The reasons why Vietnam belongs to Southeast Asia: geographical location, climate, economic region. Reasons why Vietnam belongs to East Asia: culture, traditional costumes, people, society, politics, most of their history, writing (kanji, chu nom, romaji-latin are three types) script in Vietnam), although tomaji is used, it does not mean that romaji is considered unique, it is only used a lot and is common, so don't misunderstand, a lot of Vietnamese people pay attention to kanji and nom... Vietnam is special, this country is very impressive.
In term of climate, North Vietnam is much different. Only region of SEA is subtropical with 4 seasons. Unless Vietnam had reached to the South, the Northern part would have been absolutely considered as East Asia
Your culture is not East Asian. I dun see the same discipline and intensity in Vietnamese. Vietnamese dun look East Asians. Most of you are small and short, very typical southeast Asian. Well is it really that important lol Vietnam is Vietnam they have thier own unique culture and stuff. Even countries in East Asia have differences in many things since hisotry is just too complex. Kudos to quality videos tho!
A very thoughtful video. The only flaw l noticed, was in stating that the Latin alphabet was introduced by the French. It was actually introduced by the Portuguese. Vietnam does actually have Theravada, but Mahayana dominates most of the country. In many ways, we can see Vietnam as a sponge, that has soaked up influences from many cultures and nations.
To those who say Southern Vietnam is more influenced by SEA culture than the North, thats not true. There are many more Hoa people (VNese people of full or partial Han Chinese ancestry) living in the South than the North. The Hoa people arent considered an ethnic minority because they share many similarities to the Vietnamese culture. There is a whole populated district 5 in HCMC that consists mostly of Hoa people. The Hoa people scatter across many Southern Vietnam regions but in the North you can only find a few of them in Bac Giang and Quang Ninh. Being borned and raised in HCM city with my mother being Hoa as her grandfather migrated from Guangzhou to Vietnam at the end of the Qing Dynasty, I can attest that the South belongs to the East Asian cultural sphere as much as the the North does. There are indeed some remnants of the Champa civilization in Middle Vietnam and Mekong Delta regions and more Khmer people live in the South than in the North, but the Khmers only take up 1,37% of Vietnamese population. Most of Southern Vietnamese are Kinh people who originally came from the North and developed a different dialect overtime. Very rarely there is someone borned from Khmer-Kinh parents because the Khmers mostly marry their own kind. When we talk about cultural sphere, its about the arts, traditions, cuisine, and literature and only very small groups of people in Southern Vietnam celebrate anything related to SEA cultural. Whereas most of the major festivals, traditions and buildings in the South are overwhemingly influenced by East Asian culture. In fact, you can even find much more French influence in HCMC and Da Lat than SEA culture.
You say "Southeast Asian" as if it's this unified, monolithic culture when they can be vastly different from each other. If you Viets look down on SEA so much, then leave ASEAN
Southeast Asia in the Mekong River Vietnam is very strong, they are more easily active than the North, the Cham community here is very active in Islam, which is not seen in the North of Vietnam
I’m glad you made this video, I was offended when people like my ap world history teacher categorizes Vietnam as theverada who uses Indic scripts because they are usually categorize as southeast Asian
1. Culturally, Vietnam is Sinospheric as it belongs to Sinosphere (East Asian Cultural Sphere). Vietnamese people had been being affected by Confucism and Daoism, they used to use Hantu (Chinese script, known as Hanja in Korean and Kanji in Japanese) to write their language, their traditional costumes (aodai, aonguthan, aotuthan, aonhatbinh, aogiaolinh) are all fairly similar to other Sinospheric countries. Sinospheric countries use moon calendar, share same festivals and their vocabularies are similar as well. Meanwhile, the rest of mainland SE Asia is culturally affected by India. 2. Geographically, Vietnam is actually Southeast Asian. Despite that, Northern Vietnam’s climate has many similarities with the climate of southern China and can be said to be rather colder than the rest of the SEA. There were records of winter snowfall in most of the region until the 13th century, today the extent of snowfall has narrowed to the northwest.
Didn't you guys pay attention to the detail he pointed out? If Vietnam didn't have the southward expansion and remained only the northern part, then Vietnam could have been part of east asia geographically, too. The original Vietnamese stock from the north with the influence of the 1000 years under the different Chinese dynasties eat talk and study just like east asians. The video clearly pointed out that belief system, education, and family structure clearly follow Confucius just like China Japan, and Korea. Vietnamese is even closer to china in term of langue features for being tonal, where korean and Japanese are not. Vietnamese and Chinese languages is SVO: Subject Verb Object. Where as korean and Japanese are SOV: Subject Object Verb. Clearly Vietnam without the southern expansion is east asian, period. However after gaining independence in 10th century, the original stock intermarried native central and south Vietnamese such as champa..khemer ( Cambodian). So because of this, central and southern Vietnamese have south east asian admixtures. You can tell this fact by looking at northern viets. They look more like people from honghong or quangxi. Where as central and southern viets still look east asians but some parts looked mixed, giving them a distinct appearance. The sense that Vietnamese feel they also part of southeast asians because of the southern expansion and the intermarriage. Political and geographical labeling don't matter much because if you look at the case of white Americans, they are called Americans but they are genetically European. So just like the author of this video said Vietnamese are east asians.
That's why Sinosphere is the better term for the cultural sphere than East Asia. Mongolia is technically East Asian but cultural wise they are not Sinophere except sinicized Inner Mongolia in China. Vietnam on other hand is part of Sinosphere because heavily sinicized, even ultra nationalist Vietnamese hate it, they can't run away from reality that Vietnam even more sinicized than Korea and Japan.
@@faustinuskaryadi6610 that is true. Although it is the most correct term to describe the vietnam situation a lot ò people are not familiar with it, unfortunately. They are so used to the recent geopolitical terms such as east asia or south east asians...ect. But yeah Vietnam is heavily influenced by china. That is just fact. I am Vietnamese myself and i agree. I actually got 15% Han genetics from my grandma traced back to Henan...and 85% Vietnamese, which my dad's side traced back to central Vietnam.
@@MyMelody5 Or you wish that Vietnam wants to claim to be part of east asia. Tourists from china, japan, korea see the chinese influence in Vietnam. They notice the similarities of certain Vietnamese cultural components similar to theirs such as the use of chopsticks, Confucius in family structure. Politically you think japan korea feel superior to Vietnamese that is why they don't care? That is understandable. Japanese felt superior to the whole Asia back in WW2 anyway. Its not new. Even Japanese and Koreans don't even like each other. And then Chinese hate Japanese. It is a mess. However more and more koreans and Japanese want to live in Vietnam for it is cheaper and explore new things. There is more to Vietnamese culture than just the sinosphere influence.

I am a black lay Sinologist. Been interested in China and the Far East because of that legend (Bruce Lee 李小龙), who hit and left our world ever so shortly. Interestingly, I also view Vietnam as somewhat as close to China as it is to the South East. The Viet people are even mentioned in Chinese Classics that date back to the 1st and 2nd Century AD. And a Vietnamese Genius, Master Nguyễn An (阮安) was majorly involved in the architecture and building Forbidden City in Beijing during the Ming (明) dynasty. Fascinating and informative video - Thanks for sharing
@Miranda lambert According wiki , history of forbidden city main architects were Cao Din, Nguyen An ( a Vietnamese eunuch), Kuai Xiang, Lu Xiang and others. So Wiki lies?
@Miranda lambert First off, the lady clearly said he participated in the design and construction. She did not say it was only him. Eunuch was invented by Chinese in the first place if my memory serves me right. It's fair to say thousands of Chinese eunuches way before him and only one Anam eunuch who was forced it was much better than voluntary compared to Chinese eunuch. In the old time, Chinese were stronger and colonized weaker and smaller Vietnam and tried so hard to assimilate. And that's what it was in the course of history. We are still standing. Han Chinese successfully assimilated lots of tribes in China but it failed terribly for 1000 years. We know you're stronger economically and military but we still have our country, language unlike Southern tribes Teo Chew, Cantonese, Hai Nan were totally assimilated forced to speak Mandarin. Regarding borrowing, we all borrow from somewhere to progress. Japan, Korea borrow. China is not an exception. Don't tell me China doesn't copy from western military technologies, Russian spaceship, submarine, western skyscrapers, expressway, airports, western medical diagnostics and surgies. Doesn't China today wear western clothing style in daily activities?
don't worry , modern China has no interest in invading Vietnam, we turn to be people's friend and make money by trading with them, but you have to say once somone took a territory from others it would be very difficult for the previous owner to take it back , the world is still a black Forest and, only the strong ones voice and wishes could be heard

I’ve been wondering that myself. Besides geography and culture. One thing that separate Mongolians and East Asians is they eat dairy product such as cheese, yogurt, and horse milk alcoholic drink called airag or kumis. So, dairy in their diet makes them more Central Asian.
@@Will-sq3ip Some other East Asians eat dairy products too, like how Tibetans also have lots of cheese and milk in their diet. And Vietnamese people eat flan, plus southern Chinese food often has cream or cheese in it too (idk if that's from British influence though)
@@OboeWhizzy I didn’t know Tibetans dairy. I think dairy in East Asian cuisine is kind of recent thing even for a few centuries. Brought in by Western influence. Today, East Asians do eat dairy but not in the more traditional Asian cooking. In fact, I use coconut milk instead (animal) milk because my parents prefer that way, both taste and texture.
@@Will-sq3ip Yeah Tibetans consume a lot of dairy because of the climate they live in and the difficulty of growing crops during some parts of the year. Tibetans mostly consume dairy from bovine livestock and goats/sheep, and they have cream, cheese, and milk in their dishes and drinks! (Disclaimer: I'm not Mongolian myself! But my parents are from a part of China with a large Mongolian population and grew up with lots of classmates and teachers of Mongolian descent) My idea for why Mongolians could be considered a central Asian country instead of East Asian is that it's heavily influenced by Russia, and has adopted Cyrillic script for its language rather than Mongolian script which is only used in Inner Mongolia (part of China). In that regard, I'd say it could be considered similar to a country like Kazakhstan. I guess the difference is that most central Asian countries are Muslim, whereas Mongolia is not. That would put it closer to the Sinosphere or Buddhist-inspired East Asian countries. Geographically, Mongolia also has more similarities with central Asia. It's mostly desert and grassland, and typically has a cold and arid climate, unlike the other East Asian countries. Mongolians also farm and domesticate animals similarly to other central Asian cultures (maybe? I'm not super sure on this). But historically, Mongolia was more often a part of various Chinese empires and kingdoms than independent or a part of Russia. So that would also bring it closer to being East Asian.
There is no such a thing as typical Southeast Asian culture or language. People in this region are extremely diverse. Therefore one cannot say Vietnamese culture is Southeast Asian, but Vietnam IS a Southeast Asian country, despite what influences on her culture.

I am Chinese and I identify with Vietnam's East Asian identity. Because many cultures in Vietnam are similar to China, and the national spirit, the will to fight is strong, if you give Vietnam time, it is a small matter to surpass other countries in Southeast Asia. Sooner or later, Vietnam will develop into a country like Japan and South Korea. These are things that other Southeast Asian countries cannot do, it is a cultural attribute that predestines them!
To be developed like Japan or South Korea, all needed is big cities and large working population. North America or European countries don't have Chinese influence but they have large cities.

“Please leave a comment for the algorithm” hahahahha Not until I’ve moved outside of the region did this topic become relevant in my search to assert my own identity. Previously, I’ve managed to curb nationalism, and if needed I only thought of the Vietnamese as simply Vietnamese, maybe sometimes (rarely) as East Asians for its cultural evidences, also perhaps because contemporary Vietnam presented a ton of cultural imports from the ‘big three’ (Chinese-languages period dramas and literature, Korean drama and music, and Japanese anime, video games, and manga were all ubiquitous in our cultural lives), our mental images and linkages were being built up in my psych. Southeast Asia was only personally associated with the ASEAN, and there’s such little relevance in my life to the point that the name meant nothing else other than a mere political affiliation. So yes, the Vietnamese people (người Kinh), along with their country, Vietnam, were East Asian, per my answer, whenever the topic got brought up, prior to being told repeatedly we were Southeast Asian by Westerners, who proceeded to greet me in the Thai way and talked to me about Thailand, all of which weirded the fuck out of me. Then I realized the ramifications of this oversimplified grouping of countries and peoples, the effects it has on outsiders’ understandings, attitude, and even possible investment interests. I hope the intricacies finally got out into people’s heads, that reducing countries and peoples to nuanced simplistic words deducts the overall picture from your view and undermines peoples’ own identification of themselves, and I thank you for an extensive research, respectful insights, and clear presentation, even though some small details can be further discussed, clarified, or corrected. Hopefully the peoples of Vietnam will one day straighten themselves out, and be able to put their (our) own unique identity onto the world, which will undoubtedly have to recognize us as we are.
Interesting to hear your views, thank you. By the way, wouldn't you say that combining different cultures creates a new unique culture of its own anyway? Like how American culture is it's own separate thing but is really just a combination of British, German, Spanish/Mexican and Carribbean culture. Vietnamese people and culture seen quite unique to me, but I'm not Vietnamese and don't know enough about the culture to say for certain. So I'm not saying either way, only positing a question. What I do know is that British culture was just a combination of French/European culture and Viking/Scandanavian culture but is clearly its own thing now, since culture drifts and changes over time and gains new character. Perhaps that is why I find Vietnam interesting even though I'm not Vietnamese and don't live in Vietnam.

Actually, the origin of the people is not so important, but the important thing is that the Vietnamese have been annexed by China for over 1000 years and are influenced by Confucianism. In fact, the East Asian countries are also divided into many ethnic groups, but they have one thing in common, they are developed by Confucianism and by a very important idea of Confucius that is "Only the learning path can help people rise up" . And Vietnam is no exception if you come to Vietnam you will see their culture such as traditional costumes, using lunar days and celebrating lunar new year, festivals, using a lot of kanji adapted words..., ant architecture: temples, pagodas, rural houses... ,education, textbooks, exams, university exams with subjects like Chinese "Gao Kao"..., so in Vietnam they only have a position in Southeast Asia while culture, education, lifestyle ... are considered East Asians.

Great insights! Culturally, Vietnam always seemed to me like a cousin to Korea. In some instances such as with cuisine (minus the tropical and French influences), Vietnamese has felt even more familiar than Chinese cuisine.
i like korean food too. I was so proud of our cuisine over western and chinese which have too much oil. Korean food store start to open widely in Vietnam.Personally, i feel its familiar and easy to taste. In a meal we must have something sour to balance with meat, egg or fish, we use "dưa muối" or "cà muối". In Korea restaurant, they bring kimchi and the sour chilli soup which make me very comfortable when use it with rice
Absolutely, true @@ThanhNguyen-xf9dl! Although Cantonese cuisine is generally less oily than many other regions, Chinese cuisine is generally heavier than Korean and Vietnamese cuisines. A well-made beef broth is a hallmark for both Korean and Vietnamese cuisines, as are two of the best marinated grilled meats! When whenever I dine at a Vietnamese restaurant, I find it hard to pass up on ordering Vietnamese Lemongrass Grilled Beef or Pork, which are like aromatic versions of Korean Beef or Pork Gal-bi. Another favorite is Bánh Xèo, which is thinner and crisp parallel to Korean Jeon that we make at home (thinner and crisp-edged versus the chunky, rustic traditional versions).
Vietnam and SK are completely different ethnically and culturally. The Vietnamese resemble the Southern Chinese. The height difference between SK and Vietnam is more than 10CM.
Almost like a continuum. Next Thailand would be slightly less East Asian and slightly more SEAsian as well compared to Vietnam. I would more than be happy to use the term Northeast Asia for China, the Koreas, Japan, Mongolia and Taiwan instead of East Asia. The term East Asia should encompass both Northeast and Southeast Asia.
Not really; there is a pretty wide gulf of difference in terms of traditional philosophies, foreign influences in language, writing, etc. with Thailand that puts Vietnam firmly in East Asia culturally and Thailand firmly outside of it

It doesn't matter if Vietnam is Southeast Asia or East Asia. Geographically, Vietnam is a country in Southeast Asia, but culturally it is heavily influenced by China, but Vietnam also has its own cultural features that are somewhat similar to the East Asian region. South Asia. Asia, it can be said that Vietnam is a combination of East Asia and Southeast Asia. I also want to confirm one more thing for some people who still think that Vietnam is a part of China, Vietnam has been dominated by Chinese dynasties for more than 1000 years, greatly influenced. But Vietnam has always struggled for independence and never accepted to be assimilated by China. Vietnam is Vietnam and Chinese is Chinese, don't ever think Vietnamese and Chinese are one. I have always respected the friendship between these two countries before (after WW2) but after the Sino-Vietnamese war in 1979, it changed my view.
Only the south of Vietnam has many cultures of Southeast Asians, and the north of Vietnam never, try to come to Vietnam and you will see the difference.

My dad has that yellow peach east Asian skin while my mom is kinda light brown tan. I notice my skin is a mix, but I look like a different color in different lighting. My brother doesn't look similar to me My DNA relatives also usually are basically 100% of an ethnicity (China, Korea, Japan, etc.), like me. Though most of my DNA relatives from Thailand are part Chinese (30-100%, the rest being "indonesian, thai, khmer, and myanmar etc" or ~30% Chinese Dai). That percentage goes for my other ethnic relatives (laos, cambodia,hk,indonesian, etc.) With a wide percentage split like that. I think it's true cause the Thai kpop idols I see, such Minnie from (G)I-DLE and Ten from NCT identify as Thai but are Chinese. I don't think Lisa from Blackpink is Chinese though 23andMe gets more accurate the more people use it. I notice east Asia, especially north, have a taller elegant look to them. Idk how to describe. I consider china being the main and the surrounding smaller countries as offshoots btw, cause it's the biggest country middle and in population. I consider vietnam a very diverse nation (ethnic groups, species, landscapes, etc.) and I dont think that's necessarily a bad thing. That goes for other countries surrounding china too. Though Chinese, Korean, and Japanese people look similar, I notice Vietnamese have a wider separation of looks from them. I consider vietnam the east Asian-influenced country in Southeast Asia I also watch other videos regarding ASEAN, and some comments say Vietnam is east asian, so why are they included in the video? But east asian people see Vietnam as southeast asian. So I feel like have an identity crisis, and maybe other Vietnamese people feel the same way too

Hello! A Vietnamese here, thank you for your extensive summary of Vietnams affair with this. I have to say that the terms "East Asia" and "Southeast Asia" themselves span so many cultural regions specific to provinces and smaller cities/villages, that for example, even though Vietnam is geographically Southeast Asia, Kinh Viet/Vietnamese culture has largely been Sinicized, thus makes us more "East Asian", but Viets who live further down Central and South regions will grow up interacting with significant Malayo-Austronesian cultural elements, due to the concentration of our Austronesian minor ethnic groups there, like Cham people. You could say some South Vietnam provinces/autonomous regions are more "Southeast Asian". It depends, just as how it is more accurate to classify Mongolia, Korea, Japan + its occupied islands and part of Northern China as Northeast Asia due to a more specific cultural sphere there. After all, it doesn't matter to me that Vietnam has to be either East or Southeast Asian, but it does matter that Viets know how to identify their unique mix of cultures and not mistake our identities for anything else. :)
Vietnamese are used to be the ethnic group in South China just like the Tai ethnicity from Thailand and Laos, but they’re different to the Vietnam because their culture has Indian influenced. Vietnam in the ancient times used to be Dong Son culture which practices Animalism but got heavily influenced Chinese culture due to 1000 years by the Han Dynasties. Vietnam gained independence after the Ming dynasty invaded to their land. They migrated down to South East Asia and took down the Champa and Khmer empire land. Yet Vietnamese traditional clothing Ao Dai has a bit of Indian influence to the Champa clothings but Sinosphere, not heavily Indian influenced yet, mostly in the Nguyen Dynasty Era. The difference between the North and South Vietnam is both are Sinosphere but in the Northern Vietnam are more Chinese influenced than the Southern Vietnam. The Southern Vietnam has mixed influenced culture with French, Indian (Cham and Khmer), and Chinese through musics, foods, clothings and architectures because due to many ethnicities living in Vietnam. That’s what makes Vietnam a unique culture in South East Asia!
There are Champa and Khmer ethnic minorities in Vietnam whom aren't able to differentiate between Vietnamese culture and Chinese one , hence they mistake Indianized culture as root for Vietnamese rather than Sinosphere-influnenced . Even to some extent using the term Mon-khmer (refering to mainland SEA people) to prescribe Vietnamese origin as they were Hindus or Theravada Buddhist , even Muslim , which clearly at 1st glance they aren't . It would be concise that they are refering to aboriginal inhabitants whom had always resided within the Red River Delta region before Viet people migrated there The Vietnamese' ancestors were inhabitants in the now Southern China region , but throughtout Chinese expansion (refering to the Qin Shihuang dysnasty that started the campaign) , many tribes were forced out of the region , Ouyue and Louyue were the first to migrate to the Red River Delta region and established the Van Lang empire . The Vietnamese conquest starts from here , going through mostly defending their territory , being annexed and reclaimed , to then have its' own southern expansion , making the country stretched as long as today , curving the natural borderline which are protected by mountains from its' neighbor
Lie. The Vietnamese ancestry didnt migrate anywhere else. They originated from western red river delta, hoa Binh hanoi thanh hoa, not southern china Vietnamese don't have Chinese blood.
@@hermannboyen5392 they don't , what are you referring to ? @@hermannboyen5392 Who claim Vietnamese have Chinese blood? It's more like Chinese refuse to acknowledge where Ouy Yue territory was. We, Yue got pushed South by Han ppl. Yue and Han are 2 different ppl. More like a lot of Yue ppl in South China got assimilated into Chinese culture and thought they were Han. Vietnam is Southeast Asia. The argument for Chinese culture would mean America is Europe because they share the same language as UK, government, culture, religion and food. Any Chinese influence in architecture and customs were enforced over 1000 years of Chinese oppression yet the people still retained their independence. And what of Thailand and Indonesia where the ethnic Chinese population is the majority? I think you are downplaying the extent of Chinese influences because almost every east and southeast Asian country has heavy Chinese migration yet all those countries still retain their identity just like Vietnam. To put it bluntly, go by geography to define a country, not their sphere of culture. Otherwise, the same argument can be said with every country south of America-same language, customs, food and religion-even though we know they are each different and unique. In a way, I wish we were all the same so we all get along but it is our differences that make us grow. Peace out.
I agree. Even though Vietnamese culture is similar to other cultures in East Asia and is part of Sinosphere, its culture is still one of the many diverse South East Asian cultures and adds diversity to it. In my view South East Asian culture is defined as any culture situated in South East Asia no matter what influences it has. Also East Asian culture isn't synonymous to Sinosphere culture because Mongolia is in East Asia but not included in Sinosphere culture
Omg Tysm for this answer. I’m viet American and I never understood who I was. I always assumed Vietnam was East Asian bc the culture was so similar to China but then now it’s technically Southeast Asia but we don’t really fit in anywhere

For me personally... I think Vietnam’s cultural characteristics are very close to Chinese, this is me speaking as an ABC. I find that Japans culture characteristic the most different out of this group of countries: China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. And I understand is it due to factors in history.... hmm I think I will not get into that but Japan basically decided that after seeing China lose the Opium war with Britain and conflicts with other western powers they decided to adopt many Western components into their culture as they thought “ Wow we should learn from them” since they had the best technology and weapons at the time. Also Japan is the only country out of the listed that do not use the lunar calendar at all, and hence the most ‘Western’ in a sense.
Naturally, because Japan does not share land border with China, while Korea and Vietnam does. They are most isolated from China. You might also notice a slight difference in culture between Western and Eastern Japan.
@Miranda lambert lol I'm not ignorant I am a person with Chinese background and have learnt Japanese for like 10 years I'd say a bit far from being ignorant of the culture. Those that u have named are decorative aspects of culture. Those are practiced Japanese traditional customs and traditions from thousands of years ago when there was more crossinfluence and trading between China and Asian neighbours. Kanji was adopted from scholars that visited China to learn the system in the 600-800s. The adaptation and idealisation of Western culture by the Japanese occurred later in the 1800s. The influence is more recent. I'm looking from a more culturally behavioural viewpoint.
@@PrincessSakuno I agree. Japan has always decided to choose their own path than Korea or Vietnam whom for a large part of their history were tributaries of whatever dynasty China currently has. Perhaps because Japan is an island nation and has a choice but both Korea and Vietnam are right next door to China. Japanese attitude is also different than the mainland continent. I think Japan is more of an introvert whereas China, Vietnam and Korea are more extroverts. The reason why I think CJK are group together is because of their shared history rather than just similarities. Even though Vietnam is similar to Southern China, I can’t recall a shared history between Vietnam with Japan or Korea historically but CJK has a history with each other and thus, due to this history they all hate each other. 😆
Don't matter if Vietnam is Southeast Asia or East Asia, I think people just want to give the definition weather Vietnamese are dark skin/poor Asian or Light skin/classy Asian. I'm Vietnamese, I think stereo typing of where you from or your ethnicity don't matter at all.

First, I think this question is very very off, not logic at all. Let me put it this way: if you want to have this question, first you have to think about “what is Southeast Asia?”. We all might be able to define East Asia culturally, politically, and historically, but I don’t think we can define “Southeast Asia”, except for its geography. I just think ASEAN or Southeast Asia is just so so diverse. Each country has its own thing, which is also the reason why I love it so much. If you go to Thailand, you see a totally different picture. Same goes with Indonesia, Brunei, Myanmar, etc. Also, this is never a question among us Vietnamese. We simply know that we are a part of ASEAN/Southeast Asia. We have different language, culture, cuisine from East Asia and even other countries in Southeast Asia. Lots of comments say Vietnam is culturally East Asia. I disagree! Those that you said are the results of 938 years of the Chinese colonization and to be fair, when neighbored by such a huge country/civilization like China, for sure, Vietnam got some impact, just like how Korea and Japan got some impacts from China along their history. But that does not make Vietnam more culturally East Asia. They are 938 years in our thousands of years of history. I will put it in the best way to me: Vietnam is the crossroad of East and Southeast Asia. In that crossroad, it is still our own culture that you see the most. Ps: for those who claim Vietnamese language is just mostly Chinese, as a linguist myself, I have to say: NO NO and NO. Linguistically, Vietnamese is not even in the same language family with either Chinese or Korean and Japanese. Vietnamese is actually in the same lang family with Thai or Muong, or Cantonese (recall that people who are from places like Phuc Kien or Hongkong, historically, they belong to the tribal Bach Viet, us Vietnamese these days belong to a branch of those Bach Viet tribes, thus the same linguistic traits. These people are different from Han people, the majority in China). Those Sino-Vietnamese that we have these days again are the results of that 938 years and culture exchange throughout the history. And as the video creator said we had Nôm script because our ancestors borrowed the Chinese script to denote Vietnamese. This is not rare in the world. Latin alphabet is used in many European languages, for example, but that does not mean those European languages are all Latin.
Although Vietnam have 30+ years become member of Asean, but when asking Vietnamese about culture of Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia,... A lot Vietnamese people don't know. But when asking about China, Japan, Korea culture, we will know. So Vietnam is East Asia.
Vpop Vietnam disagree. You can’t be based on that to conclude. What you said is more of the consequence of China, Korea, Japan’s big entertainment industry. Most of Southeast Asia is culturally more East Asian nowadays. Chinese migration has made a huge impact on the local cultures. The most famous foods like Pad Thai, Laksa, Nasi Goreng etc are all Chinese-influenced dishes. The only remnants of Indian culture left are in language and religion. Singapore, which is very clearly Southeast Asian (in my books at least), is much more Confucian than Vietnam. What makes us Southeast Asian is that we don't fit really into the definitions of either East Asian or South Asian. So yeah, Vietnam is part of Southeast Asia.
No, it's not. Just small number of Chinese immigrants does not impact the whole Southeast Asian, food isn't the only thing. Singapore is basically a Chinese country, but it is a young country, does not separate identity for itself, and Singaporeans are mostly speaking English and having westerner name now aday, not tie itself to Chinese anymore. Vietnam have 2000 years of Chinese culture impact, 90% of Vietnamese culture is tied to Chinese culture much more than just food, there are the holidays, the gods, the worship, the ancient government and more. Although Vietnamese is written in Latin alphabet, but that is why Vietnamese can remain ancient Chinese vocabulary pronunciation unchanged when Mandarin, Korean and Japanese failed to do so.

They were the ones who had the wealth and power to finally overthrow Chinese Control and become Independent.
But only a minority, and most of them are ethnic minorities such as Cham and Khmer
In fact, you can even find much more French influence in HCMC and Da Lat than SEA culture.
indeed
yeah you are right
There are so many people in the South who have Chinese blood.

It’s funny that Vietnam wants to be part of this group so bad but I can see Japan and Korea not caring about this.

Next time: "Mongolia: Central or East Asian?"
That'd be an interesting topic to explore!
But my parents are from a part of China with a large Mongolian population and grew up with lots of classmates and teachers of Mongolian descent)
My idea for why Mongolians could be considered a central Asian country instead of East Asian is that it's heavily influenced by Russia, and has adopted Cyrillic script for its language rather than Mongolian script which is only used in Inner Mongolia (part of China).

Not until I’ve moved outside of the region did this topic become relevant in my search to assert my own identity.
Perhaps that is why I find Vietnam interesting even though I'm not Vietnamese and don't live in Vietnam.

in terms of culture, the more you get north of Vietnam, the more influenced by East Asian, while the more south is more SE Asian.
That's true. Kinh (majority ethnic in VN) all come from North and brought Sino culture with themselves while native residents in South mostly are Cham and Khmer, already have what-is-called "South East culture".
When Kinh people came to South, they are inevitably influenced by indegenous culture.

It doesn't matter if Vietnam is Southeast Asia or East Asia.

23andMe gets more accurate the more people use it. I notice east Asia, especially north, have a taller elegant look to them. Idk how to describe. I consider vietnam the east Asian-influenced country in Southeast Asia

It would be concise that they are refering to aboriginal inhabitants whom had always resided within the Red River Delta region before Viet people migrated there
The Vietnamese' ancestors were inhabitants in the now Southern China region , but throughtout Chinese expansion (refering to the Qin Shihuang dysnasty that started the campaign) , many tribes were forced out of the region , Ouyue and Louyue were the first to migrate to the Red River Delta region and established the Van Lang empire .
They originated from western red river delta, hoa Binh hanoi thanh hoa, not southern china

Nice joke from a Vietnamese. They are nothing like the Chinese. Chinese are more ambitious, Vietnamese are socialists.

Thank you! So happy you enjoyed the video ^^
Vietnam is both East and SE Asian. Most Vietnamese genetically have both Chinese and SE Asian genes.
However I disagree that SE Asians is considered poor. Lately SE Asia has been some of the fastest growing economies in the world. One day they will catch up to East Asia in terms of GDP. However if you measure wealth by people’s happiness and content and accepting your fate in life and living with nature, Vietnam is the richest country in all of Asia.
Fax nearly every Viet I know has Han chinese descent
Cư dân Mạng we do have Chinese genes, but also not all of us have it, if you're from the north of Vietnam you most likely have Han chinese descent, which is why they are more light skinned than the south and mostly have monolids. If you're from the south you have a lower chance of being Chinese descent having darker skin and bigger eyes or double eyelids. But you also didn't get the fact that we once used chinese characters and we have words that are literally the same as Cantonese and French
I am here because in defend of Vietnamese sovereignty and to stop evil communist china's plot

Do we consider Indonesians middle eastern/central asian because they're heavily influenced by islam and the middle east? Do we consider Cambodians south asians because they're heavily influenced by India? Are filipinos hispanic because of spanish influence? The answer to all is NO.
SE Asian countries are heavily influenced by much bigger countries but still have our own unique cultures. To say that Vietnam is culturally East asian is to deny Vietnam's own unique culture, traditions, food, history, way of life, etc. and the same goes for every other SE Asian country.
Vietnam is Southeast Asian geographically AND Vietnam's culture IS Southeast Asian culture, PERIOD.
Vietnam is near east asia
Northern Vietnam is east asia

Good morning, this is my comment for the algorithm, have a nice day
Thanks! Have a nice day as well :)
If you ask any young dude in Thailand, the Philippines, or Indonesia, you would get the same answer. They would def. know the cities, kpop idols, but of course, probably nothing about Vietnam. Also, I have been living with Chinese flatmates. They are so so different from us. But anw, to reply to your comment, in short, what you said there is so unfair and not true.
@@lemintrung5635 i disagree. There is so much of similarity of viet culture and other cultures like filipino and thai. Your perception that vietnamese know more about east asian culture is extremely one sided. Do you think the average viet person identifies with the korean's han? Or the japanese honor code? No. The average vietnamese dont relate.
So stop sprouting that sinosphere (chinese propaganda) bullshit
@@lemintrung5635 that's because they're good at exporting their cultures. if you ask young filipinos about kr or jp culture, many of them would know too on a certain degree because they're exposed to kpop and jpop. it doesn't make them east asian
@Chí Thiện Nguyễn you were exposed to chinese culture for 1000 years which is honestly worse than being exposed to korean and japanese culture for at most 2 decades
I mean thinking of it, Vietnam is a lovely mix of both, and it dates back to imperial times when we had Dai Viet to the North and Champa to the south.
I don’t believe so man. The Cham and Khmer had the south for a long time but now their is little evidence of their survival there, culturally. You do see some ancient Cham temples but that’s about it. Culturally it’s very East Asian now
@@jonoung i'm cham myself, but my family moved from vietnam to the us when i was little. we are still around and are very much proud of our culture, and we are not east asian in any way?
@@eightfoottallman yes that it awesome! My uncle is Cham but lived in Cambodia. What I was saying is in Vietnam the culture is influenced historically from East Asian culture and the Cham was not a part of that culture, they had their own. You see very little cultural influence from the Cham in Vietnam nowadays, besides in the remaining Cham communities
@Hernando Malinche still, we have our own sense of community and would like to preserve the little culture we have
@Hernando Malinche my grandparents first moved to the us in the 90s so that my mom and her siblings could have a better life. we used to go back to vietnam to visit other family, and for cham holidays. but there are other cham people in the states as well lol.
Vietnam doesn't have any big Indian influence as I remembered. Maybe Buddhism is the only one I can think of but we used the version that similar to how Chinese used
Even if Vietnam is culturally Sinospheric, it is considered to be Southeast because it locates in southeastern part of Asia.
That's one way to see things!

Nope. East Asians are discipline and ambitious. I dun see that in Vietnamese.
The ancient Royal Families of Vietnam - Nguyen, Tran and Le or Ly were originally Chinese Clans, supposedly from Fujian Province, who moved into Coastal North Vietnam in the first Millenium AD, when it was still under Chinese control.
They brought advanced fishing technologies with them and soon grew wealthy and inter-married with the local Viet.
They were the ones who had the wealth and power to finally overthrow Chinese Control and become Independent.
But these Clans still maintained Chinese Ruling System, Customs and Language in their Imperial Courts.
Over 40% of the Vietnamese male Y-Chromosome is of Chinese origin - and that may extend back to the first Chinese Military Colonies in the 2nd-1st centuries BC, where the Chinese Soldiers inter-married with the local Au-Lac women from the Bai-Yue Tribes.
The ancient Lac cultures may have been Matrilineal, and there seems to be a tradition of greater Female Autonomy and Leadership that the later mixed (Kinh) offspring maintained - see the Trung Sisters Rebellion against China, led by Female Generals.
BUT, while (some of) the Vietnamese (Kinh) may acknowledge their Chinese Ancestry - they have always maintained their desire for Independence from Chinese.
