  • Wade wrote to us with a great question to end 2022. He asks, "Jeff, I have learned so much from your videos. I am heading out in my 42-foot trawler for a few months in remote British Columbia. There are places to stop along the way, but they may have to order in parts, or I could get stuck in the weather. Would you be able to talk a little about the spare electrical parts that I should have onboard? (i.e. fuses, wire, pumps, what type of multimeter? backup charger? Inverter?)."
Jeff's recommendation for an onboard multimeter, www.pysystems....

I’d add to your list of spare parts - heat shrink, butane torch to solder/heat shrink/butt connector heat shrink. A brass brush and contact cleaner. Roll of solder. A crimp/wire strip/cutter tool. A very good light source that is bright and compact so you can see in dark places to diagnose and make repairs. And lastly, bring any electrical manuals/wire diagrams for your boat/ and a spiral notebook for making notes/lists/and jotting down things you need so that you don’t forget things.

Storing the parts - I use a vacuum seal machine along with those dry packs. (you can reheat them and dry them out again). Tools also in vac seal or.Sous Vide bags - zip lock and vac seal - best of both. UV Tyraps, the good ones with SS latches. Silicone marine grease. Tape in colors or number tags.

Heat gun to seal the shrink connectors. I lighter will do in a pinch as will a butane torch but the heat gun is cleaner and no open flame.

Bought my boat new in 2017. I wish I'd started watching you before I started adding things. I've changed (redone!) so many little things after watching you. YES, very frustrating to start over to get it right. Thanks.

I would add a couple of toggle switches, simple test light, assortment of terminals (and crimping tool), a wire with alligators for tests, and a capacitor for the generator. I will start shopping for the alternator, and water system pumps. Thanks!!!

Have a spare battery for that multimeter. I got caught with a low battery that gave wrong readings. Also a spare Macerator pump would be a good idea.

Spare Macerator Pump - that I would add to your list of spare pumps. I also carry a Macerator service kit (spare impeller & gaskets) as the impeller often fails before the motor, but sometimes it's easier to just replace the whole pump and do the service kit later in a more 'ventilated' area back home.

Don't forget to bring an extra bilge pump. I was in Georgian Bay, and I gave my extra to a fellow boater.

Great video and comments. I would have a spare fridge compressor controller (small black box on Danfoss compressors) to protect your food in the fridge or freezer and indeed having spare navlights is nice, they frequently fail, even expensive LED’s like Lopo lights. In addition have spare batteries for remote controls, torches, etc.
