  • Welcome to a UA-camr showdown. Walsall Arboretum is one of the fastest parkruns in the country and when I heard the Two Running Brooms were paying a visit, I couldn’t resist giving John a run for his money and challenging him to a sub 20. I might have the odds stacked against me but I was going to give it my best shot. Find out how Rory fairs as well and why Dawn wasn’t running.
    Thanks to John for sending me his footage from his camera. If you aren’t already subscribed to John and Dawn’s channel, do go and check it out. They are both very experienced runners and have lots to share.
    Thanks so much for watching 😊

    Ha. Loved this. It was great to meet you both and especially enjoyed the extra spice of the triple Sub 20 chase. I don't look at my watch to check pace, more because it's just there and it's some numbers to distract me from the discomfort. We're sure you've both got Sub 20s and far beyond in you given the right circumstances. Solidarity with the virus, you might have heard me sounding croaky on our VoiceOver! Hope to meet again in the future. We must get to Arrow Valley!

      In hindsight I probably should have sat just behind you John, and seen how long I could have held on for. I think I may have already started with the cold that day as Rory went downhill that afternoon. He’s bounced back but almost 2 weeks and I’m still feeling off. But on the plus side, I’d rather have this now than a week before the marathon. Lots of bugs this winter having caused havoc to some training plans.
      Hope you’re all recovered from your marathons and settling into making some running plans for the summer, and yes, if you’re ever at Arrow Valley, you must let us know 😁

      Thanks Neil. John sent me some of his footage from when I was in front so thought I’d have a go with the double view. It actually nearly wrecked the edit as my software couldn’t cope with the overlay (I edit on my phone). After several hours of taking the video apart, and re-doing it I got it to work. Least I know how not to do it next time 🤣

    Great video. Two sets of my favourite UA-camrs together in one video. Hope you both get over the cold and calf strain soon. Saw somewhere that the Newport Marathon was a long course by almost 300m. You obviously did better than your official time. You inspire me to get over this knee injury and get out there running again. Take care.

    Hope you guys feel better. Those calf strains can take a while to heal. I do believe the super shoes and low profile shoes put a strain on the calf muscle / Achilles areas. I know I got a calf strain eons ago a few days before a full marathon -- suffice to say I didn't run that marathon that year. It took a good 3 to 4 weeks for it to be 100%. None the less a fantastic time for you. I've done a few 5Ks of late and will be sticking to that distance. My training / health issues have totally derailed my fitness of late so it might be a while before I can get back into longer distance stuff. Just happy to be able to be running what I can and still making a somewhat competitively showing. Cool video and hope you guys get back to 100% soon!

    • @racheld1844
      @racheld1844  Місяць тому +1

      Hi Eddie, sorry to hear training and health has taken a bit of a dip. Good to hear that you’re still able to keep going with the shorter distances though. Whenever I’ve been injured or life’s got in the way, even something is better than nothing. 5ks are a brilliant way to keep the fitness/ training going.
      Both Rory and I are both very prone to picking up calf injuries. Unfortunately it’s his turn at the moment. We think it was probably due to not having enough recovery after the marathon, but it could have equally been the race day trainers putting extra stress on the legs. His calf is improving but it’s frustratingly slow 🫤

      @@racheld1844 Yeah I got my first bout of Achilles tendonitis after my first marathon, so I know what you mean about marathons impacting that area. I've lost about a full minute on my 5K time in the last 4 - 6 weeks. I think it is some meds that I've been on. So trying to sort that out. I have either deferred all my half marathons or switched to a shorter distance. I absolutely have no endurance right now and it seems to be a common side effect. Hopefully I can get that sorted out. Very frustrating!

      @@eddiegaul1903 - Do you just like to run, or would you be able to top up with a bit of cross training? Rory ended up getting into triathlon because he was fed up of his running injuries stopping him training. If you can still run some shorter distances, then you could reduce the endurance loss by topping it up with a bit of cycling or even swimming. I’m not too good with getting the cross training in when I’m injured, I always feel it’s not as good but it’s something to tide me over till I can get back to it 🙂

      @@racheld1844 I keep telling myself I need to cross train especially at times like these. I have a physical therapy routine I do but it isn't endurance based. I live right next to the running trail so making the effort to drive to the gym to cross train (and actually pay for it) causes me to lose interest. I know I should get on a bike or elliptical but making that extra effort has been a bit of a lift for me. I am running 6 days a week still but keeping the mileage at 6 or less.
