Well done Rachel. I was really impressed with how low your heart rate was on the run. It didn't skyrocket at the end and it seemed really balanced. Been a while since I've done a run as long as that one. Thanks for the tour of your area as well. Looked like you had a variety of scenery as well. You guys looked really happy too. Thanks for the marathon training updates!
Thanks Eddie. My heart rate is something of a mystery to me. I can never get it to go above 162. That’s my max. Garmin thinks I’m not trying 🤣 I think with all the years of long runs and training, my aerobic base is huge so it just keeps ticking over at a low rate. I do wonder if not being able to get the number higher has something to do with my relative inability to be fast over short distances 🤔 How did your 10k go?
@@racheld1844 so I ran 49.50. the course was 6 miles ... They had to adjust the start because of flooding but didn't get the turnaround right. There was also a decent headwind so it was mentally difficult on the way out and I almost gave up on myself. fortunately I rebounded on the way back and had a real nice final 3 miles back. So all in all, mixed results. I finally have a bit of a break from racing right now so letting the body heal a bit and I can focus on some training.
@@runningoneddie - the weather for your race sounds pretty much like most of our winter training 😁 Floods and strong winds. Glad to hear you stuck it out and finished your race. I used to live by the coast and I hated running along the sea front on a windy day, I felt I never got anywhere, well unless I had the wind behind me.
Nice session. I bought John the Ben Parkes plan for his birthday so he and I will be using a version of that for an autumn marathon for a different approach. The amount of long run workouts is something new for us so looking forward to seeing the results.
I’ve really liked using the Ben Parkes plan. It really gives those long runs a lot of variation but it definitely doesn’t skimp on quantity. The last 4 weeks of peak have been 22,23,22,23. But it worked last year and I’m sure it’s done some magic again this year. I do swap the days and add parkrun as an extra run, do my own s&c and the overall mileage is probably 10-20% higher. It’ll be great to see/hear what you think of the plan when you get stuck into it later this year (and which marathon you plan to run)
We’ve run a couple of long runs where all the miles were easy pace, but they go so slow but sticking changes of pace makes all the difference. Once the warm up was done, it was just blocks of 3. Easy (ish 🤣) It’s a good session.
A successful long run workout, I'm as always very impressed with how well you manage these really long runs. Congrats on your 70 mile week too! Looks like you've had a strong training block to average 90km/week since the start of the year. Enjoy the taper and I hope the hard work will pay off at the end of the month for you both!
Thanks Chloe. Yes, first day of the 3 week taper today, and I’m pretty happy with this training block. I have a decent buffer on goal pace so I can afford to drop back a little, and still hit the target (hopefully 😁) Time to reduce the miles and hopefully not eat too many leftover Easter eggs and crisps in the process 🤣 If you’re contemplating that you’ve hit your peak at your age, then I’m proof that you’ve years to come with still being able to get quicker. I’m running faster now than I was in my late teens/early 20’s and I’m still hopeful I can squeeze a couple more pbs out before I feel the peak has passed. I look to Dawn Broom as my future self and hope I’m still as strong and fast in the years to come 😊
@@racheld1844 Oh I totally hope to still be running as well as she is when I'm her age! I think I still have a lot of room for progress in longer distances, but I feel like it's getting harder to get faster over the 5k let alone shorter distances 😅
@ChloeHamard - a few seconds on a 5k when you’re already so fast is a big deal. Varying the distances over time will all help change the way you run shorter distances. And that’s the great thing about running, the avenues are endless and you can go any which way you choose 😊
Great video, Rachel. That's a tough session. I was hoping to do Newport this year too but my wife is doing a masters this year and the timing would have been too difficult to manage. I'm doing Valencia instead which is December. Love Rory's answer to the "do you like running?" question.
I think I remember you saying last year that Newport was a possibility. Valencia sounds like a great race. I think you have the better option 😁 We both have a love hate relationship with running 🤣
Thanks Mack 😁 I think you’re almost guaranteed to notice the difference. It’s nice to see race day numbers being easier to hit during the race itself. Lots of factors can make it easier but footwear is definitely a big one if you’ve been training in more of a daily trainer. Not long till Manchester 😬… hope the taper is going well!
Ahh I recognise some of those roads. I have friends in Studley so I often run down to Alcester from there. Good luck with Newport. Looks like training is going well 💪💪 I’m off to Boston next week! Eek 😅
I didn’t realise you lived so close. Yeah, the path between Redditch and Alcester has been well worn by my feet over the years, mainly flat, but I don’t like the climb back out of Coughton to get back to Studley 😁 Best of luck for Boston Christina! Hope it’s a brilliant experience (plus you get some race friendly weather ☀️) Let me know how it goes 😊
@@racheld1844 Oh I live in Essex but my friends live in Studley. We visit regularly so I’ve got to know the area pretty well. We love it up that way. Yes, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for good marathon day weather 🤞🤞 I’ll keep you posted xx

I’m looking forward to less miles for sure. I think any hard session gets tough in the last miles and all I want to do is stop. Not long till I can easier again 😁
I have been a runner since age 15. Im now age 67. At age 27 I completed two marathons. My best time was 2 hours and 40 min. From that point I felt that anytime I drop below a six minute mile.....Im no longer " running " . Call it whatever.......but its not running. Running is a smooth rhythmic pace ..........not a bouncy pace as in jogging. So when folks talk about " running " altra marathons I can only say.......they are jogging that distance...or walking. Just my basic view. That dont mean running cant be a 6 min and 10 second mile.......just saying !
I agree with you !!!!But I blame social media for this madness....thank god I ran 40 marathons between 2hrs 59min and 2hrs 28min in the days before social media !!!! Those days in my country the cut off time for a standard marathon was 4hrs 30min....by the look of it you can now take up to 7hrs or more to complete a marathon and still go on social media and said....I ran a marathon....Yes I ran a 90km ultra marathon in 6hrs 12min....in my book...that is running...I ran a 100miler in 13hrs...like you said....now they do it in these ridiculously slow times and still call it running....Welcome to the madness of social media....
At some point in the near future I won’t be getting anymore pbs but I’ll still be able to enjoy running the same distances and events. Later this year I’ll be happily walking and jogging around the ultramarathons I’ve got booked. Getting to the finish line is the only goal rather than the method it took to get there 🙂
👏Nice works, a pleasure to look at💯👍 +new friend🙋♂🌹

You are clearly a professional runner or finished first in your ultra marathons ?
13 hrs ? Hmm .
What race was this then ?
Why you need to include easy pace on LongRun.
Because if I ran all the miles too fast it would be too hard. Easy miles build endurance and aerobic capacity. Plus it’s what my plan says 😁
