issues with salvage motor
Thanks for watching, Matthew...Sounds like you had some good luck with the junkyard transmission.

Suspension was twisted
Loved that car cause had race seat and belt besides other things

Which 2-4 band are you using?
Hi David, it's Alto's wide red band.
Why the K case? Appears to be a regular 86-up case with aux VB.
