Hi. This is very old video. Can you please give advice were to start looking for minerals with kids , without go inside dangerous mines. If you know someone not so far from Montreal. Thanks.
When we were there I was too chicken to drive my car down the hill, so we parked at the top. We never stopped to look at the rocks themselves. Next trip in I will check out the rocks. That chair thing you were looking at was used by a rock band that was camping out to make a music video. They had two large sets of drums.....Thanks for the video.
+Caver461 I found out because the camp looked abandoned so I went and played the drums. Then the musician showed up. Guess he did not appreciate my drum talents. After begging for his forgiveness he told us what he was up to. The video may be posted by now, though I am not sure what it would be called.
I think that cube you had is a pseudomorph pyrite , I find large sometimes 1 inch ones along with good gold bearing areas of Maine, Vermont and California that I've come across
Nice video as usual. Thanks for sharing. One thing I did catch, I thought Old McDonald had a farm instead of a mine? :) lol sorry I couldn't resist. Keep up the good work.
Hello again Micheal and Jeff , a few weeks back I was near the site of where I located the Florite specimens and I decieded to head up stream a little . I found a spot where the stream drains into a decent sized cavity in the bedrock . The cavity I believe drains into the old limestone quarry aproximately 500 feet to the north , I've seen this cavity dry up in the past and now after watching all of your videos I have an iching to go take a closer look at what I may find . I don't cave explore alone , so if you and or Jeff are ever in the area of Rymal rd and Upper Ottawa rd here in Hamilton , let me know and I would be more than happy to show you its location .
+Caver461 I was meaning to ask you something in my last comment but it slipped my mind . I purchased a few Amethyst crystals a few weeks ago , while I was examining them I noticed what I believe to be a moth type fossil imbedded into one of them .Is this common ?
highenergyog Probably a finger print inclusion or a fracture. they sometimes partially heal and combine pockets of solids, liquids and gasses in a plane that can appear similar to a finger print. you might also be seeing some kind of color zoning or phantom crystal face. You will not see an organic fossil in quartz - it forms in such a way that this would be almost impossible.
This is about 3 hours from me as the crow flies You should get to Cobalt Ont before they open up again There is ALOT going on in Cobalt right now Awesome vid Thanks for sharing Moi je viens du Témis🌬❤️🇨🇦
while I was skiing last year in Quebec I noticed a few spots that I think would yield a few nice specimens , il be heading back that way this summer on my bike trip , there's quite a few highway cuts along the way that I'm going to check out .wish me luck and I will post whatever I find .
+joe squat a cave will display certain geomorphological features - evidence of its creative processes - possibly the interaction between running water and the rock
+Chili Potato Yes - my latest book 'Rockhound: an experience of the North' details the hobby of rock collecting in Ontario. Volume 2 will be coming out in April this year and volume 3 is due for release same month in 2017. You can order Rockhound off my website rockhoundbook.com
Drive the 50 between Hawksbury and Gatineau. They blasted a lot of the hills to get through. You should be able to find some interesting things in the cuts.
It appears the quartz around the crystal has gotten smoky. Did you test for alpha radioactivity or just beta/gamma? Uranium, thorium, and their daughters give off far more alpha than beta/gamma, so it's far easier to detect if your device is capable. It looks like a uraninite crystal to me.
+Mark Rose Jeff did the test, but what you say makes sense, I'll ask him to make sure he did the test as you suggest. To me I could see uranophane fudged onto nearby rock and again the smoky quartz.
Hello! I have found a mineral that is almost identical to the one you smashed open at 3:03 and I am very curious as to what it is! The specimen I have reacts to a metal detector and quickly tarnishes from silver to yellow. I was wondering if you knew what it is? I was thinking arsenopyrite?? Thanks!
hi im a very big fan, just wanted to know if you could identify a type of rock i found near wallingford mine i can send you a picture. i found a big mass of yellow rocks
These videos are just terrific and short enough to keep just about anyone's interest peaking;) I'd still love to see a 'greatest hits' sort of video from the mineral collection come rockhound hibernation season. I agree with Coin and Relic Ontario that based off of looks alone and no radioactivity, the mineral in question is likely goethite. Check out the examples from the Beryl Pit on mindat.org , as they look quite similar. Cheers
+Matt P.C. Mindat is a world of great info and we always precede any trip with a check on mindat. most valuable are the locations. It seems that Jeff had suspected a pseudomorph as well. thanks for your thoughts.
I'm a Local Resident and to let you All Know that the Mine Has Now been Closed up and Barricaded Too All !!! this place is NOT SAFE !!! PS... Thanks for All the Trash that was left behind !!! No Respect !!!
I will come and check soon. I generally ride my mountain bike, and collect the bare minimum. And I don't leave anything behind. :-) Not even a cigarette butt: I don't smoke.

+Bloeski's Wrecking Crew Wow - great info how'd you find that out?

Very cool mine!
+Rob Farrow I especially liked the back entrance.

are you the 1st one that put this place on you tube.in canada not a lot of place like this
hey I did that steep hill in a toyota echo witch had snow. we barely made it back up the hill.
Happy to see someone mining in Quebec. Bonne récolte!
exellent, looks like a great place
Nice video as usual. Thanks for sharing. One thing I did catch, I thought Old McDonald had a farm instead of a mine? :) lol sorry I couldn't resist. Keep up the good work.
Went there with a Toyota echo with around 3 inches of snow. Barely got back up the hill
Hey Mike. A uraninite of that size would give off enough to be detected. i notice a slight brassy tinge. My guess, Goethite pseodo after pyrite!!
+CoinandRelicOntario Thanks - good thought, i'll check it out more closely next time I meet up with Jeff

how do you tell the difference between a groundhog hole and a cave

Hello this video is amazing! I was wondering if you have any resources or advice for rock hunting in Manitoba/southern ontario?

My sister and me are tryign to find spots near montreal wiht interesting mineralisation (crystal) Would you happen to know some spots?
Drive the 50 between Hawksbury and Gatineau. They blasted a lot of the hills to get through. You should be able to find some interesting things in the cuts.
1:21 I went skating here last winter crystal clear ice
hi, I wonder how much depth the traveler could reach to the mine ? how could find mine at least 200-2000 meters depth ?

Caver461 Yeah, it did look like uranophane next to the crystal to me, too.
+Caver461 so how do you not get in troble for trespassing? here in the states I could get fined for doing that
Either ask for permission, or its not a place where there is a problem to visit.
Caver461 so I am gussing you guys ask permission? and there not many caves/mines around here [ I live near deitroy Michigan

I would love to see someone scuba dive in that clear water 😯
hi im a very big fan, just wanted to know if you could identify a type of rock i found near wallingford mine i can send you a picture. i found a big mass of yellow rocks
Could be a cool place to dive.
+LuKe g I'm sure it is
I am going there next weeks with friends, and i wanted to know if it is safe to swim there. Thank you :*
It seems to be free of hazards, but likely quite cold.
Caver461
Alrighty thank you! Do you know any similar places arround mtl?
And where could i find some interesting rocks in this mine?
Its close now, they put some big metal plate in front of the entrance , its all welded togetter and same thing at the top, its sad
Psuedomorph of some kind? Very interesting

hi oiwould like to talk to you about a place not far from there were there is way more mineral formationsm
"uranite" is limonite after pyrite

Merci de l'info... et en plus si on possède un permis de prospecteur, ils n'ont rien à opposer.
I'm so jealous. My life goal is to live in Canada. All that fresh air and clear water..just heaven on earth
You should come visit. It's not heaven on earth, but the quality of life is pretty good, living here is pretty cheap also.
i got a video of this place in winter check it out
