How much speed have I lost training for 100 miles? - 5km Fitness Test

- Опубліковано 27 лис 2024
- Just 7 days out from my 3rd 100 mile race, I decided to run an all out 5k effort to see how much speed I’ve lost during the summer’s ultra training. I returned to Edgbaston Reservoir parkrun to see what kind of shape I’m in compared to peak marathon training from earlier in the year.
Tracking link is now available. I’m 3rd on the list of names, race number 156 and my full name is Rachel Davies. Tracker will start at 9am on Saturday 12th October.

Hope you are ok Rachel? Was tracking you yesterday but can’t find you on list this morning.
@@PoetWithPace - I’m ok thanks Donato. I stopped at 50. Just not my day yesterday.
@@racheld1844 glad you are ok. We live to fight another day 👍🏼
Well done on all your hard work for the 100 miler Rachel. Interestingly, I also upped my volume in the later half of this year and minimised speed work for a 50 mile ultra. Like you, in this video, I found that once my body got used to the extra volume, I was more or less as quick as normal at parkrun.
I always read that it’s the aerobic engine that gives us the biggest benefits. Adding speed is the icing on the top. I guess doing the long slow miles has a big impact on keeping that speed almost in top form, just probably not enough to see an improvement. It was a positive result though. I do struggle with speed so not dropping any time means I’ve got the best of both worlds at the moment. Have you run your 50 or still training?
I think you're probably right. I don't seem to have too much of a problem with speed (at least down to 5K pace) but don't enjoy speed training. If I can maintain my speed without doing too much interval training, that's a win win! Yes the 50 miler was at the end of August. It went pretty well. Now building up to another marathon which will hopefully go better than Newport in the spring! It'll be interesting because I haven't done anywhere near as much specific training as I did for that, just lots of miles. Maybe a 100 miler next year!
@@paulhorton4312 - I’ve seen good results from swapping from ultra to marathon training (and back again) I’ve always done a spring marathon and that’s what I use as the springboard to get me through the rest of the year. Although at some point I do want to change that but it just works so well.
Well done on your 50 miler and best of luck with your next lot of training…. and maybe a 100… go for it 😁
Love a short hard effort during taper, and parkrun is ideal! Best of luck this weekend! You can do it!
Thanks Marcus. It was good to get one last effort in. Might be a while before I’m fully recovered to be able to ‘race’ a parkrun again 😁
Great run Rachel, all the best with your 100 miler 💪 😮 cheers Ian
Thanks Ian, last day at work today then a couple of days to try and relax a bit. Hope you had a good run at Alcester 🏃🏻
Some top end speed there 🙌 all the best of luck in the ultra ☺️☺️
Thanks both. It’s not often I see a number on my watch starting a sub 6:30 😁 I doubt I’ll see that for at least another month either 😂
Well done Rachel another brilliant video and amazing that you can run and film at the same time! All the best with the ultra
@@JPLITTrainingLimited thank you! I’ve enjoyed a couple of parkruns without filming but it was nice to take the camera out again 🙂
Cool ParkRun Rachel. Glad the marathon/ long runs didn't take from your speed. I wouldn't be surprised though if you see a bump in performance after your ultra though when you absorb the training. Glad you are training for some speed. I know neglected it when I was doing longer races and I eventually lost some of it. Good luck at the ultra and am looking forward to seeing how you do
Hi Eddie. I’m not sure how much running I’ll be able to do for a good while after. The last time I covered that kind of distance it took me an age to get going again. If that’s the case this time, I might lose that edge I’ve gained. I’m appreciating my last couple of runs this week as they might be my last for a while. Depends how much damage Saturday’s run does to my body 😁
We have the same shoes 😁👍 It's good to see that the ultra training hasn't slowed you down. All the best for race day 👊🏃♀️
Thanks Mark. I’ve had them since June but not had a chance to use them. I have a habit of ‘saving things for best’ 😁 I’ve still got life in my 4 year old Nike tempos so decided to do my other parkruns in those. Once they are retired, the Adidas will become my new racer (plus I have my 3 year old vaporflys) I’m still on a mission to get my money out of every pair before I get rid of any 😂 Anyway, yeah, I really like them. They’re obviously are a good fast trainer… hope you like them too!
Well done & good luck for the 109 miler! 👍
Thanks 😁 I’m (almost) ready to go 🏃🏼♀️
Good luck Rachel 😃
Thanks Claire 🙏
Fantastic sub 21 Rachel! Well done, good luck for the 100 Mile Ultra, I will be following you on the tracker!
@@samsonslaphead1 - thanks Kev 🙂 Everything is packed and ready to go 🤞
Good luck at the weekend Rachel. I love a bit of dot watching so will definitely be following on the tracker.
Thanks Paul. We have a zoom briefing tonight so will look to see if I can find out where I can get the tracker link from. How’s your running going?
Good luck in the 100 mile race Rachel. Training for long distance events seems to have vary impacts on runners speed over shorter distances. A guy at my running club reckoned it took him a while to get back to the 5K times he was doing before marathon training yet a work colleague of mine pretty quickly got a 5K PB after his marathon. Everyone's different I guess.
Hi Geoff, thank you 😁 I’ve always found marathon training was a big boost to my shorter speed. I’d be doing 2-4 hard speed sessions a week. The difference this time is the volume was high but hardly any speed. I thought that would have a much bigger impact on slowing me down but I’ve now found it didn’t 🙂 I do wonder if it was the other cross training that could have given me that edge but it’s one of those things of I won’t know for sure.
So unlike you to be over enthusiastic at the start of a parkrun 😂 well done on the equal pb. Other people have mentioned running fast 5ks off distance training.
The Takumi Sens are a great 5k and 10k race shoe.
Looking forward to following you on the 100.
Good luck!
Thanks both 🙏 I’ve not filmed a parkrun in a while so felt I should have an energetic start 😁 Running half my peak week mileage during that week certainly helped that day. Plus the trainers of course! Can’t wait to get to try them out again when I’m recovered. Which I have a feeling will be a while. The 50 has only just settled down and hitting double that mileage in one go might be a wipe out for a bit. I’m feeling a bit like when Dawn said how she felt the day(s) before Chester. Trying to rest but restless as well. Every dream is a race day disaster atm too 🤦🏻♀️
@@racheld1844 I'd focus on the vlogs where people have hit the Sub 24 so you get better dreams.
Best of luck for the weekend!
Thanks Nick 🙏
Well done Rachel! Gotta love the Takumi Sen 8 🎉 all the very best on your 100 mile race 🏆
Thanks Donato. Yep, a brilliant trainer! and bargain because it was their older model. I’m still on a mission to get every last mile out of old trainers that getting new ones is a big deal 😁
Best of luck Rach, you've done the hard work so now go and enjoy the race. I'll see if I can get you on the tracker at the weekend.
Thanks Gary 😁 Still need these last few days to freshen my legs up. Probably ran too fast on Saturday and my legs have rebelled 😂
@@racheld1844 you'll be fine, you'll recover super quick. Just eat all the carbs :) Like I say - you'll smash it!!!!
Will be tracking you on the day and sending good vibes. It’s sure to be epic!
Thanks Mack 😁 I need to make sure I’m not following in your Worcester Woods parkrun plan and ‘not start off too fast’ 😂… it could have dire consequences 😬
@@racheld1844 😳
All the very best!! I’ll be following along 👍👍
Thanks Conrad. I’m keeping a look out for the tracker link and will get it shared as soon as I find it 😁
go go rachel d
Thank you 🙏
Sounds like the training has been excellent if you've effectively not lost speed! Looking forward to seeing how the 100 miler goes!
Thanks Jess. I’m really pleased with the training block I’ve had. Only thing I’m missing was probably a bit more walking would have been good. Hope you’re recovering well. Looks like you had a great race with Harriet 😁
Aye some long hikes seems like a logical addition to ultra training when you're getting into the really long stuff.
Recovery seems good so far! Went for a tiny test jog this morning and nothing seems out of place.
Good luck Rachel.
Thank you 🙏
Good luck!
@@miriamsalo7123 Thanks Miriam 😊
Speed training sucks 🤣 it's all about long slow ultra shuffling....my favourite kind of running. 😊👍
Except your ultra shuffle is my speedwork day 😂 If I could ditch 2 things from my training, it would be strength training and speed work. Not my favourites but essential to stay strong.
Been tracking you on the A100 Rachel and I now can’t find you. I hope you’re ok 🤞🤞🤞
I pulled out, just wasn’t my day 🙁
@@racheld1844 aw I’m really sorry to hear this as I know how hard you’ve trained, but well done for making the start line and giving it your best.
