I appreciate jamie bringing the common people's food from india onto this food channel. There isn't a point in complaining about the authenticity of it because this meal he created was beautiful.I'm in love.
For anyone wondering, this is a really lovely dish. I've just made it today and am currently eating it with some rice. The amount that is made from the given quantities of ingredients means that you get 4 generous portions worth of food, so for me this will be good for my main meal today and the rest will be frozen and eaten for a healthy lunch at work, however I can imagine that this would easily feed a family. I also want to mention that whilst this meal takes a long time to cook, it really isn't all that labor intensive and is well worth the invested time, thanks for the recipe!
This is arguably the best daal recipe I have ever tasted. I mean literally couldn't put tasting spoon down. I was eating it straight from the pot. You eat it without the chapatti and rice. But its delicious either way. I have made this 2 weeks in a roll. Trust me I have tried quite a few daal recipes (including Vegan versions) but this will always be my fave.
Thank you for this! I have a date today and she's vegan while I am not. I decided to cook for her (supersmart decision, I know), and wasn't sure what to make. This is perfect! I think you just saved my life! :)
Thanks for this fabulous recipe Jamie! I tried it today and my family loved it! I tweaked it a bit by adding butter chicken paste instead of the rogan josh, which I didn't have and also added a bit of coconut milk and it turned out great! Please keep more of your exciting veg recipes coming our way! 😃
+Laurence Devlin A lot of Indian recipes are vegan. If you are vegetarian, the choice is endless. There are good channels on UA-cam. Search and you shall find.
I think I might have to try this one pretty soon. I love that as a recipe, its been made easy to follow and put together. One thing I would love to see from the food tube channel would be a healthier take on Dahl Makhani. It's by far my favorite lentil based dish, but the amount of fat required to get the desired result means its something you should only really have on occasion. Its also hard to come by where I live, the closest I have found is a microwavable version in a pouch and its just not the same.
Traditionally tempering is mixed with the dal to boost the flavor but I love the idea of how it is added like a garnish to each serving. Split chickpeas dal tastes much better personally and has a stronger texture compared to the popularly used Toor dal( Do not know the English nomenclature). It`s so appetizing to watch regular Indian food made in such a twisted way ! Baking the aubergine and adding to the Dal was some gold standard innovation. BTW I am a non vegetarian but this dish got me commenting on UA-cam for the first time :) Jamie knows his spices well. I think he was trying a quick fix recipe, hence the curry paste. But fresh powder/paste always best !
Made this tonight, though just the dhal by itself. The temper curry leaves added such a nice touch, first time ever cooking with them. Definitely going to have fun playing around with this recipe in the future.
+Jamie Oliver Just remade it but instead of eggplant I roasted potato and carrots instead! Turned out just as good! This method of making a dhal is awesome and is turning out way better than my previous attempts. Thanks so much!
I didn't have Any mustard seeds so I used aniseed and it worked pretty Delicious 😋 Question about nutritional value: after all that boiling and oven time, is there any vitamins left from the Aubergine?
The way you cook everything is always so quick, easy and effortless! I wish I could cook like you,but in real life it takes ages for me to cook a single meal x)
Dear Jamie and team, So many great videos. So much inspiration. Thank you! But if there's one thing, it's that the fast edits and background music of recent videos make it difficult to focus on what is actually going on. There was such a beauty to the simplicity of the Jamie does... and Jamie at Home series. No background music or fast cuts necessary. This content is really good. Trust in it, and leave out the flash!
It looks delicius!!! I❤Curry But i have a question, it is posible to use ordinary curry if i dont have curry paste? i love your channel!! 😄helloo!! from Mallorca!
Looks delish Xx I dont know if every indian house hold does this but once you roast the chapatis on the pan, my mom puts the chapati over medium flame so that it puffs up like a foot ball and then she serves up. :) Im totally gonna try that aubergine though :)
It was so beautiful to see Jamie making chapattis the authentic way. Never thought I would ever see any western chef make this in a conventional way. Such a legend ! to show the originality of a recipe so subtly except for the ready made paste but can’t expect everyone to have all the ground spices all the time ! Well done Bravo 👏
Great recipe! Question: do you need to salt the aubergine (and rinse off) before cooking to get rid of the bitterness? I usually do this, just wondering if you think it's necessary here?
This recipe makes me cry. If you’re going to promote or cook anything related to the Indian subcontinent, make it properly with authenticity. Dont white wash it, kmt.
That’s not „white washing“ it’s being creative with Recipes . You should be proud, that People like the Indian Kitchen an include it to their Meals in their Way. Nothing bad doing this.
OH Jamie! That would be a meatless meal favorite for our house for more than a few days during the week. So fragrant, spicy and satisfying! You've done it again.
mouth watering mmmmmmmmmm onr Question jamie--- i brought the set of pans you where using in the clip .....you used a metal spoon ???? are they that strong or are you just a bad boy lol thanks for the inspitation
Jamie needs to make more playlists to showcase all his vegetarian and vegan content, this video is buried with no playlist attached and Jamie has literally hundreds, if not thousands of videos.
I liked that you cooked the eggplant in the oven. Never tried that and will try it. But what I did not like was you added curry paste. You should make your own paste. it gives a much fresher and better flavor. Also you cooked daal with split peas. It is usually cooked with toor daal. Never tried that and will try it. But what I did not like was you sprinkled the tempa/tempering/tadka on top of it like it was cilantro. You are supposed to mix the whole tempering with the daal. It adds a whole new flavor to it.
garam masala powder from scratch: 1 to 1 ground coriander powder to ground cumin powder 1/8 part ground black pepper, 1/8 cinnamon, 1/16 part ground cloves, 1/16 part ground black cardamom powder tip get all your ingredients cut ready to chuck in prior to firing up the pans , spices can burn quick so the tempering is a matter of seconds not minutes need to make sure chilli doesn't burn otherwise you'll be coughing up a lung ...have fun
mate you will get a better browning on your rotis without the oil , besides hot pan surface will make olive oil toxic fast . Back home it's just wholemeal wheat or half and half spelt flour with just plain water no salt . Knead well to activate the gluten and then it's perfect for using to make your chapattis. SPlit pea gets claggy compared to channa dhal I would go with the second because the texture will be creamy yet there will good flavour and mouth feel . Remember to go to your local indian grocers can get your beans and pulses at rock bottom price and your exotic veg and herbs too.
What spices would you suggest for a home-made rogan josh curry paste? I'd like to try the recipe but am put off by the thought of having to buy a ready-made paste. Thanks
All the people bitching about it not being the right way or the traditional way. Every chef has its own way, and I don't remember him saying that it's supposed to be authentic. He wanted it to be easy and quick, hence the pre-made curry paste. And the oil sauce whatever it's called added afterwards, who cares. Damn butthurt natives complaining, almost as bad as Italians bitching about anything that is done differently than in their hometown.. Would be nice to know a recipe that is authentic according to your standards, as I like cooking myself please feel free to hit me up with a real recipe for this dish. aubergine, daal and chapattis , i love all these 3 things! I'm going to make this!
+Luveena Lee Wohoo! Let us know how it turns out!
Traditionally tempering is mixed with the dal to boost the flavor but I love the idea of how it is added like a garnish to each serving. wow! This is so amazing..you completely changed boring daal into very tasty looking dish.
I didn't have Any mustard seeds so I used aniseed and it worked pretty Delicious 😋
Question about nutritional value: after all that boiling and oven time, is there any vitamins left from the Aubergine?

+JuNkY LaCoUr Do you mean, as in a pre-made curry? You need a paste as the dhal will dilute it.
Thank you now im hungry again xD
like everytime i see your videos :D
+Ace Wayne Wohoo! Mission accomplished
I love your 15 min meals like this one
Nicely done..... missing my mom's food back in India :(
Looks great!

Impossible to find Rogan Josh paste where I am. Is there any alternative which would work well ?

Awesome!! I am always looking for delicious vegetarian meals for our meatless days! Thanks Jamie!
Most Indian recipes are vegetarian and can easily be made vegan by omitting ghee or substituting milk with coconut milk! :-)

the spices + oil thing is called Talimpu in telugu, which we add in all our daals after they're prepared for that beautiful flavour.
I love when you cook Indian!
it is so different from the procedure we follow..! but this still looks sooop delish!!
+Smriti Iyer It's a GOODEN. :)
Tempa? I thought it was tarka.
+Fahad Baig Tadka/Tarka is the Hindi word for it. In English it's called tempering (temper) the oil. Also they are not exactly the same process.
In gujarati, my mum calls it "vaghaar"
In telugu we call it Thalimpu.
it is called tempering a curry. subtitles are dumb, it is temper not tempeh lol.
dude you are so awesome
What spices would you suggest for a home-made rogan josh curry paste? I'd like to try the recipe but am put off by the thought of having to buy a ready-made paste. Thanks

Holy yum batman!
+Ti Co Where's Robin when you need him?
Does it work with chickpea ass well? can't find split peas anywhere oO
thumps up jamie :)
Hey Jamie or anyone else.. How much oil do you use for the chapati? Mine are always too dry and not floppy/foldable 😗 help!
Ooooo. This is interesting.
Haha. I like dhal when it separates and is thick at the bottom and watery at the top.
Also it tastes 100x better if you break up roti (or chapati) into a bowl, then pour in dhal and leave it for a minute. So good.
+Nali Singh nah roti dhal and pickle is the shit 😎
+Fahad Baig If the dhal is good enough, there's no need for pickle.
+Nali Singh Now THAT'S the reaction we want! :D
