Excellent point on learning one sequencer to control everything. While the learning curve is steep, (maybe not for all), the device is very deep and in my opinion, the best sequencer out there. Agree that it's inspired me to hook it up to other gear that might have been collecting dust. It's also and fantastic companion to the iPad. And works great with DAWs to control VSTs as well.

Bought it because it was a very price competitive option when considering eurorack sequencers. And being external solves the cables hanging over the sequencer issue. Now I use it for pretty much everything. Especially like it in hybrid techno live setups since it very easy and fast to program (even faster when using all the randomization tools available). And there is so much stuff in it to explore that it will take a good while before you get bored.

For euororack its invaluable. I use the midi out to sequence a BitBox Micro and all the CV and gates end up getting used. Using midi for the micro means all its I/O is free for use. I love my Oxi, but I went with the original color scheme because when I tried both, I found that the black-out square in the center of each of the RGB pads on the Black Edition made it considerably more difficult to see, at a glance what that pad was doing, by making it more difficult to see the color. It's difficult to explain, but when you look at these small pads, if there's a black square in the center and you're quickly trying to discern the color of the pad by looking only at the perimeter (especially while it's playing) it's MUCH harder. I think the black one looks fantastic, but for me, it was less functional for that reason. (And believe me, I LOVE black editions - I have a Grandmother Dark, Microcosm Black Edition, Strymon Big Sky Midnight, etc., etc. I really wanted this black Oxi, but in the store it was just so obvious that having the entire pad illuminated really lends itself to faster recognition/smoother workflow - at least for me.

I'd say they have about an 80% overlap, with the ecach having some interesting tricks of its own. The Hapax does have an interesting way of stacking MIDI effects (like you can stack an Arp on an Arp on an Arp - no idea what that turns into but you can do it 🙂). docs.google.com/document/d/1etLnCeL0BIIc-4HeFqp3lRIB2nNKVJaVp3NsHARar3Q/edit?usp=sharing

I have one and it’s really cool, but I get stuck in a loop and can never figure out how to make it to the next section of a song. I’ve done most of my writing in a daw, so writing in a sequencer has been a challenge. Great vid!

    • @mvaudio5
      @mvaudio5 Рік тому +5

I normally start with one pattern (a chord progression a melody and maybe a drumloop on different sequencers), then i save them in one slot each.
I make some variations of the patterns and save them on different slots. When i have a bunch of patterns or ideas i can either:
      - Perform them live manually loading the patterns.
      - Put them in the arranger so the arranger does the job for me. In the arranger I can set infinite repetitions so i manually control how the arrangement progresses (like launching clips in Ableton) or i can set the number of repetitions so the arranger does it by itself fully automatic and I only tweak knobs in other machines.

I have the Oxi One and the Syntakt. I was also a DAW guy and like you, it was a challenge to go fully DAWless. I though it was limiting, but on the contrary, I think it pushes to be extremely creative to get interesting results.
The way I compose on the Syntakt is that I start with one pattern, and then I sequence the same pattern by muting / unmuting tracks (Elektron song mode is fantastic with this, so easy to compose a song in this way).
On the Oxi One it's a little bit more challenging but I apply the same principle.

interesting, Im just wondering, why you are using a keystep and an oxi, when a hydra synth and a digitakt could the job with their keyboard and sequencer on their own 🤔, the oxi just seems usefull for me for controlling modular gear. Isnt it redundant in this setup?

In this workflow all of the melodies live in the Oxi One which is sequencing the Hydrasynth, which doesn't have a sequencer. So yeah it almost seems redundant but it's actually not - instead of plugging in steps, I like to use the KeyStep sometimes to actually play in parts.

There's a very long waiting list, and it's a lot more money, with the CV output board etc. Question: does Oxi One do Polyphonic MIDI Spread? (That's where live MIDI input gets routed to a specified number of monophonic MIDI or CV/Gate Out channels, by round robin, i.e. Voice Allocation.) I guess it’s device has some nice stuff as well but not build on the best fundamentals. Tight midi should be the first thing to get right. Jitter is no swing or feel….. better have separate sequencers and E-RM multiclock to get the clocks tight and shifted to adjust for midi in to audio out latency differences. This machine is a toy next to a cirklon. Don’t say cirklons are hard to get….. I have bought 7 cirklons and only waited for 1 of them (3 years) no professional who takes himself serious would bother with a toy like oxi one. @LiamKillen Hi!
There are so many aspects and so many questions about the structure of this STEP SEQUENCER that no reviewer addresses, like they wouldn't even know what its main purpose is.
They jump over its MAIN FUNCTION, like it wouldn't even exist, and they only talk about some secondary and mostly useless "capabilities" - like using it as a midi keyboard for playing notes and chords.
I do not want to play piano on a 16X8 chess board!
That's what pianos and midi keyboards are made for!
This is a STEP SEQUENCER and its main purpose is to be used as a STEP SEQUENCER! All the other features are extras.
And you should have started by describing its step sequencing capabilities.
Not only you did not started with its step sequencing capabilities, but you completely ommited them.
I would use this device as a step sequencer for my DAW. And my DAW will send the midi information to each of the desired midi devices through its midi tracks -> midi interface -> midi DIN cable -> midi device.
These are the things that we need to know first. Things which you, ond other youtubers, forgot about.
1 - How is the timeline of a track (a track in a DAW) represented on this device's pads?
Are there multiple ways in which this device can represent the timeline of a DAW's track?:
    - a single horizontal row on a single page?
    - a single horizontal row on multiple pages?
    - multiple horizontal rows on a single page?
    - multiple horizontal rows on multiple pages?
2 - How is one bar's worth of time (a bar on a track inside a DAW) spread over the pads of this device?
Into how many smaller divisions/pads can 1 bar (a bar inside a DAW), be divided to? 16? 32? 64? 128?
If it is 128 divisions/pads per bar, will 1 bar encompass all the pads on the entire grid/page (8 horizontal rows X 16 pads)? - that would be great!
Or 1 bar will only use one horizantal row per page, and it will encompass 8 grid pages x 16 pads per page?
    Haw many pages are there?
3 - Is each horizontal row "hardwired" to a different midi channel?
Can multiple tracks (on different midi channels) inside the DAW be controlled by this device at the same time (different horizontal rows triggering notes on different midi channels)?
4 - How many midi channels can this device use simultaneously? How?

I appreciate you reaching out about this however I simply don't have the time to address everything here. I would suggest hitting up a facebook group / server and asking these questions there. People will surely get back to you within a few hours.

@@LiamKillen That's why after noticing that a 18 minutes long video wasn't enough for you to explain its basic functions (nevertheless you "showed how to" play piano notes on its chess board-like surface) I decided not to subscribe to your channel and to hit "do not recommend channel".

@@Jack_Sparrow_1Dude, you have got to be kidding me (even though i know you're not).... If you're not satisfied with the presentation of features in this video, why not just LOOK FOR OTHER TUTORIAL VIDEOS ON YT, instead of unloading on Liam here? 🤷‍♂️ Seems like you spent wayyyyy more time writing your diatribe here than IT would have taken to just search up a video with the actual answers to all your questions.... If you're indeed that interested to begin with 🙄🌌

@darkuniversesound 1 - Because I already watched a few long videos, and I'm yet to find a good explanation of the basic features and workflow of this device. UA-cam got cluttered with very poor quality "presentations" from unskilled people who might be better at doing other things than making youtube "reviews".
Many lazy people trying to trick the life by doing nothing and hoping to earn their bread by posting poor quality videos on UA-cam.
Manufacturers pay these "youtubers" to post positive "reviews" on UA-cam (or offer them those devices for free).
All these makes it very difficult to find an honest and good quality presentation.
2 - Because this is the comments section designed to share our opinions about the quality and the content of the video!
      What is wrong with that?
Did I make him sad and make him lose his hopes that he will become a successful UA-camr?
Maybe he is better at doing something else.
Life is more difficult than that. Making a job that you're not good at can have many negative consequences - like keeping you from pursuing your real passions.
