Besides being a simply incredible singer/songwriter/musician, James Taylor is an unassuming, modest and truly nice man. I have never heard anyone characterize him in any other way.
This 50+ black woman has always been a fan. While growing up in Louisiana...I dreamed of the Carolina's and Appalachia area...his songs took me there...now living in Georgia, I have seen north Georgia and the best is putting in his cd's and just looking around. Thank you for the posting. Thank you Mr. Taylor for the sharing. I really love your work.
I love James Taylor’s music and I enjoy hearing him speak. He is full of wisdom and humble! I especially like the way he appreciates what he’s able to do and that we, the fans appreciate him. He comes off as just one of us and that is refreshing! When I listen to his songs, like ‘Walking Man’, it tells a story and it feels like, Thanksgiving and Christmas time, given his descriptions of the weather changes. What a great songwriter and human being. I also take note that James struggled emotionally, as I feel, many of us do. Needless to say, his songs have gotten me through some rough spots and still do! James Taylor is a breath of fresh air in these uncertain times we’re experiencing. People like him make life worth living. Very inspirational!
The whole world loves you James... in spite of your trials, you show us heArt like no other son of America. I have so much appreciation for you. Thank you brother!
As famous as James Taylor is he still never gets enough credit for his musical contributions to the human race. This man writes and sings songs that make life on this planet better for the listener. And I believe he is getting better and funnier as he gets older. We can all learn from him.
Wait, what??? Who's not giving him "enough" credit? Do you have any idea how many generations of musicians know and respect his music? Lead vocalists, guitarists, song writers, and we're talking across so many different genres of music. What about you? Seems like you might be a drummer? Do you think drummers across the world for the last 50 years don't know and respect his musical virtuosity? What genuinely matters in life are not the public accolades someone receives. Man, that's all about narcissists needing to feel associated with people who are either very famous or very wealthy, and deluding themselves that they're being admired by association. After all, that is the end all, be all that narcissists seek, right: admiration (public awards, public accolade, likes on social media? They care about nothing more, not even their own children or parents. Public admiration is everything, and that is a form of rather toxic psychopathology for which there is no cure, sadly (until brain transplants are perfected). It's also true that there are a number of fame-seekers who suffer from it, which prompts them to seek out those frontman or lead guitarist roles...Clapton, John Mayer, Elton John, Kanye, Bieber, Gene Simmons, Drake, and Madonna are just a few I can think of off the top of my head. I'm making an assumption here, but can you think of a single more important contribution that a musician can make to humanity than making life on this planet better for those who hear their music? That doesn't even take into account how many other musicians and songwriters he's inspired across the globe. Music is the one true universal language, even when the lyrics and in a language you don't understand, truly good music will convey the emotion through the accompanying sound. ...and I'm not even a musician. I can't read a note. I mean, I can tell you that's an eighth note, that's a 16th, that a whole note, that's a treble clef...and no freakin' idea what they mean. lol But I have excellent hearing and perfect pitch (no idea how that happened), and I can appreciate the heck out of both deep lyrics and a gorgeous melody, or sometimes the occasional feel good song, and I just stand there and marvel at how you guys put it all together...and especially if you sing WHILE you're playing, and don't get me started on how you can do TWO DIFFERENT THINGS at the same time with your hands, and as a drummer with your feet, and how you can keep perfect time like a human metronome. It's nice to be recognized for a job well done, and it's even more meaningful when people tell you about how something you did made a difference in their life, but no truly decent human beings "needs" to be publicly acknowledged and recognized. That is for the narcissists in politics who have a near constant need to be in the public eye at ribbon cutting ceremonies, etc. Leave that to the trumps of the world, who are so desperate for admiration that they need their name in giant gold letters across every building the bank owns.
James' music will live forever. He is my favorite all time artist. Such a humble man with it ! All power to you James, you have given so much to many generations of fans.
Growing up 5 miles from Williams where this interview took place is sureal. I have always loved James Taylors music, his life story & the demons he has overcame as a human being. God bless this musical genius!
I can't believe he sounds this good 50 years later. You can play guitar until your 100. But his voice.......It's the one instument that time takes it's toll. Amazing that he's still got it. Bravo.
James Taylor is an amazing personal inspiration for me. I play his music, try to aspire to his excellance. He has taught me so much, my hope is that I can emulate, learn from, and eventually teach others about what he means to my life
So humble...the mellowest dude in the biz...troubador par excellance...his cup never runs dry as far as songwriting goes...my all time fave artist. Kudos to you sweet baby james. Long live!
The guy opens his mouth and it’s magical. After his first song he puts down the guitar and I was like ‘where am I?’ I had totally forgotten about the interview. Easily one of the most distinctive vocalists of our time.
Love the man and his music that seems to speak to all of us at one time or another. He is such a talent with his crystal clear voice. I never tire of his songs. Fortunate to have seen him in concert years ago.
Like a good wine, his "bouquet" is making him better and better... Thanks for posting. By the way, 60 is still young especially if you are young at heart! You rock.
Mr. Taylor, you are a talented musician, but you also are a gifted person that can help people through a lot of personal issues.Your music and lyrics does this. You are a blessing to a lot of us who are never heard and seen,,,thank you,,,,
im glad i got to meet James when he came to Australia we had a chat for about ten minutes he is a really nice person...thanks for the music James Taylor
My main musical hero since 1968 from his first Apple release, which I still have in my collection. He can always make me feel good, no matter what life is throwing at me. Probably seen him in concert 30 times or more. Never tire of his music. :-)
I agree. I have always loved JT and now I am trying to play his songs on my guitar. Such feel good, mellow songs, and sweet, wonderful, maple syrup voice. Love love love.
I agree very much, brobdj! I have always believed this, but I was recently diagnosed with cancer and this is ringing more true for me now. I have always enjoyed singing and think I am pretty decent at it. Once I get through Chemo treatment, I want to start using my singing to help others. Yes, find your gift and share it with others!
It's amazing to hear that his voice hasn't changed of the past decades. Heard him first in the early eighties, but never had a chance to see him in a live session here in Germany. I really love his music.
Worth repeating from Jethrey: " I Love Every Song James Taylor sings !!! It draws you in and takes you to wonderful places in Mind and Spirit !!! Truly an Inspirational Sound of a Musical Genius and Awesome Songwriter !!! "
I Love Every Song James Taylor sings !!! It draws you in and takes you to wonderful places in Mind and Spirit !!! Truly an Inspirational Sound of a Musical Genius and Awesome Songwriter !!!
very much love the musical singer song-writer, the Ârtist with just their acoustic guitar: James Taylor, John Denver, Jackson Browne, Neil Young, to name perhaps the most influential in my own persuit of the craft ❣❣ 😍💓
brobdj Had his finger on the pulse, with his post "The meaning of life is to find your gift - the purpose of life is to give it away ( i.e. share it )" And that brings to mind the truly wonderful song that James Taylor wrote entitled "The Secret of Life" The lyrics are very timely. "The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time." A truly lovely song, written by a truly amazing man!! God Bless James Taylor for sharing his innermost thoughts and self with the world through his music!
Still waters indeed run deep! So deep in fact, that they're unfathomable. How we love to skim along the surface longing to see the bottom. James lets us peer over the edge now and again and catch a glimpse. And what do we see? Ourselves of course.
Great songs. Linda Ronstadt did a wonderful cover of 'Jukebox' on her Prisoner in Disguise album. He's an amazing talent, and I hope he's with us for a long time to come. I've seen him five times in concert, and want to add to the total. The consummate entertainer.
Two men who, when they pass from the planet, will leave it markedly more with their art and inexorably less by their absence - James Taylor and Stevie Wonder. These two were there for the 60s and all they were, and are still relevant. We won't see their type again.
I saw James in concert a couple of years ago. There was a break and he spent the whole time signing autographs and allowing people to get selfies with him. He even delayed the start of the second half until everyone standing there got their chance with him. Some might have been annoyed but I thought it was awesome of him. Very classy guy with huge talent.
Yes he did the same in MELB Australia back in early 2017. For a shy and quite mentally unwell younger man (as he reminds us here) he has done a great job of working out how to relate to his audience and has moved from being a gtr-picking songwriter to being an all round entertainer while taking nothing away from his awesome musical gifts. He's just a little like Glen Campbell in that respect, though Glen was a down to earth country boy in many ways and seemed well grounded by his faith and his upbringing.
My wife & I saw James at the Royal Albert Hall in October, 2014. Apart from it being a great gig, we too were impressed that when the rest of the band went off for a break, James stayed on stage signing autographs & posing for pictures with people. A lovely, thoughtful & humble man
“1972” ? it may have been 71’ I remember congregating at the Tisbury Artist’s Coop for a concert with all three of the Taylor brothers doing songs like Steamroller and Country Road. As teenagers we were relegated to a dirt pile just outside the wide open back garage like door. Great view. As locals even back then, we knew this was nothing to take for granted. Such an enjoyable evening. I cannot hear James sing without remembering that night 40 plus years ago. His music is timeless.
I'll cry every time you slip in one more dime wow, what a line. I had not heard this song again since the 70s. That was a long time to wait to hear the background of it. But a song means what it means to you at the time regardless of what it meant to the writer when it was written.
Yeah - great line. Jukebox was the first tune on MudSlide Slim 1972, Company the first tune on Flag 1979. Both great albums Flag has a really unusual but very nice arrangement of the Beatles' Day Tripper - without the great Lennon riff, James wrote his own. Seriously top talent.
@@ianbartle456 Interesting. Flag is the only James Taylor album I don't have. I have all the others, including Flying Machine, but I just never bought Flag. I've never heard it. I don't know why. Maybe the cover art put me off. I dunno... *Scratches head*

Interesting. No idea that was behind that particular song. Such a complex man. Misunderstood at times I think. So hard to think of him as sad and alone. Never heard Company Man. Once he got his break he just seemed to take off. I think if you look hard enough you will still find that young man searching for recognition and fame. Sure he never envisioned where his life would take him and the adoration that would follow him all these years.
He is not only a terrific song writer and singer but an intelligent man with a good sense of humour.
Besides being a simply incredible singer/songwriter/musician, James Taylor is an unassuming, modest and truly nice man. I have never heard anyone characterize him in any other way.
This 50+ black woman has always been a fan. MsCGary thank you for sharing. I’ve never been to North Carolina but JT’s songs transport me there
And me in Brazil.
He has such a sweet humanity....a humility and a level of self awareness that lends him real credibility.

It's true. I guess a performer has to be in the public eye, not necessarily for good reasons. JT is awesome and has been a part of us for 40+ years.
You are 100% correct. I agree totally!! He has been a sheer delight to listen to for over 40 years.
