  • We received many great comments and questions after our Dock Talk with Nigel Calder. This boater asked, "I recently watched your UA-cam video with Nigel Calder (fantastic!). You discussed the importance of an Equipment Leakage Circuit Interrupter (ELCI). I know that some marinas are slowly adding these to the shore power receptacles, but you mentioned that you can install one on your boat? What is involved? Why is it important?"

Comments about the $200-300 enclosure premium over the breaker aside. Non-ignition protected breaker in a not really ignition protecting enclosure. So big and ugly betting on most wanting to mount it in the engine room where it shouldn't be?
It seems all are just concerned with protecting dock power entry, ignoring onboard generator/inverter supply. The latter is more likely to be a hazard in use away from dock.
I have not been in a domestic marina allowing swimming, barely working on your boat in the water. Still, I would anchor out before working in the water if possible.
Looks like Carling makes the BlueSea, not finding it labled as Carling in the market past the website. Anyone know why? We still have C19 breaker shortages.
Presently, I have limited use intentionally for AC onboard. Like to see what others are doing.
Europe-Japan seem to have similar devices, just not named ELCI, din rail standards.

Any thoughts on the Southwire 67060-001 30A Portable ELCI Device that connects to the shore power cable?

I have a boostable transformer. Should the ELCI be installed before or after the transformer?

How about divers cleaning boat bottoms? Are they at risk of shocks and what should the diver or boat owner do to ensure the divers safety? Thanks.

Elci has higher Milli amp trip. How does this compare to a galvanic isolator? Thank you

The supplier, Blue Seas for example has instructions for installing the ELCI; assuming you already have an AC inlet; the ELCI is installed betwen the AC INLET and the existing AC panel connections. Since you are installingt on a boat, which uses tined and stranded wire, I always use ferrules when connecting to clamp connections, due to vibration causing connections to loosen over time. If you do not have experience with AC or feel comfortable - get a qualified Marine Technician to do it for you!
