This is '60s pop music at it's finest - and there are plenty more from them to check out - "Daydream Believer," "Last Train to Clarksville," "Mary, Mary," "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You," "The Girl Th at I Knew Somewhere" - great band.

The one who is singing this song, Micky Dolenz, really shows off his abilities in the song "Goin' Down", which he reportedly did in a single take in the studio.

The Monkees were a "made for TV" band (a campy TV series called "The Monkees"), but eventually they became a real band. They actually had a lot of awesome music including "I'm a Believer" (future artists have covered this song years later. Smashmouth (late 90s band) had a pretty good rockin' cover too!).
Other songs you should check out by The Monkees - all of them? 😅 (Last Train to Clarksville, Daydream Believer, Words, I'm Not Your Stepping Stone, Mary Mary, etc.)

"Last Train to Clarksville", "I'm a Believer" (written by Neil Diamond), "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You" (written by Neil Diamond), "Valleri", "Pleasant Valley Sunday", & "Daydream Believer". "I'm A Believer"(1967) went to number one on the charts. It was written by Rock Superstar Legend and singer/songwriter Neil Diamond. He wrote 3 hits for them besides this song. He also wrote "A Little Bit of Me and a Little Bit of You" (1967) #2 on the charts, and "Look Out Here Comes Tomorrow" (1966). #

This group changes depending on who is singing lead. Micky (drummer) gets the rock songs, Davy (little British guy) gets the love songs and Mike, (guitar) tends toward country. Mickey Dolenz, Peter Tork, Mike Nesmith, and Davey Jones. Jokingly called "the Pre-Fab Four" because they were brought together to play a band in a TV show. But they were real musicians, and turned into a real band. And they were amazing. Unfortunately, Peter Tork and Davey Jones are no longer with us but Mickey still occasionally performs. Mike Nesmith comes from money (his mom invented Liquid Paper, I kid you not) so he doesn't actually need to perform, but you see him out and about occasionally too.

The Monkeys were a “made for tv” band, meant to counteract the wave of Beatlemania that was sweeping America in the ‘60’s. Due to their popularity, they went on to become an actual band, making more songs and even going out on tours. The lead singer and drummer was Mickey Dolenz, the bass was Mike Nesmith, the tambourine was Davy Jones, and the organist was Peter Tork. (If I remember right.)

@@plaidmoon5642 One of the things that always bothered me was how most people (even today) dismiss the Monkees as just actors pretending to be a band and "didn't know how to even play their own instruments." Actually, Peter played several instruments before the show and was part of the folk music scene in Greenwich Village. David was a drummer and solo singer before the show (he was the one who taught Mickey how to play the drums when the producers thought Davy would "look" better front and center). David also already had a solo album out before hand when he was around 16. Mickey had been in a previous band as a lead singer, played guitar, and had already written several songs (later writing some of the songs performed by the Monkees). Mike was in several bands before and had a few singles released under the name Michael Blessing. It was just for some crazy reason that the producer thought (at least for the first season) that other musicians should play all the instruments for the recordings.

By the way, when they started having hits, they got asked to do tours. The problem was they didn’t know how to play the instruments except one of them. So the group buckled down and learned to play so they could go on the road. I was lucky to see them in the 90s when they were doing a revival tour.

Thank you for your reaction! I was 7 years old when I first heard 'The Monkee's' on the radio. (They had a goofy TV show but I wasn't watching TV at that time.) I was at a store with my mother and saw a Teen Beat or some such magazine at the checkout stand and asked her to buy it for me. Rushed over to my 7 year old girlfriends house and she had the same magazine. The Monkee's were a hit with the pre-teen and teenagers. It's fun to realize their songs are classic all those years later!

So another great dive into 60's pop. Bubble gum music we used to call it. So if you listen to "Daydream Believer", you will find out that John Stewart of the Kingston Trio actually wrote that song. the Monkees took it to the charts. I installed Satellite dishes in Marin county years ago. One day I got the work order to install a dish for John Stewart in Novato CA. After entering his home, he walked me thru several rooms. As we went up stairs, I saw gold records on the wall. One was for "Daydream Believer". I asked him about that song, and how I grew up with the Monkees on TV. He chuckled, and told that one songs royalties bought him several homes. Amazing man. Amazing voice. He sang Gold with Stevie Nicks. Love you both. Peace.

The guy on the right is the singer/drummer/percussionist, Micky Dolenz. He was a child star and had a TV show in the 50s, Circus Boy. He was the one I had a crush on! The guy next to him, Davy Jones, was a stage star as a child in England. Most of the girls had the crush on him! David Bowie (born David Jones) had to come up with a new name because Davy was already using it :-) Peter Tork, next to Davy, was the cute, sweet, quiet shy one. On the left is Michael Nesmith, he's from Texas and his mom invented Liquid Paper. He had the idea of joining music with video, and was the catalyst behind MTV, but he decided he didn't want to run a TV network. Micky and Michael are the only two left of the Monkees, and they recently retired from touring.

A great group of musicians and singers brought together for a tv show. Unfortunately, they weren’t allowed to play the instruments on their records. It was great slapstick comedy with outstanding hit songs. Fun fact: John Lennon loved their show, matched his fun, witty sense of humor❤️❤️❤️

That's not quite true. The Monkees didn't play instruments on their first two albums but they threatened to quit the show so their producers allowed them to play most (but not all) of the music on their later albums.

I got to see this lead singer, Micky Dolenz, in person at a golf course back in the 70s. He was finishing up at the 18th hole (Alice Cooper was playing right behind him). I had my 8mm home movie camera with me, and Micky pointed at it and said, "Ah, motion pictures!"

The song ''I'm a believer'' by The Monkees was part of the soundtrack of the animated movie ''Shrek'' of 2004... for those of us who were born in the 90s it is instantly recognizable!! I had english language classes in early years of high school and we analized lyrics of songs. There was a picture of The Monkees in our class manual and one of the musicians (the drummer) was hanging upside down from a three... it was funny for us and didn't understand why. Then our teacher said ''that's it! they are The Monkees!'' haha greetins from Argentina

I have a little story about the Monkees. When still in high school, my friends mother bought tickets for us to go to their concert. We were all excited. But when the concert started and their ‘warm up’ band came on stage, my whole world changed at that moment. There are no words to describe the feeling that came over me. It’s like I grew up on just a matter of minutes. Their warm up band was The 5th Dimension!!! That’s before they really became famous. I had never even heard of them. But oh my goodness!! I was totally spellbound!! I told my friend right then, that they were going to make it big! It’s like I went from a giddy teenage girl into a more classy young woman. After seeing and hearing them, my whole world changed. And when the Monkees came on stage, I was really disappointed. That kind of music was no longer mine. I longed for more 5th Dimension!! Hearing and seeing them in person blew my mind!!! Can you even imagine?? I’m so glad my parents raised me to appreciate GOOD music. As a matter of fact, my dad’s favorite singer was always Nat King Cole. As in yesteryear as it is today, great music has no color. If music touches your soul, then it’s good. Not that it matters, but I’m a 71 year old white lady. Hope y’all have a great day. And thanks for all the great reactions. 👍

The Monkees started out as a fictional pop group for a TV series titled "The Monkees" back in 1966-1970. Neil Diamond (who was more of a songwriter back in the day and before he splashed onto the scene w/ "Solitary Man" and "Cherry Cherry" in 1966) was asked to write a pop tune for the show. "I'm A Believer" became a huge hit world wide selling over 10 million singles, which were called 45's. They were a small vinyl record w/only two songs. Those were my generations "CD" .. 😎. Neil had also written "A Little Bit Me. A Little Bit You" in 1967.

There are songs that some people wouldn't think of mentioning because they didn't get any air play on the radio. They had plenty of well known hits, but here's some you'd probably like if you'd listen them, "Sweet Young Thing", "You Just May Be The One", "She", "Randy Scouse Git" and "For Pete's Sake". They were truly a treasure.
