Beautiful song. He's the grandson of immigrants. This is the performance from a movie he did called The Jazz Singer. I think it was written for the movie, as it's about an immigrant family. Neil Diamond has written so many great songs. Glad you loved it. Enjoyed your reaction. All the best.

l grew up on neil diamond and even seen him live in concert with my folks when l was 16 also seen the movie the jazz singer which this song be from with my mom in the theater when l was 14 and now has a few of his albums on cd as well as the jazz singer on dvd

Hi Vee! The music video that you watched was actually the last scene in the movie THE JAZZ SINGER. He played the son of a religious father who wanted him to sing only religious music. He wanted to sing his own music and his father disowned him when he married someone from a different religion. At the end of the movie his father finally accepts his son's dreams and goes to his concert with the new wife to see him perform.

Not just the son of a religious father, they were of the Jewish faith, and Neil's character's father was a "cantor" who sings and leads the congregation in prayer by singing them. It's very beautiful. His father (played by Sir Lawrence Olivier) wanted Neil's character to become a cantor as well. But he struggled with that and really wanted to be just a singer, as he is doing in this last scene of the movie. His father disapproves of that decision and they have a bit of a falling out, but eventually realizes it's what his son wants. I love this last scene as it show his father in the audience (sitting next to Lucy Arnaz who is the real life daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz who were the stars of the "I LOVE LUCY" TV show, who plays Neil's character's wife in the movie. GREAT movie!
