As a native German speaker allow me to clarify that the first way you pronounced Schminke was the correct version. It’s [shmin-kuh], not [shmink], nor [shmin-key]. Very excited to try out the new Cochenille red. Love Schmincke's special editions, they are always so interesting.
Please be aware that this historic pigment is neither vegan nor vegetarian. It’s produced from dried parasitic insects living on cacti in South America. They used to be the main source for food, textile and cosmetic dyes and have been widely replaced by a synthetic pigment. However cocheniel red is still used as a nontoxic food dye.

I got the small travel tin…looking forward to getting it! I’m amazed at the pronunciation cause I googled it and got both versions…kind of frustrating for a prescriptive linguist…
The red looks amazing.i checked your website and your handmade paints look beautiful…also, I can smell the clove oil (mostly because I just looked through my tins and I have some that used clove..very cool. That cherry blossom painting is very pretty!

Thank you., I get really nice reviews on my own watercolor. Some of my clients collect them and no longer paint with anything else. That's so encouraging.

I don’t think Cochineal Red is light fast.

It only has a couple of stars but that is the case for many reds in professional grade. I'm beginning to think it's the nature of the paint.

@@JacquelineJax Yes, indeed. More reds tend to have lower lightfastness ratings than other colours. Note that Schmincke has a 5-star system, so the rating is 2/5 stars which is much lower than other reds. Other Schmincke reds are usually 3/5 or higher.

Cochineal is a notoriously fugitive colour, mostly used in the food colouring industry. If you are making art for reproduction only it is worth buying, otherwise it is a historical pigment, but not really practical. It will fade rapidly on exposure both light and air as it is an organic colour and not a pigment at all. Use, photograph well, and be prepared for it to fade unless it is well protected from light and air. Especially when diluted….
A work around is to mix it with a lightfast red, the original will still fade over time but will retain the lightfast pigment. It will typically fade and brown eventually. In the very short term it will be very staining.
